Fucking barbecues...

The weather is gorgeous where we are, it’s been beautiful all week, perfect for line drying washing... except it’s not. Every last bastard on our road has decided to have a barbecue, pretty much Midday straight through to the evening there’s a bbq going somewhere. It’s driving me mad having to tumble dry our washing in this weather! I thought we were in luck earlier and put out my sheets... I’ve just had to go out to retrieve them as there’s at least two bbqs on the go now and my sheets now honk

Does anyone else think bbqs are antisocial or is it just me?

Be thankful you don’t live at my house. We have 6 BBQs, and a whole dedicated BBQ zone in the garden.

Lynda07 · 10/05/2020 06:14

FenceFuckery, I wish I lived next door to you, you could hand me a plate over the fence or wall. I love barbecues and miss them but wouldn't do one just for me.

FenceFuckery · 10/05/2020 06:27

Hah @Lynda07 our neighbors do get lucky at times. They share their fishing bounty with us so it’s a win all around!

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 10/05/2020 07:17

YANBU, charcoal barbeques really stink - the lighter fuel and billowing smoke smells awful.

I also agree with "If you can smell it, you’re breathing it. Charcoal burnt on bbqs produces particulate matter that can trigger asthma attacks"
At a time when people are suffering from illnesses causing breathing problems it is anti-social.

I can't stand burgers and chargrilled food (even in restaurants) and don't get why so many people enjoy eating food with carcinogenic bits on it.

Still, each to their own. I wouldn't complain to a neighbour about it though but, thankfully, the only family around here who had them moved last year and there have been none so far this year.

What I do hate is when I have been invited to a BBQ by friends and acquaintances and I decline. Obviously I try to be polite but, if pressed, I will say I don't really like chargrilled food and normally get lambasted for not liking it. According to them there is something wrong with me for not liking cheap crappy sausages and burgers, BBQ chicken wings and thighs their glorious outdoor cooked food.

Your BBQ looks delicious @Koppa2Toppa - I'd love to know what you've got there!

MaryShelley1818 · 10/05/2020 08:06

Absolutely love BBQs! We have a cheap charcoal one from Lidl and it's fab, 2 days running now we've enjoyed burgers, sausages, chicken and kofta sticks with various accompaniments. DS age 2 thinks it's brilliant that we can cook dinner outside while he plays in his sand pit and splashes in the pool!

redwoodmazza · 10/05/2020 08:13

We had a BBQ yesterday. Had no tomatoes so experimented with BBQ broccoli - in a garlic marinade. It was yummy!

Sipperskipper · 10/05/2020 08:15

I really think people who hate BBQs so much must be doing it wrong!

I’ve never had a BBQ (in my garden anyway) that includes cheap burnt sausages and burgers.

Yesterday’s BBQ- homemade burgers, barbecue flatbreads with garlic butter, corn on the cob and lots of lovely salads & roasted peppers.

I’d have a BBQ every day of the year if I could!

Ineedaduvetday · 10/05/2020 08:18

YANBU. Had to close the doors and windows last night due to the stink.

pictish · 10/05/2020 08:27

Oh dear. That must have been awful for you.

makingmammaries · 10/05/2020 08:48

YANBU. The smoke sets my asthma off. Why is someone’s desire to use Stone Age outdoor cooking methods, when presumably they have a normal kitchen, more important than clean air?

Silvercatowner · 10/05/2020 08:51

YANBU. Can't bear the smell. The neighbours have a hot tub AND a BBQ. The mixure of chlorine and scorched meat smells gross.

weepingwillow22 · 10/05/2020 08:56

I like bbq's but I also think people should be able to hang their washing out without it getting smelly. The real issue is the planning laws in the uk which mean that gardens are unnessessarily small. A lot of the older terraced houses have pretty decent long gardens so it should be possible to have a bbq well away from the neighbours washing. New build gardens generally seem to be weirly shaped and overlooked by multiple neighbours.

TellySavalashairbrush · 10/05/2020 08:58

Yanbu. I bloody hate them too. Sadly some people also use them to cook breakfast on too Hmm so to those who say put your washing out early, that’s not always an option. I’ve had barbecues, bonfires, loud bass type music all day, in our small, tightly packed line of terraced houses. People can be very inconsiderate.

Zeusthemoose · 10/05/2020 08:58

You must be a complete fool tumble drying in this weather then moaning about it as if you have no choice!

understandme · 10/05/2020 09:07

@Sipperskipper exactly! I love squid on the BBQ, have you done that? Delicious!

Sipperskipper · 10/05/2020 09:13

@understandme no but that sounds amazing!

understandme · 10/05/2020 09:17

@Sipperskipper clean it, score it diagonally, marinade in soy sauce, lime juice, chillis .... delicious! We do the tentacles also. The lime juice makes it so tender.

Macncheeseballs · 10/05/2020 09:20

Not a fan of bbqs unless I'm camping

Isawamagpie · 10/05/2020 09:44

Yabu.
My clothes have been out and they never smell.
Extra YABU due to the fact everyone stuck at home and making the best of it.
Clothes don't have to be dried outside.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/05/2020 09:48

We had one yesterday and it was delicious - no cheap burgers or bangers here thanks Grin I do feel slightly uncomfortable about the smoke though even though it’s short-lived. What’s a good gas barbecue - are they as nice taste-wise?

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 10/05/2020 09:51

They are nice taste wise. We got gas. What you can do for extra flavour, though it is not needed, is to get little metal box thing which you can fill with special wood chips. Soooo goooood.

Chillipeanuts · 10/05/2020 09:53

Hate bbqs too.

LakieLady · 10/05/2020 10:15

I think the kind of charcoal used makes a big difference. We still have a couple of sacks of what we call "artisan charcoal" Wink, produced by DSS from bits of felled wood from the sustainably managed wood he used to manage.

It hardly smokes at all, burns easily, and has quite a sweet smell.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/05/2020 12:36

I put my washing out yesterday morning. As did all my neighbours in our block of four terraced houses. By early afternoon we had all taken our dry washing indoors. By six pm 3 households of the four were barbecuing. The elderly lady on her own never barbecues but pre lockdown she sometimes joined us for a burger....

All of my windows were open throughout but there was no smoky smell in the house.

One of my neighbours have BBQs most days in the summer. They have much more interesting tasty smells coming from theirs than from mine....
