Fucking barbecues...

The weather is gorgeous where we are, it’s been beautiful all week, perfect for line drying washing... except it’s not. Every last bastard on our road has decided to have a barbecue, pretty much Midday straight through to the evening there’s a bbq going somewhere. It’s driving me mad having to tumble dry our washing in this weather! I thought we were in luck earlier and put out my sheets... I’ve just had to go out to retrieve them as there’s at least two bbqs on the go now and my sheets now honk

Does anyone else think bbqs are antisocial or is it just me?

We are outside in the garden all the time, gardening, playing, eating ice lollies , sun bathing . The neighbours have a trampoline, their choice, not something I would put in but it doesn’t bother me, ditto children playing, bike riding. However I do not allow noisy shrieking or play that involves balls damaging other peoples gardens/ plants. Kids can be kids without bothering others and I hope I’m teaching my child consideration for others. This afternoon she was banging her child spade onto the patio stones, I stopped her and told her not to do it as it is too loud and annoying. If children are taught at a young age to think about how they impact others everyone would be happier. Live and let live, my neighbours can do as they choose but do I think more highly of the considerate, quiet, neighbourly ones than the ones who break my plants with their footballs, shriek at their kids and never bring in their bins..I certainly do! You can have fun without impacting on others..

It's 24 degrees. It's Bank Holiday weekend. We're in lockdown.

I think you'd be a happier person if you tried to manage your expectations about what behaviour to expect from people.

Maybe consider moving to a part of the country where you can afford a detached house with land. We don't smell other people's barbecues and they can't smell ours.

Also see above for no neighbour noise, music, kids, balls over the fence etc. HTH

Fluffybutter · 09/05/2020 19:57

Ha! Get bent .. you are unreasonable for expecting people not to have bbq’s on a sunny Saturday because of your washing .
We had a lovely bbq today and so did many of our neighbours

Fluffybutter · 09/05/2020 19:59

@pussycatinboots or maybe you’d think some people enjoy cooking outside on a lovely bank holiday weekend .. ffs

Pegase · 09/05/2020 20:04

I'm confused by this. We had a BBQ today and had our own washing out at same time. Washing doesn't smell at all. We have a gas BBQ not charcoal so does that make a difference? We always have both at once?!

@pussycatinboots I own two ovens, a microwave, BBQ and garden!

I use them as the seasons dictate, currently it's BBQ and garden time! Love it.

Put your washing up nice and early in the morning it'll be dry by mid day.
We had a gorgeous bbq today as did some of our neighbours. We don't do it everyday but we had a much needed relaxed lovely day in the sun with some lovely burgers Grin

Bridecilla · 09/05/2020 21:27

Mornings are for drying washing. Afternoons are for yummy bbq!!

Ibizafun · 09/05/2020 21:38

Of course you know your being unreasonable but I’m a moody bitch too at the moment, doesn’t take much to set me off...

megladon2020 · 09/05/2020 21:42

I love a BBQ but try to be considerate of neighbours so we bought an outdoor grill which gives the same effect but without the smoke and it's fab. Been using it several times a week since lockdown- when the sun came out! Don't feel guilty anymore.

maggienolia · 09/05/2020 23:11

Only antisocial activity taking place here is the Peter Stringfellow of the hedgehog world shagging his latest conquest on the forsythia.

Midsommar · 10/05/2020 00:19

I don't think you're being hugely unreasonable OP - I live in terraced housing so if someone lights up a bbq that's our whole street, garden and house stunk up! However whenever I've hung washing out when someone has had a bbq going my washing never seems to smell. I think you have to be basically bbq-ing if your own garden for it to cling to any washing.

Midsommar · 10/05/2020 00:21

@maggienolia thanks for the chuckle! Every garden needs a Peter Stringfellow hedgehog 😂

Muddlingalongalone · 10/05/2020 00:27

YABU
I did my washing this morning, dried it and then bbq'd & it was awesome.

TheyCallMeTheWildRose · 10/05/2020 00:30

How anyone can be lighting BBQs/bonfires/fire pits during lockdown when people are shielding or potentially suffering from Covid, is beyond me... so yes, I would say that BBQs are anti social.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 10/05/2020 00:35

If you get your washing out early or even put it out the night before it should be dry by lunchtime anyway..... when the BBQs start up. I would expect BBQs on a sunny weekend for sure, maybe less so on a week day.

TinRoofRusty · 10/05/2020 00:37

Easily. You strike a match or use one of those candle lighter things and fire it up.

Bobleywobley · 10/05/2020 00:44

Normally = bbqs are not antisocial.
During pandemic of respiratory virus = yes, antisocial.

GADDay · 10/05/2020 00:47

If ever there was a time for tolerance. Do you think that would be now.

I live in a sunny clime.... bbqs and line drying are not mutually exclusive. You can cook outside and have fresh smelling, lime dried linen. I know because we do it all the time.

The only time our clothes honk is when we are camping and crank up the fire after cooking whilst we drink red wine and appreciate the stars.

Let it go. Tumble dry for a few weeks. Be happy.

Thesunrising · 10/05/2020 00:54

If you can smell it, you’re breathing it. Charcoal burnt on bbqs produces particulate matter that can trigger asthma attacks and is linked to cancer, stroke, COPD, heat attack, dementia - so burning stuff (especially in the middle of a public health crisis where people are struggling to breathe) seems unreasonable & unnecessary.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 10/05/2020 00:58

@maggienolia thanks for the chuckle! Every garden needs a Peter Stringfellow hedgehog 😂

I pictured it wearing a tiny green thong!

Pixxie7 · 10/05/2020 01:16

With the current restrictions there is not much for anyone to do, so I wouldn’t begrudge anyone having a bit of fun.

Mummyshark2019 · 10/05/2020 01:39

You can dry your clothes inside. You can't have a BBQ inside. People can't go out. They are making the last of their homes. You are being unreasonable.
