So young grandparents here. How do we choose who we see in this social bubble.

family 1 - OH, me and DS home from uni. = 3
family 2 DS, wife, 3 children = 5
family 3 DS, wife, 2 children plus MIL = 5

Total 13.

We are three over the limit. Am I supposed to choose between family 2 = 8 Or family 3 = 8

It really is a dilemma for me is it for others. I want to see both families so aibu?

RichardMarxisinnocent There are many people I want to see - boyfriend, friends and their families, some of my family. But as someone living alone and feeling really lonely, the only thing I actually NEED is face to face contact with one person I love, semi regularly.

I agree with the gist of your post but I'm worried rules like this will overlook important things and miss people out. For example, what if you had shared care of DC, so you already counted as two households in a bubble with their dad?

I fear that the people who would most benefit from some limited social contact will be left out because either they or the people they want to see already have a "bubble" with someone else for important reasons.

Itwasntme1 · 05/05/2020 11:42

As step one it would be lovely if people living alone could visit one household.

It would be simple to understand, and would make the world of difference to people living alone and struggling with isolation.

All those saying "but how do I choose between my children/grandchildren?", "I want to see these people but my DP will want to see these other people", "this will cause arguments in my family"...we're in a global emergency! Surely no one was under the impression that the way out of this was going to be easy? If this or any similar policy is brought in, the aim will not be to keep everyone happy but to try to prevent a second wave of infections resulting in more deaths and increased pressure on already struggling public services while simultaneously trying to prevent further damage to the country's economy. If this bubble of 10 thing actually happens (hopefully not as it would be an unqualified disaster based on this thread) then my family would also be facing a dilemma, some very difficult conversations would need to be had, and none of the possible outcomes would be ideal but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.

TolpuddleFarter · 05/05/2020 18:19

I'm hoping they don't implement this.

My DM works full time in a supermarket, and my DF visits the off licence everyday. They would be a huge risk to us, so if they bring this in I would have to have the awkward conversation where I tell them to keep away...

Mascotte · 05/05/2020 18:23

Again, @Tolpuddle, there's no obligation to do this but perhaps think of lonely, desperate people who are isolated with no company and potentially mental health problems.

This might work of people could have a bit of compassion and sense. I saw someone through work who has ended up back in psychiatric hospital because all his supports and family had been taken away overnight. This idea would help people like him massively.

I hope they don't introduce this rule. I am relieved at the moment that I have an excuse not to see my in-laws.

Well, I hope they do because my friends and I have our bubble planned & I can’t wait to see them.

smilingontheinside · 05/05/2020 21:34

I'm quite happy not to see any of my family including the stxh would just like the freedom to go out other than for a walk

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 05/05/2020 22:06

Foolslemontree
It means you and your children can visit one set of grandparents on one day and the other set on another day. Only dilemma us which set to choose first Smile

HavartitoMeetYou · 06/05/2020 10:54

It’s pretty gross to want people who are completely alone and isolated to be denied all human contact just so you don’t have to have an awkward conversation with an in-law.

StirCrazy2020 · 06/05/2020 10:57

I'd struggle to find 10. My partner and two children. X husband maybe, my parents, sister and brother... That's about it!

thecatsthecats · 06/05/2020 13:45

@JonSnowIsALoser

I must admit it would piss me off considerably to have no excuse not to visit my local in laws whilst being legally banned from visiting my own parents far away!
