To be ashamed to be British

yesterdayschild · 28/04/2020 15:29

Every day more and more British deaths. When compared to other countries some of them third world, we have an appalling death rate from Covid 19.
Why oh why did the government allow 3000 Spanish to enter just to watch a football match when Spain would not allow them to watch in their own country.
Why was the Stereophonics concert allowed when other countries had locked down.
Why are thousands of people still entering the U.K. with no checks.
Why are our NHS staff still begging for PPE

I am feeling very very low about all of this and wish I lived in some other country.

Whilst I get the jist, have some family in Spain where lockdown is much tighter, at least you don’t live in the US.

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2020 15:33

Three words.

Captain Tom Moore.

2outof3Mightbebad · 28/04/2020 15:34

You're asking the wrong people.

Captain Tom Moore.

Yes he is marvelous but other countries have wonderful people too.

I'm not ashamed to be British. I didn't vote for the current shower of shite leading us though.

I might feel differently if I had.

The USA has a population of 350 million compared to the UK 68 million and the USA are reporting ALL deaths not just hospitals.

Completely agree with you, OP.Star

noavailablename · 28/04/2020 15:36

It isn't generally the British people. It is the government. Sadly, I think any other party's government would be just as bad.

chunkyrun · 28/04/2020 15:36

It was colonialism that did it for me. This is a drop in the ocean

MarieQueenofScots · 28/04/2020 15:38

Yes he is marvelous but other countries have wonderful people too

That’s a bit of a bizarre thought process. If other countries have wonderful people, surely they have less than wonderful people too?

cacaca · 28/04/2020 15:39

People did not force ticket holders for stereophonics or Lewis Capaldi to attend - many who had tickets made the decision not to go.

ducksback · 28/04/2020 15:41

I do not understand your mind set OP but crack on if it makes you feel better.

This is true but it the government had made it clear how dangerous this was going to be then perhaps they would not have gone. They wanted herd immunity then changed their mind.

The other countries that have high death rates like Belgium, are just beginning to ease their lockdowns, to the level of ours. if you want to have armed police and military on the street, stopping and asking you why you are going out, and have to provide papers, then go to France, Spain and Italy. If you want to be fined €200 for not shopping at the nearest supermarket to you, whether it is crap or not, move to Belgium, and see above for armed police and military.

We don't know that we have an appalling death rate, as we don't know the level of infections overall. Every single person in the UK would have to be tested for that.

I think you'll find the medical staff in other countries are begging for PPE as well - it's a world wide pandemic, with world wide needs for PPE, not just the UK.

I am not ashamed to be British and never have been. Places with large international hubs like London, Brussels and NY have been hard hit. Try looking at population density as well, we are a densly populated island; it's no wonder we have a lot of deaths.

Pissflapflip · 28/04/2020 15:43

Yes YABU

MellowBird85 · 28/04/2020 15:45

What @thegcatsmother said. Do you really think it’s only the NHS that’s crying out for PPE? And yes to population density. You’re being a bit dramatic tbh...

HoldMyLobster · 28/04/2020 15:46

Looking in from the outside in early to mid March it was very strange to see the UK carrying on as normal, while we were closing schools, banning large gatherings, stopping travel etc.

I think people in the UK were put in a very difficult position where they were told to carry on as normal albeit washing their hands more.

Given the population density, the fact that it's a global hub etc it really needed an earlier lockdown than elsewhere, not a later one.

But that isn't a reason to be ashamed to be British. The government did a shit job and should be shouldering the blame.

Justanotherlurker · 28/04/2020 15:46

It was colonialism that did it for me. This is a drop in the ocean

That has to be one of the funniest self loathing posts I've read in months!

Some people never fail to keep proving Orwell right.

OneandTwenty · 28/04/2020 15:47

Blaming the "government" because people childishly decide to make their own rules and translate everything they are not physically prevented from doing by "I am allowed" is part of the problem.

People are adults and should show a bit of common sense. They chose not to. Read the threads on here about posters laughing about the "lockdown", how it doesn't apply to them.

I am not sure stupidity is a British thing however.

Amazing how everyone would have done so much better if they were in Govt. Everyy country is different . Afterwards in the final analysis of course there will be lessons to learn for the next time, as there will be in Italy ans Spain who did many of the things you wish our govt had done. For those who harp on and on about not voting for this Govt, for your information many people did. I just thank my lucky stars Jeremy is not running the show. Whatever the truths we are where we are and should do our bloody best. Many chose to go to concerts and Cheltenham and Crufts. Many dont respect the lockdown. Most are just looking for scapegoats. It is ridiculous to be ashamed to be british. My friends in Italy have experienced the same problems right along the line

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/04/2020 15:49

To be ashamed to be British

Full of click bait goodness. Mmmmmmmmm.

FliesandPies · 28/04/2020 15:49

I'm not the least ashamed to be British - so many people in the country working hard, selflessly, generously, positively to get us through.

I am very ashamed of our dreadful incompetent government and our disgrace of a Prime Minister but as I didn't vote for them that's not on me.

nightswimmers · 28/04/2020 15:50

I have often felt ashamed to be British, and can't wait for my host country to (hopefully) give us nationality so we don't have to use our only current passport option.

However, this is not one of those times.

The outpouring of support and giving and community that I have witnessed, from afar, towards my family and friends is outstanding.

The ones you should be angry with are the government, not Joe Bloggs and his family.
