To be jealous of my neighbours' Tesco deliveries?

nothingcomestonothing · 24/04/2020 15:23

Alright a bit of me knows I am, but still. They've had 3 in the last 7 days, that I've seen. They are definitely not vulnerable/shielding, the dad is still going to work every day and the mum works in a nursery which is currently closed and is at home with the 3 school aged DC.

I'm NHS, still going to work, and a single parent, I can't shop at NHS-only times because they clash with my work hours, and when I do shop I have to take the DC with me.

Prior to all this I have been a weekly Tesco delivery customer for about 5 years, one of my DC is sensory seeking and a nightmare in shops at the best of times, plus it's just easier all round.

I check every single day for a Tesco delivery slot, I cant get one they're booked up for weeks. I've managed to get a couple of click and collects, and tide us over with dashes to the Spar in the evenings with the DC in tow (and DS desperately trying to remember not to lick/sniff/ touch stuff, its v stressful).

How, how are they doing it? HOW!!? I am so, so jealous and a tiny bit judging when they have 2 adults in the house, and one of them goes out every day, why do they need deliveries and WHY CAN'T I GET ONE Envy Angry

can you ask your neighbour if you can add items to their next grocery shop? That's what I and my neighbour do.

LockedDownNOut · 24/04/2020 18:48

@Kinneddar Has it always been a max 3 weeks in advance? was it reduced after lockdown? I'm hoping she was just showing off, but what a strange thing to be showing off about.

IndecentFeminist · 24/04/2020 18:50

It's always only been approx 3 wks. Slightly longer at Christmas.

IndecentFeminist · 24/04/2020 18:50

And tbh even before lockdown she'd have struggled to get lots of slots, round our way they were booked up.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/04/2020 18:53

Slots don't just become available at midnight. The last 2 deliveries I've had (2 weeks apart) I looked at 8am and there were quite a few choices of slots. I tend to look most days now at that time.

CD41 · 24/04/2020 18:55

That’s odd because I read somewhere that Tesco aren’t letting customers book more than one a week!

I admit I’ve managed to get shopping delivered most weeks by hard work, booking slots in advance (as I do do anyway, I’m a regular customer) and checking constantly. Dc have autism and going to the shops is difficult as it is let alone now.

I guess it’s difficult if you are working but you need to check constantly for slots. They do come up and at the most random times and go very fast. The other day I was checking (not for me buy for shielding mil) and there was slots for the very next day but after 5 minutes they were gone. This was about 1pm in the afternoon.

Kinneddar · 24/04/2020 18:58

@LockedDownNOut. Yes it's always about 3 weeks. Slightly more Xmas & Easter but even then it's only an extra week or so.

CodenameVillanelle · 24/04/2020 18:59

My Tesco account won't let me book more than one delivery - when I booked one and tried to see if there were still slots (for a friend) it said there were none but when she looked, there were loads.

Maybe different areas have different rules?

mushroom3 · 24/04/2020 19:02

It's not difficult to get Iceland slots, they release them around midday daily.

REdReDRE · 24/04/2020 19:12

Shoppingslot.co.uk worked for us to find availability

GlitterNails · 24/04/2020 19:12

I have priority status - but with Tesco it doesn't mean a lot and hasn't been helpful. I've got a slot each week by logging in at midnight and have managed to get one each week that way.

Hannah888 · 24/04/2020 19:13

Thank you Alternativeperspective. I am shattered from spending the early hours looking for a Tesco slot. Read your post, rang he number,-brilliant. They are giving me priority slots so wait 24 hours and should have a fighting chance. Thank you for taking the time and the trouble.

LastTrainEast · 24/04/2020 19:21

Currently new slots come up each night, but tesco will hide slots in the week where you have an order already so you could go a week without seeing any new slots but on the 8th day one day's slots would appear for you at midnight (and go in 10 minutes)

So there is no way now to have 3 deliveries in a week unless 3 people in the house have signed up separately. I suppose that is possible, but I'm surprised Tesco didn't pick up on it

If that is what they are doing that sounds selfish though we don't know the circumstances.

Taja123 · 24/04/2020 19:21

Worth checking through the day as due to reading this thread went on Tesco and got a slot for tomorrow 9am only slot available was shocked

I guess just check any time you get a chance

Easilyanxious · 24/04/2020 19:23

Iceland seem to have slots all of a sudden round here if you have one might be worth checking
And ASDA click and collect over been lucky with looming late at night
Can't get anything for tesco though

PepePig · 24/04/2020 19:24

I can understand being peeved at someone getting so many deliveries so frequently, but you're able to get C&C slots, so what's the issue?

I'm classed as vulnerable but have been incredibly lucky to get C&C slots since lockdown. They're absolutely fantastic and apart from a short drive in my car to ASDA (which gets me out of the house once a week, anyway), I can go and fairly safely collect my shopping. Just bring hand sanitzer with you to use once you're done. It also means I can bring DD who is a toddler with me in the car (so she gets a change of scenery/journey) and do the collection while DP is in work.

I think if you can drive, you really should be aiming for C&C slots rather than deliveries. I personally would rather leave delivery slots for those who can't drive/don't have a car, are vulnerable, struggle with getting around the shops, etc. The fact is, whilst I'm vulnerable, I can lift my own shopping into my own car, and so it would be a bit selfish of me to use delivery slots when I don't need them. Maybe you should consider that before being so annoyed about not getting a delivery slot (although I do totally sympathise that it's infuriating when it seems like someone is taking the piss- you just don't know enough to make that call).

Aridane · 24/04/2020 19:40

Both Tesco and Sainsbury are at least sending regular updates by email. I haven’t heard from Ocado for about five weeks, when they told me I would be in some mythical priority group due to being such a loyal customer. Yeah, right!

I’m the other way round

Sainsbury’s deny I am a customer and nothing from Tesco. However, Ocado have informed me I can have weekly deliveries on Mondays

Aridane · 24/04/2020 19:45

PS:anyone who books more than one slot at a time is selfish. These are the people who are preventing others from being able to shop. Even if those slots are a week apart.

Actually Imthink it’s more to do with online grocery shopping being a minority way of purchasing groceries, hence not be8ng able to cope with people all gong online to grocery shop while they STAY HOME

LastTrainEast · 24/04/2020 20:04

AlternativePerspective "anyone who books more than one slot at a time is selfish. These are the people who are preventing others from being able to shop. Even if those slots are a week apart."

Think it through. Tesco are offering slots 3 weeks away. If I waited until I'd had a delivery before booking the next they would be 3 weeks apart.

As it is I have 3 slots booked 10 days apart and I will continue to do so as I was housebound long before the virus came along.

nothingcomestonothing · 24/04/2020 20:42

Ok well I have stopped having my tantrum moment. Thank you to everyone who suggested alternatives to Tesco, some of which hadn't occurred to me. Although I dont feel right using the local help group, it turns out the Spar are delivering essentials to vulnerable people and are happy to include me in that group, so that's fab.

My post was never meant to be 'look what arseholes my neighbours are', more 'tell me it's ok to be jealous they've got something to make life easier that I want and haven't got'. They've got every right to get deliveries, and I dont know everything about them.

I actually have been quite anxious about getting food, I'm already exposed to risk by going to work and am exposing my DC by sending them to school (which I feel guilty about), and trying to shop with them is tricky and makes me feel crap that I'm exposing them to even more people who could have the virus. It really has been stressing me more than I realised until now.

Watertorture · 24/04/2020 21:06

Simple things have become a lot more complicated OP and we are worrying about stuff that wasn't an issue before.
I must say I'm glad for this thread as it was the first time I've ever looked at Iceland (I thought it was literally only frozen stuff Blush ) and they turn out to have many slots available in the coming week in my area.

Redglitter · 24/04/2020 21:16

I'd recommend getting a Delivery Pass with Asda. I bought one and when I got a slot it allowed me to make it a recurring slot so I now have a weekly slot without having to try and grab one.

I do prefer Tesco but it was so stressful trying to get a slot. I'll stick with Asda until things are back to normal

orlarose · 24/04/2020 21:31

I'd just be curious what they're buying. Tesco have an 80 item limit which for 5 of us I can do 7 days. By having so many I wonder whether they're buying a small amount of items each shop which is pretty selfish.

Incontinencesucks · 24/04/2020 21:36

I suspect it wasn't three deliveries. My uncle had 3 asdas in 10 days, not because he ordered 3 times but delivery 1 they forgot all freezer stuff so next day came back then 6 days later was his usual weekly delivery.

lookingatthings · 24/04/2020 21:50

Haven't read the full thread so apologies if this has been covered but : our local aldi and tesco is doing priority nhs access. Means you can go at any time and not have to queue. Just show your badge. Might be work calling your supermarket and asking if that's something they are doing
