To be jealous of my neighbours' Tesco deliveries?

Alright a bit of me knows I am, but still. They've had 3 in the last 7 days, that I've seen. They are definitely not vulnerable/shielding, the dad is still going to work every day and the mum works in a nursery which is currently closed and is at home with the 3 school aged DC.

I'm NHS, still going to work, and a single parent, I can't shop at NHS-only times because they clash with my work hours, and when I do shop I have to take the DC with me.

Prior to all this I have been a weekly Tesco delivery customer for about 5 years, one of my DC is sensory seeking and a nightmare in shops at the best of times, plus it's just easier all round.

I check every single day for a Tesco delivery slot, I cant get one they're booked up for weeks. I've managed to get a couple of click and collects, and tide us over with dashes to the Spar in the evenings with the DC in tow (and DS desperately trying to remember not to lick/sniff/ touch stuff, its v stressful).

How, how are they doing it? HOW!!? I am so, so jealous and a tiny bit judging when they have 2 adults in the house, and one of them goes out every day, why do they need deliveries and WHY CAN'T I GET ONE Envy Angry

Thanks for suggestions, I will try other shops and after all this is over Tesco can lose a weekly customer if another shop comes up trumps. And I've realised it was 3 deliervies in 9 days not 7 - Wednesday and Thursday last week then again today. I don't go to the shops while out anyway because I have to pick the DC up straight from work, and one is sensory seeking and will touch and lick and smell anything which is a nightmare both in terms of what he might catch and in terms of other shoppers reactions! I'm not kidding, he once picked up a loom band off the ground at a farm and put it in his mouth! Envy (not envy)

Forget what your neighbours are doing, concentrate on yourself and your own family. I say this as a full time carer for an elderly person who despite multiple, multiple disabilities and being entirely dependent 24/7 is not on the vulnerable list. The thing is to beat the system not look at what other people are doing. (Comparison being the thief of joy etc etc.) As others have said Tesco frees up slots at midnight but is also doing so at other times of the day (which wasn't the case two weeks ago). Try other supermarkets too. Try Approved Foods - they are random but better than nothing and they do deliver everything you ask for.

moolady1977 · 24/04/2020 17:06

My parents loyal customers of Tesco for years both shielding and can't for love nor money get a delivery slot with Tesco this is after using home delivery for years due to DF having severe COPD . They have been lucky that two neighbours work in different supermarkets and have been ringing them for shopping lists ,they both say they won't use Tesco again

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 24/04/2020 17:07

Come on, you work in the NHS. You must realise that your superficial knowledge of them doesn't mean they aren't shielding or that the DH isn't isolating within the household when he goes back in.

As for orders, yy for Tesco, you need to sit up till midnight. It's only once per week so it shouldn't affect your work capabilities too much. Otherwise, look for local shops that are delivering. We've been able to get deliveries from the local butcher; fruit market and catering wholesalers who have adapted to deliver to the public. Good luck!

stickerqueen · 24/04/2020 17:08

I've been struggling to get a delivery slot until today when I got an email from iceland with a priority slot. Ordered enough to fill our freezer if it all arrives on monday

BuddleiaTime · 24/04/2020 17:08

They must have several accounts as you can't book more than one delivery at a time

Yes you can. We do.

They release slots at odd times and I look a few times a day. If I see one I grab it.

CastleCrasher · 24/04/2020 17:12

You can have multiple slots, but only one in a seven day period, it even days so on their website. So if they've had several in a week then they must have several accounts

I think it's random times too. I'm ordering for my parents and I can sometimes get a next day Morrisons slot once every couple of weeks. I managed to get one this morning at about 9.30 for tomorrow. I've just been on Tesco's for myself and got one for tomorrow, which I was surprised about because I haven't been able to get one anywhere for myself for 3 weeks.

It's very hit and miss and hard to do if you're working shifts though

Lovemusic33 · 24/04/2020 17:17

Maybe they are buying food for relatives that are shielding? Some elderly people struggle with online shopping so others do it for them.

We have a delivery every ten days or so, I’m not on the shielding list but have 2 children with additional needs so can’t leave them to go shopping, I have to stay up until midnight to get a slot and still don’t always get one, my dd gets a small food parcel once a week which has been a god send in between deliveries.

MiserableMillie · 24/04/2020 17:20

Hi OP

I have managed to get regular deliveries from Ocado - every 10 days or so - after much correspondence with them. I am severely disabled so can’t do my own grocery shop at the best of times but not on the vulnerable list. I had weekly deliveries booked in advance for 3 weeks, then nothing

For a while it was worrying not knowing where I would get food from after my last pre-booked delivery so I snapped up a Tesco slot which appeared - the only one - 4 days after my Ocado one. I was on the Tesco site trying to work out if they could help me and it was there smiling at me so I took it, and my neighbours must have wondered WTF was going on.

Now I have the regular slots booked in I add a friend’s order to mine. She is in a similar position to you - working and doesn’t have time or energy to do the searching for availability. She’s very close by so when it arrives I divide up the shop and leave hers by the door, then distance when she collects, it works well.

I’ve also told the residents’ association local to me that I have the slots, in case anyone has a need, for any reason. Do you have any residents’ groups near you who might be able to hook you up with someone like me?

Pissflapflip · 24/04/2020 17:22

It can't be that hard to just ask them to add shopping to their deliveries for you. I'm a single parent with vulnerable children and I've managed to not go to a shop. People will help if you ask nicely. I've also managed to get a big shop delivered from tesco every couple of weeks or so, without checking it constantly or looking at midnight. YABU

Imok · 24/04/2020 17:22

I really think it depends where you live. It took us almost two weeks to be able to get a tesco slot. Got it purely by chance when I logged in to the app whilst dh was trying via the website. Dc mentioned that he'd been unable to get one - like dh and me he is in the vulnerable, stay at home for 12 weeks , get online shopping if at all possible group, so, out of curiosity I looked to see what was available the other night. I could see lots of slots available, messaged him to let him know, but they were not visible to him. So I booked a slot on his behalf, but couldn't get it delivered to him. So, it's coming to me only four days after my delivery. We are going to 'share' each delivery so that anything that doesn't arrive on the first one, hopefully will do on the second. Thankfully, dc lives only a couple of minutes down the road, so we can bag up his stuff and put it out for him to collect.
Don't know why I could see slots that were not showing on his account.

SpillTheTeaa · 24/04/2020 17:22

You don't know their circumstances.
You don't just have to be vulnerable to get a delivery fgs.

SpillTheTeaa · 24/04/2020 17:23

Any maybe try others not just Tesco.

Catsrus · 24/04/2020 17:23

Do you have Milk and More deliveries near you @nothingcomestonothing? I registered with them weeks ago but they weren't taking new customers, they then emailed to say they were taking new customers in my area.

I've been impressed with the range of things they have - they also do Veg boxes which we will begin to make use of once we've used up our current stock. What they don't have are tinned staples, its more fresh food, dairy, dairy alternatives and a weird selection of household stuff and potting compost(!)

As an aside - I got a Morrison's slot by staying in the queue and ignoring the fact that it said there were no available slots! I waited 40 mins to get onto the web site on 1st April and got a slot for 17th. I was already registered with them as an anytime pass holder.

That's not going to work long term for getting fresh veg so I was really pleased to find this veg box option. They are not as cheap as Tesco, but it is delivered before 7am, you can add things to your order up to midday the day before and you can have regular orders. I've got a sliced loaf (for the week) and a nice loaf ("artisan" multigrain) plus orange juice (for DD) and yoghurt arriving with the milk tomorrow for a nice weekend breakfast.

good luck, it's no fun trying to a point where you feel secure about having food coming in.

SpokeTooSoon · 24/04/2020 17:29

Ocado allow me one slot per week (or per 7 day period). Are other supermarkets not limiting in the same way?

WishIWasARunner · 24/04/2020 17:30

I've had tesco delivery saver plan for years, however they emailed and said they are stopping me making any orders to make way for vulnerable people and they will stop taking payments. But they also did this to my mum who is over 70? I need to phone them

user1471523870 · 24/04/2020 17:31

I can only find slots with Ocado in my area.

reasonwith · 24/04/2020 17:31

@Imok - same thing happened to my brother and SIL - we live ten minutes away and our local store is the same, yet they can access slots but we cannot even if we check at the same time. DS has severe asthma and mild cerebal palsy which means we are shielding but my brother is diabetic which could be a factor.

PrivateD00r · 24/04/2020 17:35

OP, why not just ask them?? Just explain your issues and ask what is the best time to get a slot. I know you keep saying you cannot keep checking due to work, but you clearly are not at work all the time if you have all this time to monitor their deliveries!

Guylan · 24/04/2020 17:36

They must have several accounts as you can't book more than one delivery at a time

Sounds like from reading first page of this thread some supermarkets are letting you. I know Ocado aren’t allowing to book anymore than once every two weeks.

wineymummy · 24/04/2020 17:36

Jus ask them if they would add your order to theirs. We have secured a weekly Asda shop (I am heavily pregnant) and I've asked all my immediate neighbours if they want to add anything. Noone has to date but we would be more than happy to do that as we appreciate we are in an incredibly lucky position.

It’s ok to be cross OP. It does feel a bit luck of the draw with Tesco.
I’ve been lucky a couple of times and that might seem unfair to some of my neighbours, I don’t know. But I just don’t know when I might get sick and have to isolate!

You also have my sympathies re sensory seeking child, they sound exactly like my eldest. I had to tell him to stop LICKING the conveyor belt in Waitrose, and he is deffo old enough to know better!
