AIBU to find it strange how much people are drinking at the moment

And more so the almost bragging nature of it on social media? Feel like my Facebook / instagram is full of people showing their wine, beer, expression martinis! I get we are in a strange situation but can’t compute as to how for so many people that’s translated into drinking alcohol every day?? Or maybe it’s just my friends

Expresso martinis (not expression) - a friend posted that she was thrilled a local bar were doing deliveries and she got a whole batch of expresso martini mix

Really, it's remarkable that they aren't drinking more, given that we're going to hell in a hand basket.

WeakAndWeary · 23/04/2020 22:52

They’re doing it because they can. Maybe they like it. Maybe it’s a distraction. Maybe all your friends are old soaks. I would have trouble caring about what other people are doing tbh

Crunchymum · 23/04/2020 22:52

I'll go down with a fine Rioja in my hand Wine

Seriously though, it's not easy and if your "thing" is to drink then this situation isn't going to help.

Fredthedoggie · 23/04/2020 22:52

Amazing isn't it. What with so much else that they could be doing to fill up their evenings (mornings, afternoons).

You would almost think that there was something going on in the world

Fredthedoggie · 23/04/2020 22:53

No driving to then about

Drinking is a rather nice pastime.

justtakeatowel · 23/04/2020 22:53

It's because it's sunny and when I finish work it always feels like a Friday! I'm not drinking every night but it feels like a cold beer would go down well at most moments in the day!

fmpc · 23/04/2020 22:55

GrinGrinGrinI find it strange, that you think it's strangeGrinGrinGrin

GlummyMcGlummerson · 23/04/2020 22:55

Oh bore off OP and have a beer. Nothing worse than the alcohol police. Why are they so prevalent on MN?

Fredthedoggie · 23/04/2020 22:55

Of course on MN if you drink more than a thimbleful to be polite at a wedding twice year you are a raving alcoholic who shouldn't be allowed near children.

Littlepond · 23/04/2020 22:56

You can’t think of a single reason why people might be drinking more? Not one?
Or why people are sharing pictures of their drinking on social media?

It might not be your thing but I feel it is disingenuous to say you find it strange and can’t understand why others would. C’mon OP.

Rebootingagain · 23/04/2020 22:57

Drinking is fun, relaxing and a lot of people can’t do it regularly due to having work in the morning or having to run kids to clubs etc.

A lot of those people at the moment can drink all day everyday if they want as long as it isn’t harming anyone else.

cacaca · 23/04/2020 22:58

Have a drink, lighten up and stop being so miserable.

geekone · 23/04/2020 22:58

This week I made it from Saturday (my last drink) until today! I was very pleased with myself for my self control. Everything is shitty a little gnt or wine or martini 🍸 is a little slice of happiness

Pinkflipflop85 · 23/04/2020 22:58

Yabu for calling it expresso Hmm

Fredthedoggie · 23/04/2020 22:59

The online supermarkets are no longer delivering bottled water. That will be the reason.

anothermansmother · 23/04/2020 22:59

I thought the same thing OP. I was surprised by how much alcohol people were putting into their trolley when shopping. However the most shocking moment was during a meeting online obviously and one staff member was drinking gin and poured herself another during the meeting. What concerns me more is that lots of people are going to struggle when we go back to normality.

Dazedandconfusedpart2 · 23/04/2020 22:59

Hate to be pedantic but please don't say you pronounce it expresso!? Gives me chills.
But aside from that, people are feeling pretty bleak and hopeless so it's no wonder they're turning to other ways to fill their time or trying to make the vast days marginally more enjoyable. I've also been drinking a bit more than I normally would!
That said, I do agree with the dislike of incessant social media posts. Can't stand it!

WorraLiberty · 23/04/2020 23:00

Do you also find comfort eating strange OP?

ChasingRainbows19 · 23/04/2020 23:00

I'm still working full time ( NHS) so I'm still drinking my normal which is once or twice a week. I can completely understand why people are drinking if they are off fully through lockdown. Global pandemic worry and not much to do.....

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/04/2020 23:00

Have to admit, we’re day drinking most (all) of the time!

Doggybiccys · 23/04/2020 23:02

@mumof2exhausted - YANBU. I’ve got a drink problem and have posted on other threads how drinking too much is being normalised / promoted during lockdown. Our radio station is calling it “wine time” at 4pm every day. And cocktails in the morning.

I appreciate most people don’t have a problem with alcohol but at the same time - people don’t set out to become alcoholics,it creeps up on many. people just need to be aware if their drinking is steadily increasing

user2323232323 · 23/04/2020 23:02

Well if you have nothing to get up for in the morning, then why the hell not.

Baskin · 23/04/2020 23:02

Because there is nothing to do! I’m still working but other than that there is nothing, nothing to look forward to so why not just drink

Phifedean123 · 23/04/2020 23:03

I'm up from 6am with the two year old every day and am providing care for my dad. After my own housework I'm done about 8ish. I'll have a few glasses of wine in the evening to relax whilst I'm still cleaning. I have so many plates full right now a couple of glasses of wine is helping with my anxiety.
Still up at 6am the next day to do it all over again so not harming anyone 🤷‍♀️
