AIBU to find it strange how much people are drinking at the moment

And more so the almost bragging nature of it on social media? Feel like my Facebook / instagram is full of people showing their wine, beer, expression martinis! I get we are in a strange situation but can’t compute as to how for so many people that’s translated into drinking alcohol every day?? Or maybe it’s just my friends

OP posts:
Arseit · 23/04/2020 23:44

YABU to find it strange yes.
It’s a unique, unsettling, odd, and for many, horrible situation. No bloody wonder they crack open a bottle of wine / beer / vodka.

TigerBilly · 23/04/2020 23:45

@Highonpotandused I love how this is your username and you find it ‘so fucking boring and pathetic that some people need alcohol to have a life’ 🤣

BilboBercow · 23/04/2020 23:45

Nope it's not strange. The "bragging" as you put it is just people making light of the horrendous situation we're in

Mummyshark2019 · 23/04/2020 23:45

People are struggling. Alcohol is a coping mechanism. It's not right, but it is reality. How people come out of this lockdown is going to be very different to how they came in.

MissConductUS · 23/04/2020 23:47

Corona is the name of a Mexican style beer that's sold in the US. Very few people are buying it at the moment. Smile

RaininSummer · 23/04/2020 23:47

I thought I might drink a bit more than normal but I just don't fancy it. Considered a gin this evening when doing the online quiz but had a coffee instead. Am letting the side down with my paltry 4 drinks in as many weeks.

Fredthedoggie · 23/04/2020 23:50

On the positive side the drug supply chain is being restored very rapidly and so hopefully by next week we will all have access to our usual supplies and can cut down on the alcohol.

Tr1skel1on · 23/04/2020 23:53

Ummm, we are in the middle of a global pandemic. Most people have had their lives turned upside down, separated from family and friends they love and are worried about, are attempting to home school while either working from home, or dealing with losing their jobs etc etc

And you find it strange they might have an extra drink?!

Hey ho

Frozenfan2019 · 23/04/2020 23:59

It's the wrong question.

Is it weird or surprising? No

Is it a potential problem for people? Yes.

Alcohol increases anxiety and depression, not what most of us need ridht now. When we are constantly faced with posts of people drinking and memes about how homeschooling has driven people to drink it is hard not to subconsciously want to be part of it all.

Northernsoullover · 24/04/2020 00:03

I agree with you OP but what can you do? I gave up a year ago for health reasons and its really funny (peculiar) to see all the excuses on here about how there is nothing else to do etc. Its all bullshit of course and I am much happier without the crap in my life. However if this pandemic had happened two years ago I'd have been coming out with the same bullshit excuses.
The best thing to do is ignore it.

livefornaps · 24/04/2020 00:05

Some people think alcohol is a valid substitute for a personality

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 24/04/2020 00:07

I think it's the sunshine. Anyone else remember the last april we never had snow Wink

MadameMeursault · 24/04/2020 00:08

@Northernsoullover why are you saying we need excuses? Some people like a drink, some people don’t. So what. Why is it anyone else’s concern? I can’t be doing with people who judge others for drinking. Mind your own.

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 00:14

I rarely drank before this.

I’m certainly drinking more and if you don’t get it, I doubt any explanation will make a difference to you.

Twixandtwirl · 24/04/2020 00:25

I don't even drink and think it's none of your business. I am eating more at the moment as I'm bored out of my mind. If I did drink I'd probably be doing that too.

PenguinsOnParade · 24/04/2020 00:35

I'm actually drinking less but probably posting about it more.

I'm not able to sit in a pub and just keep ordering more rounds like I would have done before, so I buy in whatever I want to drink for that night and stick to that, and I can't buy extra if I do finish it and want more since it's usually past 10pm by that point and you can't buy anything here then. I'm usually in bed now well before I'd even have been leaving the pub.

missionalmostimpossible · 24/04/2020 00:41

I never used to drink at home, only really drank a bit of alcohol when out socialising with friends, and my DH is teetotal. Since I started working from home 5 weeks ago, I've drink almost 3 bottles of wine (I will finish off the last glass in the already open bottle tomorrow evening).

My DH now thinks I'm a raging alcoholic, when actually this lockdown has meant I've only just discovered that a glass of wine with supper a couple of times a week is actually quite nice! Why did nobody tell me this before???

Northernsoullover · 24/04/2020 00:49

@MadameMeursault I did actually say that to the OP. Ignore it. You sound a bit defensive did I touch a nerve?
Anyway, excuses: they are I'm afraid. Alcohol doesn't relax you. Its an attractively packaged poison that causes more harm than any other drug. But your drinking really doesn't bother me. Nor does anyone elses. I said as much in the post

Leflic · 24/04/2020 00:57

Totally get what you are saying. However a soda and lime, in the hot sun of a back garden, however refreshing is just not as fabulous as the taste of a crisp cold cider or lager.
The obvious issue is where to stop, Much easier after lime and soda.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 24/04/2020 01:06

Of course on MN if you drink more than a thimbleful to be polite at a wedding twice year you are a raving alcoholic who shouldn't be allowed near children

Haha so true, the smug sneering from the teetotallers is embarrassing.

I'm drinking more because I can. I'm also furloughed so not at work in the morning. Chin chin!

alittleprivacy · 24/04/2020 01:08

Alcohol is a known immunosuppressant which most particularly impairs pulmonary defences essential to eradicating infections. So yes it's actually so weird and stupid that people are hiding from a virus, wearing masks doing shopping, disinfecting their purchases. And the intentionally sitting down to damage their very ability to fight the exact kind of virus we're in the middle of a pandemic of.

PotterHarryWitch · 24/04/2020 01:27

I agree with you OP. I have friends that have been drinking everyday. I dont drink hardly ever (maybe on my bday/xmas). Alcohol doesnt agree with me. Always seems to give me a migraine and im always sick with them.

FromEden · 24/04/2020 01:48

And this effect happens the second after you swallow a sip of alcohol? Every single person who drinks any amount of alcohol is lowering their immune system? No, that's not true. Its chronic alcohol abuse that does this. a few extra drinks for a period of a few weeks is going to have a negligible effect. Stop scaremongering.

LilacTree1 · 24/04/2020 01:50

“ So yes it's actually so weird and stupid that people are hiding from a virus, wearing masks doing shopping, disinfecting their purchases.”

I don’t hide, wear a mask or disinfect shopping.
