And more so the almost bragging nature of it on social media? Feel like my Facebook / instagram is full of people showing their wine, beer, expression martinis! I get we are in a strange situation but can’t compute as to how for so many people that’s translated into drinking alcohol every day?? Or maybe it’s just my friends

OP posts:

Judging by the number of obese people waddling around I'd say it's too much scoffing that's the biggest health hazard. I'll bet if someone came on here and said 'I can't resist eating lots cakes and chocolate and cheer myself up' they would be told they NBU.
MOST people who enjoy a drink or two are not alcoholics and there is support for those who are.
Had my first Peroni at 11.30am yesterday, in the sunshine, it was bloody great!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/04/2020 08:37

I’m disliking it to OP. I hate how it was already the norm but not it seems far worse and, in many cases, being modelled to children.

Given it’s not great for health, I expected people to go the other way and be healthier to ensure they were as fit as possible should they fall ill.

dancingbadger · 24/04/2020 08:38

I'm afraid I think the whole thing is entirely predictable any sunny bank holiday in the uk and the beer and wine aisles are swept empty.
A couple of years ago I would have been drinking daily and making all the excuses for it. I'm so glad I don't drink now and haven't been caught up in self justifying competitiveness that your seeing on social media. Alcohol is highly addictive and will negatively affect people's physical and mental health but like any drug, addicts will find any reason to continue with their drug of choice. Op I would ignore let them crack on it's their bodies health/ mental well being if you do say anything you will just be vilified as a 'bore' etc.

opticaldelusion · 24/04/2020 08:39

When the lockdown lifts you're first on my party list, OP. You sound fun!

SueEllenMishke · 24/04/2020 08:40

Oh lovely. Another passive aggressive, judgy post 🙄

I sometimes forget that according to MN if you enjoy a drink or two you have a problem.

opticaldelusion · 24/04/2020 08:40

Yes, indeed. But I hardly think that everyone who has a drink is an alcoholic. Even if they're drinking more than usual at the moment.

Just because YOU had a problem, doesn't mean everyone does.

GreyGardens88 · 24/04/2020 08:43

I drank more at the start of lockdown but forced myself to cut down. I've not drunk since last Sunday lunchtime glass of wine. I will just drink on fridays and Saturdays now

Chillipeanuts · 24/04/2020 08:45

I can enjoy a drink some warm evenings atm because I don’t have to drive anywhere next day. Usually only drink at weekends.

Fluffybutter · 24/04/2020 08:46

What’s there for you to understand ?
The weather has been nice and days have been stressful so why not enjoy a few drinks in the week if you can do so safely ?
We get a weekly delivery from our local tap room to enjoy over the weekend in the garden and I’ve found a new love for aperol spritz

Sparklingplasters · 24/04/2020 08:47

I’m stressed to fuck, G&t in the sun is a nice wind down, I’ve reined it in this week, as it was getting to be everyday

Fluffybutter · 24/04/2020 08:48

@dancingbadger not a “bore”, no.
A judgemental person ? Yes .
Some of us can have a drink and not be alcoholics ,thanks .
Don’t tar us all with your brush

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 24/04/2020 08:57

I'm drinking maybe a bit more than normal. Like 2 glasses perhaps instead of 1 and every night instead of 5 nights. And sprits are only consumed at the weekend

Yabu to be judgey about it. So long as they are aren't being ott about it who cares. Also yabu it is espresso not expresso. However yanbu because espresso martinis are a waste of vodka and coffee

Lavenderpurple · 24/04/2020 08:59

If I wasn’t pregnant I’d be joining them, and I don’t drink very often under usual circumstances.

MrsMonicaBing · 24/04/2020 09:04

I don't drink, never have. I don't mind people thinking I'm 'boring' because I know the dangers of alcohol and choose not to engage. I like my liver failure free, thank you.

But I still think other people can do what they like, without having to endure judgement from others.

YinMnBlue · 24/04/2020 09:07

Espresso.

I don’t think people are necessarily drinking more, just spending more time on SM posting stupid ‘oooh look at me, aren’t I naughty / risqué/ glamorous/ disgraceful-in-a-hilarious-way’ stuff,

It’s a punctuation in a long day ‘wine o’clock’ oh how witty, etc.

I am more irritated by the inane SM posts than judgey of people enjoying a drink.

SueEllenMishke · 24/04/2020 09:09

Drinking in moderation doesn't give you liver failure 🙄

MrsMonicaBing · 24/04/2020 09:12

No, perhaps not in moderation. It just increases your chances of getting certain cancers, amongst other things. Google it if you like :)

circusintown · 24/04/2020 09:13

"Expresso martinis"

No no no. There is no x in espresso. Please make it stop

awesomeaircraft · 24/04/2020 09:13

YANBU. Alcohol is addictive and depressant. It is a worry when a large part of the population increases their consumption. Many will be good at managing their consumption, but there is a worry for the fraction that will struggle.

OpenWheelRace · 24/04/2020 09:25

YANBU OP
There's a lot of aggression on this thread, which usually indicates being overly defensive.

Drinking everyday is not healthy, could well lead to long term dependency and other medical issues.

But for some reason in the UK, drinking is seen as funny and cool - to not drink is seen as being judgemental, grumpy and boring.

SueEllenMishke · 24/04/2020 09:26

Thanks for the patronising comment mrsmonicabing I'm not stupid.

shinynewapple2020 · 24/04/2020 09:28

I'm amazed, considering all the threads I read about the supermarket police, that I manage to buy the amount of alcohol I do!

Mainly for DH who has always drink more than is good for him, but I've got the 'holiday' drinks mentality myself atm.

Applejaxx · 24/04/2020 09:35

I think going by this thread there are lots of posters with alcohol dependence issues on MN. That’s the only reason I can come up with to explain the defensive and dismissive attitude towards drinking on here.

Macncheeseballs · 24/04/2020 09:36

I drink alcohol and have a very robust immune system.

dancingbadger · 24/04/2020 09:40

@OpenWheelRace yes exactly!
It's interesting that I didn't put the word 'alcoholic' in my post which I think is an often misconstrued and offence term and yet I received 2 aggressive and defensive posts denying their own 'alcoholism' Hmm
