AIBU to find it strange how much people are drinking at the moment

And more so the almost bragging nature of it on social media? Feel like my Facebook / instagram is full of people showing their wine, beer, expression martinis! I get we are in a strange situation but can’t compute as to how for so many people that’s translated into drinking alcohol every day?? Or maybe it’s just my friends

OP posts:

I do think people are probably drinking too much which isn't the best coping mechanism especially if this all ends up going on longer than expected and it's become a daily habit. I'm drinking more than before (I now have a drink Friday and Saturday night whereas before it was just nights out) but most friends say they are drinking daily. I totally get why they are - people are anxious and agitated and need to find a way to relax and feel normal. Whether alcohol is the answer is another matter!

AintNoMaryPoppins · 23/04/2020 23:05

YABU. I'm on Christmas rules when it comes to food and alcohol right now.

Doggybiccys · 23/04/2020 23:06

@user2323232323 - you could say that about heroin addicts

Luckingfovely · 23/04/2020 23:06

I think that you should probably just bore off and stop judging other people for however they are trying to cope in this situation.

Jellycat74 · 23/04/2020 23:07

Espresso

justasking111 · 23/04/2020 23:09

OH on a whats app group, sports club related. He reads out some of the posts to me, people some days sitting in the garden in the afternoon getting merrier. jokes and spelling get worse as the day goes on. Grin

Blackandgreenteas · 23/04/2020 23:11

I just feel so jealous!

  1. I’ve had what I assume is corona and have no energy even without drinking,
  2. I’m a single mum to two kids and so have to be fairly with it the next day to parent them
  3. I have no one to drink with (see above) which, while it doesn’t exactly stop me, takes a bit of the joy out of it!
  4. I’m still working from home so need some energy for that and not a permanent hangover!

But I’m jealous rather than judgey!

Highonpotandused · 23/04/2020 23:14

I'm teetotal and I go for drinks/meals with colleagues but I get so bored with people who just want to talk about their favourite alcohol or favourite places to drink alcohol. So fucking boring and pathetic that some people need alcohol to have a life.

Of course the issue is not people drinking, it's the incessant talking about it.

SpillTheTea · 23/04/2020 23:14

Why is it strange?

Fredthedoggie · 23/04/2020 23:14

I’ve had what I assume is corona

Should have stuck with Peroni. Corona is like gnats piss.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 23/04/2020 23:17

People need to get by right now as best they can. It’s not my way, but so what?

HerRoyalNotness · 23/04/2020 23:20

Our town has a foodie page that dedicated a weekly post to where we can find to go drinks, mostly frozen margarita by the gallon and such.

Isn’t the expression ‘eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die’ well known where you are?

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/04/2020 23:21

Whatever gets me through the week in one piece.
5 weeks I've been on my own at home, it's not fun.

GrolliffetheDragon · 23/04/2020 23:23

I have so many plates full right now a couple of glasses of wine is helping with my anxiety

Alcohol is terrible for anxiety. I try and keep it down to one glass two to three times a week.

PawPawNoodle · 23/04/2020 23:26

I'm drinking less, oddly enough. I thought I'd be pissed every night.

MargotB7 · 23/04/2020 23:27

I just knew there would be someone starting a thread on Mumsnet about drinking. Stop it, none of your business.

iMoan7 · 23/04/2020 23:30

I’m kind of surprised by the number of my mum friends who are drinking at 4pm while watching their kids. Not in a judgy way at all - it just seems such a waste to me. I couldn’t enjoy it the same way! I always wait till they are asleep. THEN I can properly chill out and enjoy a glass of wine —or five—

iMoan7 · 23/04/2020 23:33

That said. DH and i are working from home in shifts around the kids just now. I don’t think I’d be massively impressed if I came down the stairs at 4 and he was caning a beer. I’m not really all that sure why though.

LEELULUMPKIN · 23/04/2020 23:33

No I don't find it strange at all and I am not a drinker.

I don't think you do either really OP, it's just a snarky, judgy dig at those who do.

thisislovelyme · 23/04/2020 23:35

Um no it's really not strange.

RozHuntleysStump · 23/04/2020 23:36

We’re all just doing what we can to get through these long, boring as fuck days. Judge ye not! Also ‘espresso’.

Samtsirch · 23/04/2020 23:39

@mumof2exhausted
Only by recognising you from many of your other posts, I find it strange that you are finding it so strange.
😏

Popc0rn · 23/04/2020 23:40

I'm drinking a lot less. I like the odd drink of gin or cider, but don't really drink at home, plus alcohol makes any anxiety I have worse, and as a nurse redeployed on a covid ward, my anxiety is through the roof atm.

Looking forward to when this is all over and I can sit in my local pub and have a drink!

Samtsirch · 23/04/2020 23:41

@mumof2exhausted
Remember, we know what you did
😂🤣😆

chipsandgin · 23/04/2020 23:43

Nope not strange - drinking is fun, we don’t have to drive, the suns out, the worlds gone to shit...I couldn’t give any fucks at all as to what anyone thinks.

I also don’t waste my time posting on social media, each to their own though - there’s plenty else to worry about or judge right now OP, unless they’re drinking in groups/breaking lockdown then just ignore and move on..
