A bottle a night too much?

Just that. It has become a habit since lockdown. A bottle of wine over the course of the evening 4-5 nights per week.
AIBU to think it's too much?

Yes too much

EdwynCollins · 23/04/2020 16:02

That isn't what I said. I suggested she save heavy drinking for later in life
Another example. I met a 92 year old who, following a cardiac arrest, had been advised by the dietician not to eat prawns. She was very upset because they were her favourite food. If I got to 92 I would eat prawns every day if I chose to
It is not the same as advising to smoke 40 a day or not wear a seatbelt

EdwynCollins · 23/04/2020 16:03

I also didn't say my friend had a bottle of wine a day all her life

midnightstar66 · 23/04/2020 16:03

Yes it's too much, I'm a lone parent and I'm doing the same. Very easily done but need to cut down. Apart from anything else we aren't having glass collections so I've got quite the supply of empties Blush

My tricks to limit wine consumption:

  • at "wine O'Clock" I have a soft drink I like and a bag of crisps 3/4 nights a week. It almost feels the same (yeah right!)
  • as I prefer white wine I don't put any in the fridge until it's a wine night although I would drink it with ice if I were desperate
It's not much but it helps me
Cornettoninja · 23/04/2020 16:11

alcohol not only affects your liver

This is true - pancreatitis is a common trigger to investigate your liver.

Yup I use little tricks like @Davros....

Strict one bottle a week
Same - white only in fridge/freezer only just prior to drink
Since pandemic i have bought a box of coke no sugar cans to have a treat at the end of day to circumvent wine urges. knew it was going to get stressful and I'd gravitate to the bottle.

DH works in wine so we are literally swimming in it. I have a Uni degree in it and worked it before kids. I genuinely love it. don't have to buy it so I have to be sooo disciplined because the health ramifications long term are shit. I'm around too many functional alcoholics and as wise Kim ( ala kath and Kim) sez "pissed mothers is such a bad look" 😏 (Jk)

Couscousy · 23/04/2020 16:39

It's very easy to finish a bottle once it's open, but you know a bottle a night is definitely too much. If I have one gin, I want a second, a third...so I limit the nights I'm 'allowed' to drink, just Friday nights.

I don't buy bottles of anything anymore for this reason, because I know I'll drink the whole bottle (can't help myself) and then it affects my sleep and mental health.

Redlocks28 · 23/04/2020 16:42

I have a Uni degree in it

In drinking wine?

Skeletoninatutu · 23/04/2020 16:44

Lol Pretty much....Wine & beverage marketing

MsTSwift · 23/04/2020 16:46

If it’s open I drink it! So I don’t open any bottles in the week. Wine is so lovely but the effects of it are not!

Tellmetruth4 · 23/04/2020 16:47

Yes too much but you’re far from the only one. Don’t worry about it now just focus on getting through this BS time and cut down when it’s over.

ThrowbackMagic · 23/04/2020 16:47

Yes, it’s too much. I used to drink like this a few years back and I find it hard to believe now. You build up a tolerance but it’s so bad for your mental and physical health. You definitely start craving it too.

I had half a bottle of wine last night (usually have a glass or two 1-2 times a week, if that, these days) and I feel rubbish today. Looking forward to a few days of no drinking and feeling fresh.

Abraid2 · 23/04/2020 16:52

What helped me cut down was buying 125ml wine glasses.

NiteFlights · 23/04/2020 16:55

I agree with Prawnofthepatriarchy. You know it’s becoming a problem, or you wouldn’t ask. Get on top of it now, before you pass the point of no return.

There are loads of non-alcoholic and very low alcohol wines around now, so you could try those for a change. Find other ways to help relax and give yourself a well-deserved treat.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 16:58

I am so tame. I'd be worried I had a nasty habit if I was drinking a glass every day.
At 50, I have only once had an entire bottle of wine to myself, and felt awful!

feemcgee · 23/04/2020 17:21

Hi brassers, don't beat yourself up about this. I've been in a similar position as you, drinking a box of wine plus another bottle within a week. I realised this was over 30 units a week when I checked on the Drink Aware app. I've now pledged three drink-free days and worked out what I'm going to have on drinking days. I'm going to buy bottles not boxes. The app says that a bottle of wine and one of prosecco is still too much, but it's way less than I was drinking! Good luck x

RaisinsRuinEverything · 23/04/2020 17:23

Have ice cream, cake or chocolate instead. Far nicer!
This! We all need treats. Have a treat that doesn’t rot your liver and give you a hangover. Doesn’t have to be sweet, could be cheese, olives, nuts, crisps etc

feemcgee · 23/04/2020 17:23

I'd noticed my face looked puffy in zoom meetings, which prompted the check-in with my booze consumption.

TuscanGreen · 23/04/2020 17:25

It is too much but understand how it is easy to do

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/04/2020 17:29

I’d definitely not be buying anymore if you are the only adult in the household and therefore responsible solely for the children.

Northernsoullover · 23/04/2020 17:37

I used to drink a bottle a night Blush. I tried everything to cut down but in the end I just had to stop. It wasn't easy to begin with but now I am over a year I rarely miss it (although lockdown has had its moments). I recommend reading something like Alcohol Lied to me by Craig Beck or Jason Vale kick the drink easily. They really made me see alcohol differently and made quitting easier than just white knuckling it.

Onone · 23/04/2020 17:43

Yes it’s too much but I’m in the same boat at the minute

PurpleDaisies · 23/04/2020 17:46

It’s good you’ve realised you’re drinking too much now. It’s easier to break the habit the earlier you recognise it’s getting to be a problem.

Just think of all those calories and money you’re saving, as well as reducing your risk of all sorts of diseases.

Darbs76 · 23/04/2020 17:49

Yes. I got into the habit for years thinking nothing of drinking a whole bottle in one night. I never drink at home now, health reasons made me stop and now I can see that I drank way too much and it wasn’t healthy. Thats 7 bottles a week which is way more than a healthy amount. Stick to one glass a night
