A bottle a night too much?

Just that. It has become a habit since lockdown. A bottle of wine over the course of the evening 4-5 nights per week.
AIBU to think it's too much?

Yeah it's a lot... very very easily done tho.
Also need to remember with wine that alcohol units vary bottle to bottle. some can be as low as 5% alcohol and others can be up round 14.5 - 15% - so depending on what you are drinking you could be drinking wayyyy over recommended/"safe" consumption units.
slamming thru a bottle of moscato a night is different to a big red.

ivfbabymomma1 · 23/04/2020 14:00

Easily done! Especially in this heat in the garden! But yes not ideal!

MimiLaRue · 23/04/2020 14:01

At first that will get you completely trollied but once you get used to it you will be able to handle it perfectly well

I hate to tell you this but that is NOT a good sign. It means your liver is over loaded and is used to having to process alcohol every single day. Thats why alcoholics have a huge tolerance and have to drink alot to still get the effects

MissMarks · 23/04/2020 14:03

You shouldn’t be drinking a whole bottle at weekends either if you are on your own with the kids.

theemmadilemma · 23/04/2020 14:08

@peoplewhoannoyyou

The problem is when one stops giving the same level, the second bottle comes along... and so on.

Yes it's too much, cut down, don't let it be the start of a slippery road.

gamerchick · 23/04/2020 14:10

Try on your jeans in a few weeks or smart clothes. All those calories have to go somewhere.

FlamingoAndJohn · 23/04/2020 14:11

Far too much. You’ll be forever having to traipse to the bottle bank.

lastqueenofscotland · 23/04/2020 14:12

I’m a big drinker especially but mumsnet standards but that really is a huge amount.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 23/04/2020 14:13

I'm a long time sober alcoholic and I'd warn you that if you carry on drinking like that you'll soon be in deep trouble, the kind of trouble that only stopping drinking forever will cure.

If you don't cut back you'll eventually lose the capacity to drink socially. Drinking every day is a bad idea. Stick to half a bottle two nights a week. You don't want a booze problem. No one who's drinking a bottle of wine a night can be truly present as a parent.

Figgygal · 23/04/2020 14:13

I don’t think I could physically drink that much every night and I do like wine
Still trying to resist in the week chocolate biscuits thats another story however there’s far too many of those going on

CrazyToast · 23/04/2020 14:13

Sadly yes it is a lot but way too easy to do. I've been drinking too much too but am trying to reign it in now.

managedmis · 23/04/2020 14:14

Yeah, I have 2 glasses per night.

FireandFury · 23/04/2020 14:15

Yes, too much imo. How about just having a drink over the weekend? That’s what we do now and it works well for us.

papiermaches · 23/04/2020 14:15

Too much, We we’re drinking so much at the start that I’m giving myself a dry 30 days!
It’s so easily done, but really, what’s the point?

BusterGonad · 23/04/2020 14:15

I had a bottle last night and was pissed, I couldn't do it every night but with lock down me and my husband have been having 2 medium sized glasses in the evenings.

Nonnymum · 23/04/2020 14:15

Yes it is. But I am maybe not impartial as I have a friend who is an alcoholic. She only drinks wine and she started drinking only to relieve her anxiety. Since seeing what it has done to her I have been more or less tea total.
On the other hand I know that doesn't happen to everyone and I can see why people are drinking at the moment.

Cornettoninja · 23/04/2020 14:16

The point you start questioning it is probably the point you know that it’s too much and should cut down while you still can imho.

A bottle of wine a day is a lot by any known way of measuring it and the problem is you’ll have very little warning that your liver can’t take much more.

It’s worth considering why you’re drinking. If it’s to help you sleep or calm anxiety investigate other ways to combat those and speak with your GP if necessary. CBD oil might be worth considering trying alongside other therapies like mindfulness and meditation (depends on your personality whether you’ll give those a fair trial). So many people don’t even realise they’re self medicating.

theemmadilemma · 23/04/2020 14:22

@Nonnymum

Easily made mistake. She knows long term it causes anxiety right?

Abraid2 · 23/04/2020 14:24

It's a huge risk factor for a number of cancers.

derxa · 23/04/2020 14:25

I drink a bottle a night.

TofutiKline · 23/04/2020 14:26

Yes it’s a ridiculous amount. Trouble is for some reason wine drinking is generally viewed as more acceptable than other types of alcohol.

If you posted asking if it was ok to drink an equal number of units in cans of Stella you’d have everyone looking down at you.

Disquieted1 · 23/04/2020 14:27

I hate the holier than thou lectures about NHS guidelines and units.
A bottle of wine every night is probably excessive but easily done, especially now.
The OP knows the score. They always do on these threads.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 23/04/2020 14:37

If you were sharing it with someone else it would still be too much every night...

twinnywinny14 · 23/04/2020 14:40

If I had that much wine in then I would drink it. I buy a bottle or two when shopping once a week and then we also have a G&T but we only drink fri-sun. The first week of lockdown we drank a lot but then made the change. We found it easier to say no drinking on x days than reducing the amount but still drinking every day x

TheOrigBrave · 23/04/2020 14:44

YABU to think it's too much, you should know it is too much.

I think you do.
