Elton John

Did anyone else think something wasn’t right when Elton John was singing in world together? He sounded like his tongue was too big for mouth. Myself and DP had a good giggle at his performance. Apologies if this offends anyone, I completely understand the cause it was for and appreciate our front line/key workers, DP is a front line worker and I’m vulnerable.

OP posts:

He is 73 ! I hope I can still sing - or even talk - as well as that at 73.

Plantlover101 · 20/04/2020 03:32

I don't think he sounds weird -perhaps it's just the lack of studio refinements and adjustments. Artists always sound different "live". I just think it's a cracking song. What a treat!

twirlycat77 · 20/04/2020 03:42

Bronzedoor72 I cant imagine a single couple in the country who could have watched that performance and not commentated on how atrocious he was. Most normal people would have a good giggle.

ConcentricCircles · 20/04/2020 05:36

I loved Elton in the 70's and his album 'Yellow Brick Road' was one of the best he ever made.

THEN:
Listen to 'Your Sister Can't Twist' (but she can rock and roll) from that album.

NOW:
He was young and fit then - as were we all. Sometimes we think we still are, I know I do. He was struggling to breathe correctly in this performance so didn't have the strength to carry the notes.
But singing is his life and sometimes it's hard to know when to stop doing what you love,.

virginpinkmartini · 20/04/2020 06:05

'Haha' at the posters getting enraged on behalf of notoriously mega-bitch Elton, as if he would piss on you if you were on fire 😂

I'm sure multimillionaire, household name Elton John will survive a Mumsnetter criticising/ laughing at his sub-par performance. I suspect his crap singing was more to do with the trout pout than anything, and if not, then oh well. He chose to put himself out there to receive some scrutiny. If more information comes out that health issues are 100 percent the cause for his rubbish singing, then it would be unreasonable to have a pop. But you can't live life scared to have an opinion just in case someone might have underlying health problems, it's frankly patronising.

DartmoorChef · 20/04/2020 06:08

Paul McCartney sounded much worse

JellyNo15 · 20/04/2020 06:53

OP you are getting a hard time here. DH and I were looking forward to him singing but we were also of the opinion he sounded awful and yes, he sounded like a "pub singer". I didn't know he had been unwell but if he wasn't anywhere near his normal standard he should not have sung.

Paul McCartney was poor too. Tom Jones was in a league of his own.

Dieu · 20/04/2020 07:21

He looks and sounds bloody ridiculous.

professorbean · 20/04/2020 07:41

Haven't seen Elton John but Macca was awful! What was that muzakky version of the song all about??

Mick Jagger is amazing!

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 20/04/2020 08:10

Oh FFS only here would you get ripped to shreds for noticing that a formerly excellent musician sounded like a parody of himself. I did laugh OP and you know what it was much needed, that's two colleagues and a friend of my father's I've lost to this so far and I've still got to go into work this morning without adequate PPE. Thanks Elton 👍

sleepingpup · 20/04/2020 08:18

I think after he'd done his roots he did his own lip fillers.

It did sound weird.

And I love EJ.

WoollyFoolly · 20/04/2020 08:22

He was terrible, he did sound like a caricature of himself. I thought the whole show was pretty awful, I was expecting it to be uplifting but it was mostly tiresome dirges. Tom Jones was fantastic, Andrea Bocelli and celine Dion were great. We commented that they only needed mick Jagger, the rest of the Rolling Stones didn't add much to the performance.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/04/2020 09:28

I've been a fan of Elton John since the 1970s but there's no denying that neither his singing nor his piano playing were their usual standard last night.

TheVanguardSix · 20/04/2020 09:34

For the gift that is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I won't say a word against him.
I cut older performers huge slack. I thought most people did.

Bluesheep8 · 20/04/2020 09:48

I didn't watch the programme precisely because I heard a clip of Elton on the radio. I've heard Paul McCartney on the radio this morning. I am even more pleased with my decision Grin

LadyEloise · 20/04/2020 09:48

I thought Elton was great and commented so to the family, compared to Paul Mc Cartney who really didn't sound great, but at his age and being such a music legend that's ok.

Charlie Watts was hilarious.
Weren't they all fantastic to do it.

LakieLady · 20/04/2020 09:52

He was pretty poor, McCartney also

We only saw the clips that were in the trailers earlier in the day, but McCartney sounded absolutely dreadful.

He really needs to jack in the singing.

Dogmatix34 · 20/04/2020 09:55

Some of the replies on here are ridiculous. It was clear he wasn’t up to scratch neither was Paul McCartney. He’s hardly some vulnerable old man, he’s a highly respected, incredibly rich and confident mega star. He chose to be on the show. Mick Jagger however was incredible I thought although the other 3 in the band not so much!

BirdieDance · 20/04/2020 09:56

Oh dear. Maybe singing a song like that with no proper backing wasn't the best plan. He left himself very exposed, couldn't hit all the notes and couldn't make his words clear.

Intothefuture · 20/04/2020 09:57

I think it’s ok to wonder what was actually wrong with him though. He was shouting in a staccato way and wasn’t pronouncing his ‘s’es. I’ve never heard him do that.

TheFredericaQuartet · 20/04/2020 10:07

It shows a certain kind of arrogance to think health care workers would appreciate such a dreadful performance. Elton should have just written a cheque.

TheFredericaQuartet · 20/04/2020 10:08

Weren't they all fantastic to do it

Not really.

BossAssBitch · 20/04/2020 10:53

@Karwomannghia
Yeah ‘I’m dill dandin, yeah yeah yeah” I though maybe he’d had too much Botox

Grin

oh snowflakes, do fuck off ! Elton John has been known to be one of the biggest bitches in showbiz, I'm sure he can take it

BossAssBitch · 20/04/2020 10:55

@TheFredericaQuartet
Elton should have just written a cheque

Grin
CaptainButtock · 20/04/2020 11:30

Jesus wept I can't stop laughing.

Thanks op, I needed that x
