To think how dare she! I haven’t done anything wrong have I?

So, a friend of mine took it upon herself to tell me off last night. Why? Because I ordered some birthday cards online for my family including my ds who is 16 in a few weeks and my mum who’s 60 a few days later. Now it’s rare I order anything online as usually I like to go into shops, but considering card shops are shut and Tesco and Asda in my area are running low on cards I thought I’d order some online.

She told me it’s people like me adding to the crisis ordering non essential stuff and I’m not thinking of the delivery people risking heir lives. To be honest at first it upset me as she’s supposed to be my friend but then I got really angry. When I thought about it I’ve come to realise just how bloody judgemental she is. It was my dd’s birthday the first week of lockdown and my friend messaged me whilst I was waiting in the queue at Asda. I had gone for some essential food items but also to get my dd some balloons and banners. I hadn’t gone solely for the balloons and banners etc yet my friend called me irresponsible. My Facebook news feed is full of people ordering bbq’s, swimming pools play equipment, clothes etc but I haven’t commented because one it’s not my place to tell people what to buy and two it’s none of my fooking business. AIBU?

Perhaps look at it from the couriers point of view, most likely self employed so very pleased people are still ordering online and they have work and money coming in to support their family!

Seriously, some people just have nothing better to do then tell everyone they are doing it wrong!

Justgorgeous · 18/04/2020 14:27

I have just ordered a couple of gifts from Amazon and some body wash I haven’t been able to get for my daughter in the supermarket I have not used them in 6 weeks but cards, gifts and a few essentials are fine. Birthdays are not cancelled.

ToffeeYoghurt · 18/04/2020 14:27

I ordered some cards online last week. I bought from a charity's online webshop. They need the money more than ever at a time when people have less go spare or are obviously preoccupied with Covid.

PhilCornwall1 · 18/04/2020 14:28

@TopShelf Thank you, it was last Saturday, but still he hasn't done or said anything, I won't bother contacting him in all this either.

BlueEyedPersephone · 18/04/2020 14:30

Online shopping is helping companies who would otherwise cease to trade as furlough only helps with wage bill not other costs of running business, tell her to fuck off as she is clearly to stupid to realise if we all stop online shopping the economy will be in an even worse state when we comfort of this

BlueEyedPersephone · 18/04/2020 14:35

Come out of not comfort MNHQ - give us the edit button

wheretonow123 · 18/04/2020 14:40

OP, you have done nothing wrong.

I would just give her a wide bearth. If she comes up with similar again tell her to pi$$ off.

Jenasaurus · 18/04/2020 14:49

on a similar topic, is Moonpig frowned upon for birthday cards?

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 18/04/2020 14:55

Shes being ridiculous, ive had loads of stuff delivered. DD1 has outgrown her toddler bed so i had a mattress delivered from amazon, bedding delivered from asda, ive also had 2 seperate deliveries from asda of clothes because DD2 and DS had outgrown all their clothes. Also had a delivery from the works of craft supplies for the children and various other items from amazon. By the time i get to the door the delivery driver is already back in their van, a quick wave and off they go.

Lynda07 · 18/04/2020 15:09

Bollocks to your friend, nothing wrong in ordering cards or any stationary. You're keeping people in work for a start.

I wish I'd ordered some Easter cards. I had a few from last year which I distributed but they were mainly the leftovers, just bunny rabbits and churches. Nice enough but I am usually more inventive. My cousin was the same, she sent me a tiny one with a lamb - I told her it was sweet and it was. She had a bunny from me.

Daftodil · 18/04/2020 15:10

I think she is overreacting, but if she is worried about the dangers of her job, she should discuss her concerns with her employers.

Maybe best to tape the envelopes closed rather than lick them at the mo, but I don't think sending post is the crime of the century.

9ofpentangles · 18/04/2020 15:14

It's keeping the economy going, isn't it.

I am an essential worker and use deliveries, too, because most shops are shut

Lindy2 · 18/04/2020 15:15

You've done nothing wrong.

The delivery driver would be out working anyway and you have financially supported the card company and the delivery driver.

Excessive and pointless buying isn't helpful but buying the normal things you need will help keep some businesses afloat.

TheNoodlesIncident · 18/04/2020 15:42

Seriously, some people just have nothing better to do then tell everyone they are doing it wrong!

I think this sums it up tbh.

Some people just can't get on with it themselves without having to trumpet their views to everyone else. It's so tedious. I haven't looked at local pages on Facebook, if I needed help I might but my neighbours and I have come to a reciprocal arrangement to help each other. I might be missing out on people doing lockdown better than everyone else, but I can't see it and don't care. I don't have the inclination to stare out the windows and assume people outside are being naughty either, and even if I did I couldn't be arsed accusing them of anything on SM or in RL. I have better things to do MN and online browsing mostly

OP, just block her or ignore her for a while, you don't need the negativity right now.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/04/2020 15:48

My sister and son ordered cards online for my birthday delivered by the postman.

Don't see the difference between that and the pointless letter Boris sent to everyone (which hasn't turned up yet)

Billben · 18/04/2020 17:19

Your friend is being ridiculous but only because she can AFFORD to be ridiculous. If she lost her job, her DH’s wages would support her. So losing her job doesn’t mean as much to her as it would mean to somebody else who hasn’t got anybody else to fall back on.

StrangeLookingParasite · 18/04/2020 19:19

This time is just a god send for the virtue signallers and pearl clutchers. They are in their element.

Isn't it, though.
Sanctimonious twats.

terrigrey · 18/04/2020 19:31

I think it's great we have such a strong online retail sector.
I know of several small businesses who are managing to sell online as their shops are closed.
That means they can still employ their staff and not add to the mass of people furloughed / on UC.
That's brilliant.
Don't we want some economy left after the lockdown is lifted?

terrigrey · 18/04/2020 19:33

I have bought toys etc to send to my young relatives through the post (I don't use companies like amazon, but small companies) and it brightens up their day, which in turn brightens up my day.
Which I need at the moment.

lifestooshort123 · 18/04/2020 20:32

I've ordered loads of stuff online - coal-tar soap, concealer pencil, Essie nail polish, Elbow Grease spray, books, batteries for kitchen scales, cotton squares to make face masks, Clinique night cream.... have I forgotten anything? Probably. All things I couldn't get in my local sainsburys. I want shops to still be here when we're allowed out (oh, and I get easily bored). My cousin is a postie and says go for it.

HappydaysArehere · 19/04/2020 01:16

Surely ordering on line is supporting businesses which would otherwise go under. The delivery drivers are at risk but so are their jobs if purchases are not made.

Monkeynuts18 · 19/04/2020 06:57

She’s just another one making up rules. Mostly because she’s lazy and would rather not be at work. See also: passport office staff, Holland & Barrett staff. Snore.

Jack80 · 19/04/2020 19:33

Ignore her, we have ordered off Amazon things we felt essential but may not to orhers

Pepernotenregen · 19/04/2020 19:37

I think shopping online is the only way to keep the economy from completely stagnating. Time to cool down that friendship.

Zhuleva · 19/04/2020 19:41

This whole thing has been such a gift to the sanctimonious community. Just ignore her - she's fishing for you to acknowledge her as a critical front-line worker (she's not) and that you are a terrible person for breaking isolation rules (you're not, and you aren't). Ignore her.
