Isn’t there a princess in Europe that’s now working as a HCA?

A queen somewhere in Asia cooking for the poor?

Harry and Meghan delivering meals?

Bet if Diana was here she’d be out doing everything in her power to help the ordinary folk 💪

Whatever they do or don’t do, someone - or rather many people - will be criticising or having a go.

If Kate was volunteering to empty hospital bedpans in her own, home-sewn scrubs someone would be vilifying her for muscling in on the ‘I’m so nobly virtuous’ glory.

Wolfgirrl · 18/04/2020 11:11

@gettinglikemymother

But they're never damned because they do, are they? They're always damned because they dont. Which is the lazy option.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 18/04/2020 11:12

Thing is, they are irrelevant and unnecessary. This pandemic only highlights this and makes it even more obvious. There is no place for the royals in modern world

This. If this pandemic has shown us something it is how irrelevant they all are.

For the poster who said skip Charlie and go straight to William, err thats not the way it works. With a royal family you get what you're given. If you want a choice in who is the head of state you'd have a president. What a novel idea. Voting for your choice........voting them out again.

Whatafustercluck · 18/04/2020 11:18

I have no particular dislike of them. They seem nice enough. But "home-schooling their children"?? Don't make me laugh. Their staff will include a live-in private tutor.

Mamamia456 · 18/04/2020 11:26

Wolfgirrl - See you're still trotting out the same old stuff. What is it with you and Kate and batch cooking meals!

crosspelican · 18/04/2020 11:28

There's a lot they could be doing, and I agree that right now from the outside they do seem especially pointless.

But I agree with the poster above who said the Can you imagine if The Queen and Prince Charles both died in rapid succession and then William became seriously ill?

Given the ages of the people ahead of him (Queen, Charles) Buckingham Palace does have to prepare for the very real possibility that there could be a King William happening sooner rather than later, so he has to be "shielded". So I can see why he's not being allowed outside the door right now.

Also I think that HQ has a pathological desire to appear neutral, dignified and hushed at all times. This might have been appropriate in 1950, but it's massively inappropriate now.

They need to transmit a message of "rolling up our sleeves and pitching in at this hour of need" and bombard us with images and updates of William and Kate furiously raising money, busily leveraging their influence to support XYZ charity, the NHS, mental health services etc.

But because they're not allowed to be seen as partisan the impression we get is "pampered calm" - actively harming the impression of the royal family with the younger voters who may well be asked to vote on the future of the royal family some day.

SacramentoQueen · 18/04/2020 11:29

Very little of their money comes from the sovereign grant, and even that can’t really be called tax payers money. I’m no monarchist - couldn’t really care less either way, but if you are going to have an opinion on them, at least base it on fact

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 18/04/2020 11:31

damned if they do and damned if they dont. We have no right to personally criticise a young cuople who are doing their best. I am not a royalist but the abuse is very base behaviour

Pelleas · 18/04/2020 11:43

Given the ages of the people ahead of him (Queen, Charles) Buckingham Palace does have to prepare for the very real possibility that there could be a King William happening sooner rather than later, so he has to be "shielded". So I can see why he's not being allowed outside the door right now.

There is no more reason for William to be shielded than any other man of his age.

Leaving aside the argument that we do not need a Royal family, the nature of succession means that there's a never-ending supply of people in line to the throne (or, at least, the supply would only end with the demise of the world's population). Of course, I don't wish untimely death on any of the Royals (as I don't wish it on any humans) but if William were to die, the throne would pass to George (then Charlotte, Louis, Harry, Archie, Andrew, Beatrice, Eugenie, Edward and so on).

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 18/04/2020 11:44

damned if they do and damned if they dont.

They don't. Ever. That's probably the reason they're damned.

bettybattenburg · 18/04/2020 11:48

Their staff will include a live-in private tutor.

Why would they have a private tutor? Two of the children are at school and a 2 year old doesn't need one.

MarshaBradyo · 18/04/2020 11:53

Maybe not a tutor but a live in nanny is a different ball game to most. No wrangling the toddler while the other dc need to read etc

A nanny could easily pick up the schooling part.

Whatever way you look at it saying they are home schooling three children is elevating their effort above the majority of people’s experiences. Much more of a doddle with help.

MarshaBradyo · 18/04/2020 11:56

And part of their trying to be relevant is saying we’re the same, it’s all a fudge.

I’m surprised anyone sees all that and thinks oh fab that’s really helping me.

Wolfgirrl · 18/04/2020 11:57

@Mamamia456

What is it with you not answering questions?

Wolfgirrl · 18/04/2020 11:58

@NoMorePoliticsPlease

But they're not just a young couple. They are future head of state. They live in splendour at the expense of the taxpayer. Why cant we hold them to account?

rjebgf · 18/04/2020 11:59

She has THREE little kids! Who do you want to look after them. Someone outside their household????

I did wonder when H&M were out delivering stuff, who was looking after their baby? I thought households were supposed to be isolated.

Mamamia456 · 18/04/2020 12:01

Wolfgirrl - I've answered your questions on the other royal family threads. You just don't like the answers.

Wolfgirrl · 18/04/2020 12:02

@Mamamia456

You havent answered about the Duchy food. You havent answered about the Sovereign grant. You havent answered about kate cooking. You never have.

Pelleas · 18/04/2020 12:02

Quite, Marsha. Let's assume for a moment that they are genuinely picking up the schooling themselves. They won't be juggling it with housework, life admin, shopping, WFH or going out to work, as most families are having to do. Any pretence that 'we are all in this together' from them is nonsense.

As far as I'm concerned, they are damned because they don't. If there was any evidence at all that they were doing anything which might be called 'work' to bolster the national efforts then I would have a little less contempt for them.

Wolfgirrl · 18/04/2020 12:02

@rjebgf

They have a nanny.

Freddiefox · 18/04/2020 12:02

damned if they do and damned if they dont
They never do though do they. They wait and wait until the very last moment and throw a few crumbs our way. They clearly dislike the public. There is so much they could be doing But they don’t, so they are dammed.

LaurieMarlow · 18/04/2020 12:03

I look around my very ordinary neighbourhood and I see people making meals for health workers, sewing scrubs, sending cards to vulnerable people, checking in on them and organising delivery of groceries.

I then see people in the public eye running exercise classes for kids, dance classes, art tutorials, school tutoring, reading stories - all virtually.

And the Cambridge’s can’t do any of this things to help the country in a crisis? Really? When so many others can? Beyond making a few phone calls in their massive luxury pad?

Obviously some of the things I’ve mentioned are more achievable than others, but seriously, they couldn’t find a single thing to put their energies into at this time?

It’s an extremely poor show.

LaurieMarlow · 18/04/2020 12:04

Who do you want to look after them. Someone outside their household????

Are you seriously working off the assumption that they’ve no staff with them?

Mamamia456 · 18/04/2020 12:04

Wolfgirrl - I think you'll find I did.

Freddiefox · 18/04/2020 12:05

She has THREE little kids! Who do you want to look after them. Someone outside their household????
Do you really think it’s just the three children and Kate and wills together in that big house? No staff or Nannies? Seriously don’t fall for the ‘we’re just normal folk routine’
