Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

Liberal use of the word disgusting on this thread. There are some delicate little flowers about.

BarbaraofSeville · 18/04/2020 06:01

Who wants to wee on wee

Why on earth does it matter what your piss lands on?

This thread just demonstrates how spoilt some people are. In the UK, we are incredibly fortunate to have instant access to virtually unlimited clean drinking water that is affordable to almost everyone and we use a good proportion of it to flush our toilets without a care in the world and proclaim anyone who tries to reduce their use of it 'disgusting'.

A significant minority of the world's population do not have access to flushing toilets and have to walk miles to collect water for drinking and cooking that isn't even as clean as the water that we throw down our toilets without a care in the world. Now that's disgusting.

I can bet that even though our family flush during the night, we use less water in our loos over a 24hr period than most of those who don’t flush during the night and cite saving water/environment as the reason.

I spent hours researching cisterns and loos when we got our bathrooms redone. Ours have 2 flushing buttons including an eco flush. The water comes out really quick and hard. Even a poo flush ends in a couple of quiet seconds. None of that loads of water, sounding like a train going past for 5 minutes with strange honking pipe noises and water still trickling to refill cistern for another 5 minutes malarkey.

Inefficient and cheaply made systems waste water and make noise. There’s a big difference between a £50 Homebase job and a £300 Gerberit one. It’s more money up front but it’s designed better and saves money long term and would mean you don’t have to walk into pee smells from several people first thing and all pee smells, some worse than others but I can always smell pee no matter how clear it is. Your noses have just acclimatised to the smell.

Agree Barbara

Well said Barbara and MagicBaby

We don’t flush overnight. I’m on my way home from night shift, I’ll get in about half 6 and I won’t flush the downstairs loo either in case it wakes someone Grin when my dp gets up he’ll flush upstairs (he’ll only get up if the kids waken) and then he’ll do downstairs as he goes through to sort breakfast. No point in wasting water and a scrub with the loo brush does the trick for stains, no bleach needed.

ColourMyDreams · 18/04/2020 06:56

Flush after every use in my house, day and night. It never woke any of the kids up.

squeekums · 18/04/2020 07:13

Flush after every use here, i cant imagine not flushing, be like you missed a whole step of the toilet process

triedandtestedteacher · 18/04/2020 07:14

No just flush in the morning

LakieLady · 18/04/2020 07:24

@indemMUND I can't believe your LL is refusing to get your toilet fixed!

I'd be speaking to environmental health about it if I was in your shoes. I'm bloody sure that would be classed as an essential repair.

BlueJava · 18/04/2020 07:26

Always flush! I would find it disgusting to come across that!

ElsieDear · 18/04/2020 07:27

What a waste of water to flush at night after a wee!! YYABU

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/04/2020 07:30

Nope, we never flush at night.

LakieLady · 18/04/2020 07:32

How loud are people's toilets if the NEIGHOURS are woken up by it?? Just shut the lid/close the bathroom door

For a while, I lived in a purpose built flat in an 8-storey block. When anyone in any of the flats above flushed their bog, it sounded like it was in our flat. The soundproofing was non-existent, and where all the pipes were blocked in, I swear it worked like a speaker cabinet and didn't deaden the noise at all.

If you were in the bathroom when someone above had a shit, you could hear the splash when the turd hit the water and if they farted, you could hear it as well as if they were standing next to you.

I moved out at the end of the tenancy, I couldn't bear it.

Therabble · 18/04/2020 07:34

Just wait until the next crisis is a water shortage, OP. Then you'll pretty quickly realise how much water is wasted by constantly flushing!

verybritishproblems · 18/04/2020 07:37

Gosh if your wee smells that much you need to drink more water!

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/04/2020 08:06

Stained and stinking loos are not for us If your wee is so dark it's staining the toilet and stinks then you have a medical condition. Please phone the GP!

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/04/2020 08:07

Or drink a hell of a lot more!

KatherineJaneway · 18/04/2020 08:34

And it really does smell.

It really doesn't.

catwithnohat · 18/04/2020 08:38

Always flush for simple hygiene and smell.

Can't stand the stink of piss that's been sitting from overnight. Yuk!

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/04/2020 08:43

Those of you saying it doesn’t smell just don’t smell the urine because you’re used to it so you’re desensitised. It’s no different from dog owners claiming their house doesn’t smell of dog....it does they just can’t smell it.

Iwantacookie · 18/04/2020 08:47

Depends on the situation. If its middle of the night no just in case it wakes someone.
However if I'm staying awake I'll use the downstairs toilet and flush everytime.

forsucksfake · 18/04/2020 09:03

This is why I never stay in other people's homes. Too many weird/strange/disgusting rules that come as unpleasant surprises. That could be a thread in itself, I suppose.

To all the non-flushers, visitors to your house can smell the piss, no matter how well hydrated you are, for God's sake.

Do you also save water by not washing your hands with soap after you urinate?

Crystal87 · 18/04/2020 09:04

Wee does smell if it's left overnight, especially if it's the accumulation of a few people's. Eventually the smell will start to build up even after it's flushed and you'll be left with a stinking toilet.

JungleGiraffe · 18/04/2020 09:07

I'm jealous of the people saying they don't wake up needing to pee in the night
