Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

I only flush overnight if it's a poo. If it's just a wee I leave it. I'm usually first up anyway so I flush it then. I don't want to make too much noise and wake DS up especially as he's moving to the room next to the loo soon. I don't turn the light on either as it wakes me up too much and I can't get back to sleep easily. There's enough light from the window to pee and wash hands by.

This thread has been must illuminating. I can't believe how many people find a bit of wee disgusting.

We will generally go 2-3 wees before flushing throughout the day. Always have done. It doesn't smell. I know that doesn't smell because I can smell wee that has been trapped in the toddler seat we still have in one loo so that gets a good clean every day.

If we had people staying we would flush every time. It's one of those things that's fine wothinntje family but we would change routine for guests

I quite often shout out "don't flush I need to go to" if someone's just been so as not to waste a flush!

professorbean · 18/04/2020 11:03

*Those not flushing during the day is a bit rank. I know not in current times but what if family or friends popped round and needed the loo. Would you have to run upstairs to clean it?
*
Who "pops" round in this day and age?

professorbean · 18/04/2020 11:04

I find it weird that you change your children's nappies and wipe their bums and have sex with your partners but find their urine "revolting".

Greenpop21 · 18/04/2020 11:05

Good one @professorbean

I don't keep dirty nappies lying around, do you? There's a very good reason why nappy bins have been invented Grin

OneandTwenty · 18/04/2020 11:10

I seem to have the opposite problem than so many posters, it's a battle to teach young children to flush every time they go to the loo. Battle I win eventually, but still.

Mustbethewine · 18/04/2020 11:14

No one in our home flushes their wee during sleeping hours.

sugarbum · 18/04/2020 11:19

Nobody in our house does poos overnight.
If they did, they would flush.
As far as I'm concerned, no-one needs to flush wee during the night. Its just not necessary. And it shouldn't smell bad unless people are dehydrated.
I also tell the kids that we don't need to flush wee every time during the day, unless, like above, its bright yellow, in which case we have an issue and they need to drink more water. Or if we have visitors. Then its polite to flush.
Not the same outside the home of course.

Ittakesthree · 18/04/2020 13:07

For everyone saying about the cost do you know how much a flush costs? I've never had a water meter we've always paid a flat rate one of the perks of living in the north east we have a massive reservoir supplying our water so we have an abundance and I pay the same each month no matter what I use so I've never thought of it in money or water saving terms (except for saving the planet of course) this has been really eye opening Grin

I'm STUNNED at the amount of people who don't flush bloody hell!!

That dull pissy smell of Parisian multi-storey carparks. Yuk.

We always always flush here. And if it wakes up a kid so what? Get them used to it and back to sleep, you can't not flush in case it wakes them up - kids need to be able to sleep through normal household noises otherwise you are scared to even sneeze?! Nah not me. Flush flush flush.

EngagedAgain · 18/04/2020 13:24

Those of you who keep flushing willy nilly, all I can say is you must have money to burn! Or rather throw down the drain!

Sonichu · 18/04/2020 13:26

"For everyone saying about the cost do you know how much a flush costs"

No separate water bills here so I'll keep on flushing at no extra cost. I can't believe people on MN think toilet brushes are the devil's work but are content to let their piss ferment over night.

happymummy12345 · 18/04/2020 13:29

We always flush

EngagedAgain · 18/04/2020 13:32

I can just imagine some people saying (when confronted with a loo with wee in) 'what fresh hell is this'! 😂

HighlandYak · 18/04/2020 13:39

We go by the if it's yellow let it mellow approach day and night Grin less water into the septic tank.

Chinks123 · 18/04/2020 13:39

@cheeseandpickledonions You can’t always get a baby used to noises and simply ‘get them back to sleep.’ Both my children were raised the same around lots of household noise- dd can sleep through an earthquake, ds wakes at a pin drop. I wake up if someone farted three streets away, I can’t help it we’re light sleepers, and no amount of flushing toilets will get us used to it.

And if your piss smells like a Parisian car park I’d go see your go, or drink more water?

Chinks123 · 18/04/2020 13:40

GP

SimonJT · 18/04/2020 13:42

@professorbean Having sex with my partner doesn’t him urinating on me, changing a nappy is disgusting, but you can’t just leave it, just like urine shouldn’t be left in the toilet.

PigletJohn · 18/04/2020 13:44

Neither an extractor fan nor a cistern need be noisy.

DollyDoneMore · 18/04/2020 13:46

It apparently costs 2-3p to flush the loo, if you’re on a water meter.

couchlover · 18/04/2020 13:47

We don't flush on a night as the flush disturbs others sleeping.

JustStayHome · 18/04/2020 13:48

Are people's urine that strong?

That it smells awful?
Leaves stains?

What are you all drinking???

scaryreading · 18/04/2020 13:48

Yes no flushing as it disturbs others

KatherineJaneway · 18/04/2020 14:00

Same questions I have. Unbelieveable.
