To want to change my name...

TheLadyAnneNeville · 16/04/2020 15:10

So, not THAT important considering what’s happening in the world...

I am 58yrs old. I detest my name which is a very 60’s “modern” name. Not Debbie/Sharon/Julie/Michelle but, along those lines. When my older sister was born, my Mum called her XXXXX. Ten days later, she changed her mind and called my sister YYYYY. Skip 2 yrs and I was born. Now, my mum was really I’ll when I was born and because my auntie and uncle had no children of their own, I was to be looked after, by them. They were a wonderful couple and it was a lot more complicated than I can go into here. So, in my mum’s absence, my auntie named me XXXXX.

I lived with my Nanna (until she died) and then my auntie and uncle (and was much loved) but eventually, as a toddler, went back to my parents (I was a difficult child, apparently). Now, I DETEST this “secondhand” name. In and off, all my life, I’ve wanted to change it.

Would I be ridiculous to try to do so now? Everyone knows me as XXXXX so on a practical level, I feel it’s impossible. To add insult to injury, when my sister was given a different name YYYYY, my auntie who loved the name XXXXX got a dog and called it XXXXX 🙄. So, not only is my name second hand but I’m named after a sodding dog!

What would you do? We had some pretty names in our family too...Eleanor, Emily, Mathilda and Constance and I ended up with XXXXX.

ooh. deffo an Eleanor. I can see that.

people always think i am called Rebecca, I like the name Rebecca (or at least i do not dislike it) but i am not rebecca. I am not even anything like it.

I have a unisex name.

GreenTeaMug · 17/04/2020 19:00

When I hear Eleanor i see 'Eleanor of Aquitaine' and I think you defintiely look more regal than what 'wendy' brings up.

GreenTeaMug · 17/04/2020 19:01

And I think (FWIW) that you are definitely an 'Eleanor' rather than an 'Ellie'.

lmcneil003 · 17/04/2020 19:04

Please let us help you choose the new name. I suggest Esmeralda or Bunnykins (Esme & Bunny) are the short versions.

MinistryOfTragic · 17/04/2020 19:06

Life is too short to be unhappy. I agree with PP, if you hate it change it and never look back. Be happy. ❤️

SunshineCake · 17/04/2020 19:10

I think because of how things are you should change your name. It will change your life and it will be you choosing too and not just letting corona dictate your life because a virus is more globally more important than your name but you are you globally and should be called wtf you want.

GreenTeaMug · 17/04/2020 19:11

Could you also show a pic of your Aunt Eleanor's ring?

i adore bling and that is a lovely story. :)

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 19:15

The ring is a simple band in 24ct gold. No “bling” I’m afraid.

GreenTeaMug · 17/04/2020 19:16

it souinds very elegant.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 19:20

@Biber, I like your story. Good that your husband supports you.

If I changed it, I wouldn’t then shorten it.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 19:21

@GreenTeaMug ... regal. Yeah, that’s me all over! 😂😂😂

Ginger1982 · 17/04/2020 19:26

As an aside, you don't look 58!!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 19:27

Well, as I said, I looked for good shots 😊. Didn’t want to be a wizened old Wendy!

My mum has a 60's first and middle name;she hates them both and it's a bit a of a mouthful.

Her mum said she was considering the name Jennifer for my mum which is preferable to what she was named. My mum doesn't even like the common shortening of her name. We've Managed to come up a version of her name she does like so she uses that.

Lots of women my mums age seem to called things like Deborah,Karen,Sandra,Joanne,Brenda,Susan,Theresa,Patricia,Sarah etc

popsydoodle4444 · 17/04/2020 19:34

@TheLadyAnneNeville

I like the name Wendy. Its my daughters middle name

londonbrick · 17/04/2020 19:35

I changed mine about 5 years ago - everyone says how nice it is whereas with my old name no one said that. I'm probably a slightly different person and I still have a smile inside that shines every time someone speaks to me using it.

Change it & step forward into the new lovely you.

SunshineCake · 17/04/2020 19:36

Just seen your photo and you look like JK Rowling

SunshineCake · 17/04/2020 19:37

Then the black and white one completely different. If I squint Gaby Logan but I don't like her so don't chose Gaby Grin.

bumblebeefairy · 17/04/2020 19:47

Absolutely do it. Life is far, far too short. You could always keep your current name as a middle name.

bumblebeefairy · 17/04/2020 19:49

I agree, you look like an Eleanor (and no way your age!)

Sleepingboy · 17/04/2020 19:49

My first thought when you said your name was why dont you change it to Dee? So it is easy to say to new my people my name is wendy but call me Dee, and to people who know you already you say please call me Dee in future. And they'll get it as it is a nickname from Wendy...but sufficiently different for you for it to be different?

You mention you dont want to be called wendy cos it was a second name and after someone else but then you say Eleanor which is second after your aunt. Keep your identity as you have grown up Wendy, but make it new and yours by changing it to Dee.

What do you think?

TheLadyAnneNeville · 17/04/2020 19:52

J K Rowling, huh? I can see that actually. People always used to tell me I looked like the barmaid in Coronation Street. I can’t remember her name though. @londonbrick... I like that, that it makes you smile.

I’m just a bit nervous as someone upthread mentioned that a big part of my “ness” is Wendy and so the “Wendyness” will be gone.

OP posts:
Sleepingboy · 17/04/2020 19:52

Just seen your pics. You def suit DEE!!!

GreenTulips · 17/04/2020 19:55

You are definitely more Elenor than Wendy!!

What was she thinking?

YoungBritishPissArtist · 17/04/2020 20:04

I really like the name Wendy 😊 I went to school with a really nice one with gorgeous red hair, she’d be 40 now.

It’s strange, I don’t like my name - it’s peak 70s/80s and you couldn’t imagine a baby being named it now - but I can’t imagine being called anything else!
