Has anyone noticed helicopters in their area? We have them now day and night - some so low it scared the pets and kids. Some black some yellow some grey. Is this just my area? We all feel unnerved by it a bit Confused

How weird, my son mentioned about hearing helicopters again late last night.
Thinking about it, he's right I have been hearing them quite a lot.
Maybe air ambulances?

carolebaskinsheadband · 16/04/2020 05:29

Strange, we live very remotely, surrounded by horses and farms but we've certainly noticed an increase in helicopters.

Qgardens · 16/04/2020 05:31

I've noticed more chanook ones but not normal ones.

Lalala205 · 16/04/2020 05:34

Possibly police helicopters you're noticing more due to less traffic on the roads currently? I'd imagine they're possibly getting utilised more now as there's less major call outs with the lockdown and they can cover a wider ariel area than deploying squad cars? Additionally local police force numbers will have dwindled in their own right as some beat police will be shielding due to either their own health conditions/vulnerable family members/reducing general numbers in the stations?

Yes, circling though so noticeable several over the last week.
Central Scotland if it helps.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 05:42

Central Scotland here. I live near an airport and I am very familiar with the aircraft and I know this is unusual. These helicopters are circling our area, some in the day some in the middle of the night. Friends and family have started to video them as we all feel it’s very odd. The house vibrated yesterday as a large all black helicopter was so low I’ve never seen anything like it. I caught it on video but don’t want to post online I feel a bit freaked out!

We have a lot of military aircraft lately. A really unusual amount.

BrooHaHa · 16/04/2020 05:48

Saw one yesterday. Just one though. Didn't think much of it.

catfeets · 16/04/2020 05:51

Am hearing a lot but haven't actually seen them. My neighbour says they're army helicopters so maybe she's seen them. Also hearing a lot of planes.
We're not near an airport or base so no reason for the increased helicopters.

bettybattenburg · 16/04/2020 05:54

Not near here , no. The helicopters you see are usually police and air ambulance ones. As for military planes, they are doing exercises using civilian airports not normally available to them.

RandomSelection · 16/04/2020 05:54

They are probably doing a sweep on the public areas to see if there are large gatherings. If any are spotted the police can be sent. Much more efficient than the cars driving up and down.

Puddlelane123 · 16/04/2020 05:56

Are they maintaining their flying hours perhaps?

stellabelle · 16/04/2020 05:57

It's easy to identify them. Just get the app Flight Radar 24, you can point at the sky and it instantly tells you what the aircraft is, and it's place of take off and destination. You can also watch every plane in the world on a big map. It's very addictive !

bettybattenburg · 16/04/2020 05:58

Though the police and military don't usually appear on flight radar, you need a different app for those.

Fredthefrog · 16/04/2020 06:05

Could it be to do with the military being part of PPE distribution?

Millie2013 · 16/04/2020 06:11

We’ve had a few near here (we’re on the edge of a country park, so I assume they’re looking for gatherings of people)

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 16/04/2020 06:13

Military transporting a lot of medical stuff around the country at the moment.

Knocksomesense · 16/04/2020 06:13

We are near a military base. We are also getting/have 2 new hospitals, a triage centre and a testing centre. So I assumed it was to do with supplies

speakout · 16/04/2020 06:14

I have noticed far fewer than usual.
We norally have a couple a week, usualy miletary or commercial, sometimes police.
I haven't seen a single helicopter for aroun 6 weeks.

devildeepbluesea · 16/04/2020 06:14

We've seen a few but I wonder if they're just so much more noticeable as all other air traffic has virtually ceased.

pocketem · 16/04/2020 06:16

Military transport for hospital equipment and supplies

BenWyatt · 16/04/2020 06:17

None at all and we’re near an raf base.

cricketmum84 · 16/04/2020 06:19

We are hearing them a couple times a day, more on a weekend which is unusual for here. I think they are out scanning for groups of people congregating.

FoolsAssassin · 16/04/2020 06:20

One has just gone over and woken me up.

SilverDragonfly1 · 16/04/2020 06:21

Fewer here. Greater London and we usually have a police helicopter once a week or more as we live near a couple of dodgy areas. Only heard one twice since the lockdown, although they are much more noticeable with the lack of other traffic noise.
