Has anyone noticed helicopters in their area? We have them now day and night - some so low it scared the pets and kids. Some black some yellow some grey. Is this just my area? We all feel unnerved by it a bit Confused

@frillyfarmer I'm in Notts.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 16/04/2020 07:25

If they are flying at night it could be

A report of an outdoor party
Keeping their night flying hours up
Air ambulance
Air support for crime
Transporting of items.

These people dont only work during the day.

Why would a helicopter be watching someone in particular?

Egghead68 · 16/04/2020 07:28

Yes helicopters every afternoon. I assumed it was the press or police monitoring public gatherings.

Cosmos45 · 16/04/2020 07:30

I work from home in a rural location so tend to notice what’s going on during the day and last week had a hovering helicopter which seemed to be over the field behind my house. It was so obvious that a few people in the neighbouring village texted me. Same thing happened yesterday.. hovered for about 10 mins then flew off.. it was quite unnerving but I’m not sure why. It didn’t look like an air ambulance but was a dark grey or black colour.

acacac · 16/04/2020 07:32

Where I live it’s unusual not to hear helicopters all day every day and very very noticeable when they are not flying.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 07:33

These suggestions are totally plausible in most cases. The videos I managed to catch involve helicopters circling the area seemingly for no reason at all. Can anyone offer a reason why a helicopter would be extremely low in a housing estate?

Crime prevention.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 07:34

Cosmos45 that sounds very very similar to my experience on Monday

You are hearing them because there is less of the usual noise of traffic, trains and aircraft. Helicopters are used regularly in Scotland to bring patients from remote areas to main cities for hospital treatment - that's not changed and it's not Covid patients either. We see the police helicopter regularly and yes it flies low at times.

There is no conspiracy here.

chockaholic72 · 16/04/2020 07:55

We’ve had a few military using the open air space and to do practice stuff at Manchester Airport and at Barton, plus flying up and down the railway lines to catch school kids trespassing and people nicking copper wire - they do that sort of thing a lot. We’ve also had them round the M60 and a couple of link roads due to people using them like Brands Hatch - there have been a couple of high speed crashes lately.

Nazis

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/04/2020 08:02

We have them overhead maybe one or two nights a week. It's a bit of a hotspot for cannabis farms so I think they are checking heat sensors for people's attics Grin

Shitsgettingcrazy · 16/04/2020 08:02

Because that's what they do. When they are looking for someone on the report of a crime, they circle estates, woodland, open fields etc.

They often go up, when there are reports of someone potential growing weed in their attics. They have cameras that can spot the heat signature. I used to work for british gas. Part of my job was looking into accounts that had a huge spike or ongoing high usage of gas and electric and liase with the police.

If they are getting flying hours up, they will also be doing the same as they would do when out.

You seem to only want people to tell you, yes they are looking for you in particular. Despite the fact that they would know tour address and just come to the house if they wanted to speak to you.

Paranoia is not a good sign op.

Surely you can realise no one is going to spend a fortune, monitoring you personally.

StrongTea · 16/04/2020 08:06

If they are checking the pylons near us they are really low but usually follow the lines of the pylons. Not circling, but often fly back the way they came. On that nextdoor site think it was assumed looking for gatherings. Few robberies as well in grangemouth, van, tools etc within last week. We are on a main road and while traffic is a wee bit less there is still traffic during the night.

SarahInAccounts · 16/04/2020 08:08

I live in Warwickshire - the centre of England. Yet yesterday navy helicopters were flying over.

emmathedilemma · 16/04/2020 08:08

I've seen or heard one a couple of times but that's nothing unusual where I live, it was probably the police one. There was a small aircraft flew over low yesterday afternoon, I could hear it but didn't see it.

emmathedilemma · 16/04/2020 08:09

I think the police one is usually chasing stolen cars or motorbikes.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/04/2020 08:16

Not in the past week or so, but there were helicopters earlier in the lockdown. We have a huge park very close so assumed they were checking on groups/gatherings.

ChristmasCarcass · 16/04/2020 08:17

They have started to hover over our park, presumably looking for illicit sunbathers Confused

Morgan12 · 16/04/2020 08:18

Yes. Also central Scotland!

Weird.

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/04/2020 08:19

No. Less if anything.
We normally get lots of military helicopters (and other planes, a Vulcan went over a few months ago), air ambulance and sea rescue but very little recently.

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/04/2020 08:19

Yes we’ve had a few.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 08:20

Shitsgettingcrazy .... I haven’t implied there is a conspiracy theory where helicopters are chasing me ... I felt a bit like “us” was the public in general

You don’t know me so fair enough but I am not a conspiracy theorist! I am pleased to see a variety of explanations but the point I am making is that I don’t buy that I am suddenly aware of helicopters that have been doing this regularly anyway

OP posts:
Notso · 16/04/2020 08:21

No I've noticed the opposite. We used to see them a few times a week but haven't seen one for ages.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 08:22

I have lived here for 20 years I am very aware of the sounds and habits of all kinds of aircraft. Which is why my initial thought was that the increase in activity had to do with the current pandemic. However, the change in behaviour of the helicopters seems unwarranted, flying so frequently, so low to houses. I am in a very dull, boring estate I would be surprised if there were cannabis factories hiding nearby but you never know! Grin
