Has anyone noticed helicopters in their area? We have them now day and night - some so low it scared the pets and kids. Some black some yellow some grey. Is this just my area? We all feel unnerved by it a bit Confused

We're Warwickshire and there have been many more over the last fortnight - possibly because there's reduced traffic so they're more noticeable, but partly just there's been more around. We're near to a local beauty spot and there have been plenty of bellends gathering and treating it like a jolly, so I'm sure some are on the lookout for those people.

We got very excited seeing a grey RAF plane go over yesterday - it was the first plane any of us had seen in a while (DH and DS14 are plane lovers so it was like balm on their souls I think). Everything is much quieter here throughout the day - it'll be odd going back to normal once quarantine begins to end.

My friend is convinced that there is a weird smell in the air after the helicopter has been.
She’s really into conspiracy theories at the minute and is convinced they’re pumping something into the air Confused
So, there you are.

Horsemad · 16/04/2020 08:25

Can't say I've noticed any helicopters, just the usual jets (Eurofighter).

Dylaninthemovies1 · 16/04/2020 08:25

My mums in Glasgow and told me she was hearing a lot more helicopter noise.

Usually she hears a lot of plane noise from planes going to /from Glasgow airport, but this has quietened down

AmputatedSoul · 16/04/2020 08:26

I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this has already been said but my BIL is in the army and they've been having lots of training involving aircraft and helicopters over the last couple of weeks.
Flying all over the country in them though I don't know why.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 08:26

Quite a lot of “yes” from Scottish posters? Could this be a thing the Scottish govt have initiated? I’m bored and quite interested now Grin

Not here in Wales I haven't. Just the usual stuff - we had the yellow ones checking pylons yesterday.

Interesting that a lot of Scottish posters have said they've noticed the same. You have to report back if you find out why they're there!

leckford · 16/04/2020 08:29

We get a lot around here normally as there are many military bases around Salisbury plain and they do training runs. The huge ones are Chinooks which fly low, we also get the small lei outer gunships. The yellow and green are air ambulances.

They could be moving patients around or troops involved in driving ambulances.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 08:30

Helicopters usual for the area are yellow or light grey in colour and have a lighter sounding whirr, they are always distant however the ones we are seeing more of are black or dark and have a really deep loud noise, they are also flying closely to the houses and what seems in circles, anyone who knows about helicopters can identify what type these might be? I guess a lot of people saying army/police but even that as fact is a bit odd to be the new norm. This whole thing right now is very surreal.

woollylizard · 16/04/2020 08:30

Yep, they're watching for gatherings here so they can send ground units to break them up

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 08:31

Sorry cross posted! Thanks leckford

There's a link on the gov.uk website where you can get in touch with the mod to find out about low flying aircraft in your area. I don't know how to do proper clicky links but it's www.gov.uk/low-flying-in-your-area

foamrolling · 16/04/2020 08:33

Oh I did do a clicky link. Get me.

SpratsOnParade · 16/04/2020 08:34

I'm just outside of Glasgow and normally see and hear them regularly and I haven't seen one for a few weeks now.

recededpronunciation · 16/04/2020 08:34

Yellow ones near us are the electricity company doing line surveys. They fly pretty low. Have seen the police and air ambulance out a bit but not massively more than normal.

Serin · 16/04/2020 08:34

We live under a flight path and are quite good at using flight radar to track unusual aircraft.
A plane was doing loops around our area for ages last week, we looked at flight radar and it belonged to a "mapping" company. Maybe now is a good time to do non essential mapping as there are less other planes about.
Also the military chinooks are back and forth all day delivering supplies and personnel and unusually we have seen attack helicopters. I guess now is a good gome to do training with it being so quiet up there.

GreyishDays · 16/04/2020 08:35

I’m in Edinburgh and have only seen two in the last month.

Isadora2007 · 16/04/2020 08:35

Easy coast scotland here and none.

Northernwarrior · 16/04/2020 08:35

I was having a look of flight radar and noticed helicopters for the first time. Although I assume this is because there are less planes.

sobeyondthehills · 16/04/2020 08:36

We are getting a lot of helicopters late at night, but over the last few days I have noticed an increase of small, maybe private, planes taking off

TARSCOUT · 16/04/2020 08:36

Central scotland here. No, haven't heard any.

Oldraver · 16/04/2020 08:37

I'm next to the biggest RAF base so helicopters overhead oat got the course

We do sometimes have the police helicopter when it's looking for someone but not seen it in a while

If you look on Freedar UK it will show up police and mist military planes, though we had an army helicopter the other day that didn't show up

SuperficialSuzie · 16/04/2020 08:38

The website

www.freedar.uk/

Shows military and police air craft too. Prepare to lose a couple of hours a day checking out what is in the sky.

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 08:39

Makes sense for helicopter “practise” to happen while the skies are clear. Also must be at least some accounted for by sending supplies and checking pylons etc. But there are still a few occasions I just can’t explain away. The circling round could be practise I guess.

Feels intrusive. I assume it’s necessary for some reason though.
