Has anyone noticed helicopters in their area? We have them now day and night - some so low it scared the pets and kids. Some black some yellow some grey. Is this just my area? We all feel unnerved by it a bit Confused

In case you haven't guessed that thumping sound you hear is me banging my head against the wall..

So not a Chinook then! Grin

You have more patience than I do @notimagain

Sassenach85 · 18/04/2020 12:23

I have accepted the sensible explanations ... it is just a source of interest for some, no need for anyone to cause themselves a concussion Hmm

(I’m not in a place with D so not same lol Smile)

Thanks 🤣I've now just lost 2 hours to Flight radar! Why are there small private looking jets over Scotland... 🤔

Fearofawelshplanet · 18/04/2020 22:14

Well we just had one over our house with a big spot light shining down, trying to catch joyriders I expect.

Sugartitss · 18/04/2020 22:39

I’m in Dublin and we are seeing this every day, several times in fact. ALmostcevery morning at approximately 3:30 there is also a small plane that just circles. Has a green light, never seen that before. The helicopters are sometimes army and sometimes Garda (Police). I’m also very close to Dublin airport.

Wauden · 18/04/2020 23:23

Yes. Previously when I saw them they hovered above the local trouble spots, so you could guess where a crime was, but not now.
Saw my first chinook helicopter; it seemed huge and very noisy.

Wauden · 18/04/2020 23:46

Just went on to the plane following site. There's a plane flying from Stanstead to Memphis, but why?!? A sudden need to see Elvis' house during lock down?

BeingLonely · 18/04/2020 23:52

For the people in central Scotland majority of the helicopters are ghost army ones that are helping with the secc becoming the nhs Louisa Jordan. It’s a mix of staff and supplies

I'd put money on it being a freighter..Stansted is a major freight handling airport and Memphis is a massive ( and I mean massive) Fedex Hub..

Go to Memphis on your plane finder app and have a look at the number of aircraft heading into and out of there, and look at how many of them are Fedex.

We have always had lots of police helicopters as we are inner city. The one thing that did make me sit up and take notice was a plane that flew over. Not seen one of those for ages!

juls1888 · 19/04/2020 10:41

There's another one at ours right now really loud and not showing on Flight Radar 🤔

notimagain · 19/04/2020 11:42

There's another one at ours right now really loud and not showing on Flight Radar

  1. For various reasons Flight radar doesn't have worldwide coverage from ground level upwards, so aircraft you can see out of the window may not be displayed on Flightradar.
  1. Not all aircraft/operators choose to make their aircraft visible on these apps.
Wauden · 19/04/2020 15:37

There's a flight from Shanghai about to land at Heathrow. I wonder what that's about.

Jbck · 19/04/2020 17:27

Red and black helicopter just flew over not appearing on any apps. Is there a criterion they need to fulfil to be displayed? Theres an air ambulance showing closeish but definitely not it.

Jbck · 19/04/2020 17:28

Oops should have read today’s earlier posts ☺️.

Airline?

Anyhow standard "what's it about" these days is that if it's Virgin/BA and it's a passenger type such as a 777 or a 787 it will be actually carrying few/zero passengers and instead bringing in lots (as in tens of tonnes) of essential freight (typically medical stuff, drugs, PPE etc) rather than passengers.

Lots of that going on at the moment into the UK.

I0NA · 19/04/2020 22:08

YY a charter flight arrived yesterday at our local airport bringing PPE and medical equipment from China

notimagain · 19/04/2020 22:56

I do apologise a thousand times for the source but the link below gives a decent description of what "is going on" with these passenger aircraft arriving into the UK that are actually operating as temporary freighters:

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 19/04/2020 23:08

Our police helicopter is checking out parks for groups - it’s been circling the large parks near us every couple of days.crimes down so they don’t need to be chasing twats in stolen cars.

Also love flight tracker apps as we live near an airport and can lie in the garden shouting “bastards” at people going to nice places😊.
Wonder if it will show the details of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse as they ride overhead any day now lol

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 19/04/2020 23:10

Yep, 2 to 3 times a day. Always very low. We have a large riverside rec & think they may be checking there aren't groups gathering.

Wauden · 20/04/2020 10:57

@notimagain. Thanks for the information! It makes me feel a little bit connected to things as I am unwell. It makes things seem real. Whatever eality is, these days!

Sassenach85 · 20/04/2020 12:47

Saw a long thin white one today quite low, not on the tracker app. It’s funny how in a matter of weeks it’s has become a novelty to see aircraft in the sky!
