To ask if you've treated yourself to something as a pick me up right now, and what it is

So We're all stuck in as we know. I have a newborn and a 2.5yo, and DH wfh so most of my day is chaos with one millisecond of the day to myself. Oh and its my birthday this week (woooo).
I've not spent any money of late as DH does our food shop (I cover all bills and budgeted some spending money for mat leave). I am still in mat clothes thanks to not being able to get new ones I can fit in but I am comfy and reluctant to have to return items. I am generally not someone that spends money on myself, it mostly goes on the kids.

But like most, I am low and anxious, and want to 'treat' myself but no idea where to start in the current climate.

So has anyone treated themselves and if so what, why and did it work??

I’ve been buying myself books from various independent bookshops who really need the business just now.

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 16:13

@Vellichor, can you recommend any bookshops, please? I've checked a few of my usual favourites but they just seem to be closed, with no apparent mail-order offering Sad I use Wordery a lot and have a massive wishlist with them, but every single thing on it is currently out of stock! (Just as well for my bank balance, really: I've bought loads of books already during lockdown!)

I just bought a rather nice toaster. I’m fed up of either having to hover over the toaster awaiting smoke signals and manually pop it or have black toast (lowest setting). Also having to squish your bagels before cramming them into the machine.

My family will not being permitted to touch my new toaster.

It’s a 4 slicer. I’ve never owned a 4 slicer. I’m very excited. They had a 6 slicer but there’s only 3 of us.

Hoghgyni · 02/05/2020 17:25

everythingisginandroses the bookshop you need is the Big Green Bookshop. Have a look at @biggreenbookshop on Twitter. Simon is great. He might not have what you need in stock, but he can usually get it.

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 17:34

Thank you, @Hoghgyni - I will check it out!

Vellichor · 02/05/2020 20:03

@everythingisginandroses Well I try to buy from ones that are local to me or that I like to visit as I want them to survive this. The big green bookshop mentioned above is great, I follow them on Twitter/Facebook too. There is a bookshop called The Old Bank Bookshop in Wigtown in Scotland (Scotland’s book town) that is doing a great deal at the moment on random boxes of books. If you have a look on their Facebook page you will see more about it. I also love Daunt books and Pages of Hackney, both in London. They have some really interesting books. They both post a lot on social media too.

Vellichor · 02/05/2020 20:05

@everythingisginandroses Blackwells are posting things out quickly at the moment and usually have most things. They have a sale on at the moment and free delivery too. Their website is great. They are a chain but a good one.

Vellichor · 02/05/2020 20:07

@everythingisginandroses Sorry for the multiple posts..! Meant to say, websites abebooks or biblio have new and second hand listings from lots of bookshops and you can really find nearly anything.

Hoghgyni · 02/05/2020 20:10

Apologies @Biggreenbooks is the correct Twitter thingy.

CuppaZa · 02/05/2020 20:11

I’ve bought myself a bath pillow. Heaven

Bridecilla · 02/05/2020 20:19

@CuppaZa is it thick? Our bath is deep and long. Should be heaven but I'm too short so can't lie down without slipping under

CuppaZa · 02/05/2020 21:03

@Bridecilla, no not really, it probably wouldn’t make much difference to slipping under if you want to lay down.

Here’s the one I got Lamar Grey Bath Pillow

CuppaZa · 02/05/2020 21:04

It’s not showing up as a link, but it’s from Wayfair, the Lamar pillow

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 21:53

Thank you, @Vellichor {smile] I will have a look at all of these - the Wigtown bookshop is the one with the grumpy bookseller who wrote a memoir (Sean Bithell?), is that right? I had somehow forgotten about Blackwells, will head to their sale.

winterisstillcoming · 02/05/2020 22:14

My dyson air wrap has arrived! Had a quick try of it and loved it!

Also some spandex leggings, a top and some tights. The leggings and top might not make the cut into the wardrobe. I'm determined to be extra picky about my clothes.

Vellichor · 02/05/2020 23:16

@everythingisginandroses Yes the Wigtown Bookshop is the one in the diary of a bookseller and confessions of a bookseller by Shaun Bythell. The Old Bank Bookshop is another bookshop in the area. Shaun Bythell does a live Facebook video at 5pm every day at the moment, I like seeing inside the bookshop!
I think a lot of the Blackwells stock comes from their big shop in Oxford. I’ve never been but would love to visit, looks brilliant.

Russellbrandshair · 02/05/2020 23:18

A Jimmy Choo python bag - can’t afford it but too late now!

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 03/05/2020 07:21

We’ve used Blackwells a lot recently and they have been extremely slow. DAUNT books, who have a limited collection of new literary fiction and travel books, were very fast.

Vellichor · 03/05/2020 09:14

@FiddlefigOnTheRoof Oh that’s a shame. They say on their website that there might be a delay but I thought the books I ordered from them came as fast as ever.
I have received some beautiful copies of books from Daunt books recently, lovely covers on the books they publish.

Destinysdaughter · 03/05/2020 09:22

I bought a second hand copy of this book, love visual illusions and there's lots of pictures in it!

Destinysdaughter · 03/05/2020 09:26

Oh and yesterday I ordered some ghee. I'm going to have a go at making parathas! Determined to improve my cooking skills during lockdown.

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 03/05/2020 09:32

I ordered a load of lush stuff last week and it arrived yesterday. £50 well spent.

GreytExpectations · 03/05/2020 09:39

Wow, people's pick me ups seem to cost hundreds of £££ lucky you all having so much spare income when a lot of us are worried about money and losing our jobs during this. Anyways, my pick me up is a takeaway pizza, not some expensive trackies or PJs Hmm

Lordfrontpaw · 03/05/2020 09:50

I’m happy with a jar of my favourite pickle. Or some cheese.

MagnificentMillie · 03/05/2020 10:25

This is a nice cheerful thread, I got some new white company bedding last week and some birthday decorations from Etsy which are handmade.
