Couple doing the tango in finsbury park

I'm staying in. My family are staying in and elderly relatives really suffering with depression and loneliness but still following guidelines. I'm exercising by walking the dog early morning around the block. I.e streets close to my house. I don't need a park or a beach. I certainly dont need to dance the tango in finsbury park. AIBU to be disgusted in people and their clear disregard for others safety. I cant believe their behaviour.

It's fine. They're excerising and nowhere near people. Why are you trying to dictate which type of excerise is allowed?! If I wanted to pogo stick around my block then I'd bloody well do it!

*can’t

TheClitterati · 13/04/2020 10:09

Gee the fun police are out in force aren't they!

Social restrictions & social isolation does not mean no fun allowed.

MouthBreathingRage · 13/04/2020 10:11

and therefore are stupid horrible people who we disapprove of.

I dont remember using the words 'stupid and horrible' to describe these people. 'Show-off' doesn't need a qualifier. Stop adding in negatives and insults that were never said just because you've decided to join in a frothy pile on. A difference of opinion is not a 'toxic attitude' either.

MouthBreathingRage · 13/04/2020 10:13

Fun police, misery guys, fun sponge. Many an MN poster needs to buy a thesaurus once the shops open again. At least be a little original in the playground name calling.

TheElementsOfMedical · 13/04/2020 10:15

@bridgetreilly love this story about a couple dressing up in historical re-enactment costumes for their daily promenade

Oh that's lovely! We've been fans of her YouTube channel (Prior Attire) for ages ever since my DDs wondered about how ladies in the olden days got dressed - she demonstrates proper historically accurate costume. I love the idea of them strolling around in public in their outfits.

Xenia · 13/04/2020 10:17

As I said above the Regulations are very clear - they mention exercise. Just because Boris J runs does not mean running is the only exercise. That couple probably live together and they are not near others so they are doing the right thing - exercising - it is those who are obese and never exercise who are making the NHS really strain at the seams. They are our poster people for this brave new world.

B1rdbra1n · 13/04/2020 10:18

Pogo stick
I've not seen any pogo sticks but there are a few amazing unicyclists around my way👏
the rollerbladers have also been abroad👏how I envy them😲 how I wish I could do it😲

TeaStory · 13/04/2020 10:18

@MouthBreathingRage someone on another thread called these people “morons”.

And yes, a lot of the attitude towards what counts as exercise IS toxic.

B1rdbra1n · 13/04/2020 10:20

As Xenia says, in many ways it is lack of exercise that got us into this mess we are all locked down and unable to do our favourite activities in part because people don't bother to look after their health

SquishySquirmy · 13/04/2020 10:26

Yes why can't they just walk round the block while lashing themselves with birch rods???!!? Do they not realise that dancing in view of others will destroy the NHS?? Dont they care that any attempt to do anything remotely joyful is KILLING people??
DIScUStING.

TeaStory · 13/04/2020 10:28

@MouthBreathingRage

And my post made use of hyperbole to make my point in a tongue-in-cheek way, like so many posts on this thread. I don’t know why I’m the only one getting called out for it...

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 13/04/2020 10:31

When I go for my daily exercise I do the following checks to make extra sure I'm not enjoying it:

  1. Always wear a hair shirt- scratchy and uncomfy- check
  2. Wear trainers one size too small- pinches my toes and gives me blisters- check
  3. Carry a gnarly stick- to beat myself with it in case I have an unconscious involuntary feeling of "fun"- check
  4. Bottle of water with vinegar added- just to make sure its not refreshing or enjoyable in any way- check
  5. No sunglasses in the bright sun- make sure my eyes are stinging and scorched- check
  6. Keep my head down at all times, dont nod, smile or acknowledge anyone in the vicinity - ensuring that no pleasantries are exchanged and certainly nothing that could be misconstrued as "fun" or enjoyment.
B1rdbra1n · 13/04/2020 10:37

Alexis I still think you're over indulging yourself with the trainers🤔 you ought to be barefoot or struggling to run in flip flops🤨

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 13/04/2020 10:38

@b1rdbra1n

hangs head in shame I will go barefoot next time. I really hope people are clearing up after their dogs......

B1rdbra1n · 13/04/2020 10:39

And stop it right now with the vinegar in water, you're getting a secret thrill out of the sour taste.
No refreshments 🤨
Anything that you drink might lead to more sweating and that will kill people 🤨

bengalcat · 13/04/2020 10:41

Splendid - must've been a lovely sight to watch for anyone else in their vicinity .

B1rdbra1n · 13/04/2020 10:41

well if you decide to indulge yourself by running at a time when other people have to let their dogs do their toilet in the outdoors....well it's just your bad luck if you step in dog poop🤨

MojoMoon · 13/04/2020 10:43

Mounted police are patrolling Finsbury Park and warning people to move on.

There is also a council van driving round and round blaring out a recorded message about social distancing.

It's very irritating (which is presumably the point)

If I'd seen a couple doing the tango while I was in the park, it would still have been considerably less irritating than the council van and the small children on scooters even if they were "showing off" or whatever they've been accused of.

For what it's worth, I saw only good social distancing in the park on Friday and there was room for everyone

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 13/04/2020 10:45

And stop it right now with the vinegar in water, you're getting a secret thrill out of the sour taste

DAMMIT! I just cant catch a break today. As soon as the police station opens tomorrow I will hand myself in.

In the meantime, I sentence myself to watch back to back episodes of loose women and David Dickenson's bargain hunt as a suitable "fun punishment"

Whattheother2catsprefer · 13/04/2020 10:48

Alexis did you forget the crown of thorns?

I mean do people not understand that God won't take the plague away until we are all properly miserable?

I was going to pop on my hair shirt grab a fail and get my daily exercise by going round the block on my knees wailing but then I remembered that I live in rural England not Manhattan so I don't have a block. I putted on a summer dress and sandals instead and had a lovely walk in woods with my DH and DC. I enjoyed the babbling of the brook, I smiled at the sunshine, I listened to birds and I said hello (at a safe distance) to the people we met on the way. It was glorious, and I will continue to do it until the rules say I can't.
(The actual rules not the some kill joy on the internet thinks rules).

CecilyP · 13/04/2020 10:50

As a dance, Tango involves a lot of walking. They are not covering much ground, Finsbury Park is probably the nearest from their home where they probably live together, so I think it’s fine as long as they don’t attract too much of an audience. I saw a couple playing volleyball on Friday in a children’s playground- not a single child there; the only other person was me walking through, so also fine.

Hannah021 · 13/04/2020 10:54

@MojoMoon if u witnessed anything, how do they handle kids kicking footballs around to each other? Or people exercising in a stand still place? I'v never been to the park, and wonder how they respond to stuff like that if they expect ppl to move on... (i'm sure we agree no sunbathing or picnics... But ppl exercising in a stand still position, i wonder)

Willow2017 · 13/04/2020 11:15

Good God OP get a grip.
Its not a misery competition just now.
You stick to being miserable and staying indoors 100% of the time and stoip trying to tell others what they can and cannot do.
Your 'understanding' of the guidelines is way off anywy so maybe look them up before going off on one?

One couple dancing for exercise (and maybe practicing for their actual job) isnt going to bring down the entire country. They arent anywhere near anyone else and if people are stupid enough to think that thats a cue to have mass dances thats down to them not this couple.

Sick to death of the competative misery on here just now. We can make the most of lockdown in many ways and exercise is one of them. It doenst have to be a route march round the block in 13.7888 minutes it can be anything thts not affecting anyone outside your family. Cycling, walking, dancing etc can be hobbies and exercise at once they are not mutually exclusive. If we banned 'hobbies' then half the country wouldnt be allowed out walking for exercise at all!
Common sense seeems to have left the building these days.

🚲Germany respects it's cyclists🚲
www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/13/pop-up-bike-lanes-help-with-coronavirus-social-distancing-in-germany
The coronavirus is showing us that clean air is an indispensable asset”, said DUH’s chair Jürgen Resch. “It is now especially important to temporarily make it more important for people to move safely on their bikes. This will help improve air quality, enables exercise in fresh air while keeping a safe distance and avoids unnecessary accidents.”🚲
