To think it's my bloody house and garden so I'll have a bbq or bonfire if i want too?

Just as the title suggests really.

We're already confined to our homes for the most part, why are people now trying to control what we can and cannot do in our own gardens?

Need to find as much joy as possible or I'll join all the other near alcoholics that have evolved at this point.

BBQ, yes. Bonfire? No. Be a little considerate, over the bank holiday weekend at least.

TurnOffTheTv · 09/04/2020 23:20

Nothing quite like your neighbour starting a bonfire so you can’t sit in your garden, and your washing stinks, and you can’t open your windows because of the smoke. Best just go out for the day eh? Oh, wait..

Boulshired · 09/04/2020 23:20

People who light bonfires are shits, it’s no problem for them just everyone downwind who gets the smoke.

TitianaTitsling · 09/04/2020 23:21

I don't quite get the BBQ/bonfire issue... Is it the gathering, but if it's immediate household thats ok is it not? Or is it the 'smoke/pollution' issue?

Notcontent · 09/04/2020 23:21

Bonfires should be banned completely. They are incredibly polluting. BBQs are ok if you use a proper BBQ and know how to use it. Last time my neighbour used one of those disposable BBQs I had to close all my windows as there was black smoke billowing into my house and I could hardly breathe.

HeddaGarbled · 09/04/2020 23:21

Depends on whether the smoke from your bbq/bonfire is causing problems for your neighbours. Of course you can enjoy yourself in your garden, but you should still be considerate to other people who are under exactly the same restrictions as you are.

makingmiracles · 09/04/2020 23:23

BBQ acceptable, bonfire, no. Have some consideration for people suffering from or trying to avoid a very nasty respiratory illness.

Plus many people are trying to save money as they’ve lost jobs/20% wages so are hanging washing out on lines to dry instead of tumble drying, I’d be well annoyed if some numpty decided to light a bonfire and all my washing stank of bonfire smoke.

Redcrayons · 09/04/2020 23:23

Bonfire might be a bit much, but there’s no reason you can’t have a BBQ, assuming you’re not having the rest of the street round.

PickAChew · 09/04/2020 23:24

Can you confine it to the boundary of that garden you own?

PepePig · 09/04/2020 23:24

I agree. Your garden, your rules. As long as it's within government guidance and council rules, of course.

People are bored and trying to micromanage everyone else so their ego feels better.

And for those saying "I have x condition that BBQ smoke makes worse", I'm sorry but one person doesn't trump another. One BBQ a month you'll just have to cope with. Close your windows.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/04/2020 23:25

Please don’t have a bonfire. It’s absolutely shit for people with asthma as it is with coronavirus about, why would you want to make it even more shit for us? Just horrible and no need.

Blamangeatrois · 09/04/2020 23:27

Agree with Shmith, bonfires are selfish and unreasonable, bbq is fine. I had distant neighbour having a bonfire last night , absolutely stunk, I could taste it even, god knows what they were burning. Totally unreasonable and unneighbourly in my opinion.

Because your bonfire could cause breathing problems in vulnerable people. Now is not the time for that, don’t you think?

Do you really need that to be spelled out ?!

Alessi89 · 09/04/2020 23:28

BBQ ok. Bonfire really not.

Cabinfever10 · 09/04/2020 23:29

Thankfully round here it's illegal to have a bonfire or would burner between 7am and 7pm(local bylaw) .
BBQs are fine though

phoenixrosehere · 09/04/2020 23:30

Bbq yes, bonfire not so much. That is a great way to anger your neighbours and have the fire department called, unless you live far away from your neighbours and wooded areas

CazM2012 · 09/04/2020 23:30

We are on day 10 of a bonfire every single bloody day Angry different times, morning, noon and night, it’s warm enough to air the house out properly and play in the garden but no, we have that to contend with. So I’d say no, there has to be some consideration to surrounding people.

blue25 · 09/04/2020 23:31

Having a bonfire in your garden is incredibly selfish and inconsiderate, but go ahead, you obviously only care about yourself.

CecilyP · 09/04/2020 23:32

If you could confine the smoke from the bonfire or barbecue to your own ‘bloody house and garden’ that would be fine. However as that is impossible you sound extremely selfish. Do you not consider you may be robbing your neighbours of their joy?

recededpronunciation · 09/04/2020 23:32

Local council here have asked people not to light bonfires during lockdown. BBQ I can’t get worked up about.

The problem is that your bonfire might be on your property but the smoke goes into everyone else’s. Unless you would like to have it actually in your house, with the windows shut - feel free, then
OP.

DeeCeeCherry · 09/04/2020 23:38

Bonfires let out toxic particles that find their way into the lungs. Not to mention they're bad for the environment. Really OP? You'd have a bonfire at this time, without consideration? BBQ I'm not bothered about but any neighbour lighting a bonfire I'd go round there and have a word. That's if someone hadn't reported you by then, which in these pandemic times they likely would.
