To think it's my bloody house and garden so I'll have a bbq or bonfire if i want too?

Just as the title suggests really.

We're already confined to our homes for the most part, why are people now trying to control what we can and cannot do in our own gardens?

Need to find as much joy as possible or I'll join all the other near alcoholics that have evolved at this point.

I hate the smell of BBQs far more than garden bonfires, but I hate the smell of cigarettes more. My neighbours don't smoke but I'd really hate living next door to anyone whose cigarette smoke drifted from their garden to mine.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/04/2020 01:17

oh FFS who gives a shit about your fucking washing?!

During term time most of you outsource to some poor NMW cow to do it for you, but now you are doing youself you suddenly care?!

We are doing what we can to get through and if that means a lunchtime BBQ or and early evening bonfire, fucking get over it.

catfeets · 10/04/2020 01:23

@Sparklesocks it's happening a lot lately. My DP's brigade are out multiple times a night to put out garden fires and also bonfires started in the woods where people are gathering thinking they won't be found out for having a small party. They are already very short staffed and are only running one or two fire engines so vital call outs will be missed.
There's also been an increase in house fires so idiots having out of control bonfires put out could cause someone to lose their house. But at least someone will get some joy from their garden fire Hmm

RarePackOfLooRoll · 10/04/2020 01:27

Our fire brigade have said not go have bonfires at the moment.

Sparklesocks · 10/04/2020 01:27

@catfeets wow that’s awful, I had no idea how bad it was. I suppose people have a fire or two which they manage fine and get ahead of themselves

catfeets · 10/04/2020 01:29

@YourWinter I get all 3 from my wonderful neighbour Angry.
Fag smoke is the worst though as I can't sit in my garden as she smokes right next to my fence. She also smokes by her front door so it comes in through the cat flap and letterbox. I can't have my windows open either as she smokes out of her windows too and it comes straight into mine.
I thought she might at least not smoke next to the fence when she can hear I have the baby in the garden, but no such luck.

catfeets · 10/04/2020 01:31

@Sparklesocks I'm assuming alcohol is a factor in a lot of the fires that get out of control.
Where my dad lives there's been a lot of people burning plastics and it smells awful all day and night.

DressingGownofDoom · 10/04/2020 01:36

Bbqs are ok because the purpose is to cook food. But a bonfire...why?!! That is a bit antisocial.

Topseyt · 10/04/2020 01:37

Cooking on a barbecue for your own family (no visitors to be invited) in your own garden is fine.

Lighting a smelly, smoky bonfire is inconsiderate at best, and downright dangerous at worst.

justgivemewine · 10/04/2020 01:39

The emergency fire services are telling people not to have bonfires ffs, but oh look op seems to have disappeared, have a Biscuit moron

Lalala89 · 10/04/2020 01:41

Bbq - absolutely
Bonfire = selfish asshat

MrFaceyRomford · 10/04/2020 01:44

BBQ's the stench of crap cooking and the sound of crap music and the noise of half cut idiots far into the summer's night. What's not to like?Hmm

ASimpleLampoon · 10/04/2020 01:52

Our local Fire Service has issued a statement on the matter:

"During these unprecedented times, we urge you not to be tempted to burn your garden or household waste.

Fire smoke can irritate airways, the skin and eyes, causing coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest pain. People with asthma and other respiratory diseases may become unwell because of fire smoke. These people are also at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Please don’t make things worse for them, the NHS, or the emergency services by starting a fire

Please stay home and stay safe.

Follow the link below to read more on refuse fires and the potential dangers..."

So yes, I'd say you were being unreasonable, and very selfish Perhaps think of neigbours who may have symptoms and need air to be clean to breathe.

Do what you like in your own garden but don't impact on other people

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/04/2020 01:53

What? Not read all of the replies. Since when can't we be in our gardens having a BBQ or bonfire?!
YANBU

lyralalala · 10/04/2020 02:04

Why are so many people lightning bonfires?

Because it's been a whole two weeks since their garden bin was emptied and they can't possibly keep the waste in a corner of the garden until they resume

Or because they've been renovating/having a clear out and don't want to store stuff

Mostly because people are selfish shits and they don't actually care that their bonfire affects their neighbours, even when there's lots of people suffering from the effects of a respiratory illness.

There's WWIII on my town FB page because a lady in her 70's got home from hospital yesterday having been in wtih Covid19 for the last 10 days. Her neighbour lit a bonfire about an hour after giving her a welcome home wave from his window. Selfish prat.

BanKittenHeels · 10/04/2020 02:08

Bonfires exacerbate my severe asthma and as I’m shielding, it’s not like I can even escape for an hour.

Thrashscar · 10/04/2020 02:10

Selfish fuck
Your attitude is so bad I’m convinced this is a wind-up

youkiddingme · 10/04/2020 02:11

Why do people even need to have a bonfire?
Bonfires cause a worsening of symptoms for people with breathing difficulites, the last thing anyone needs right now.
They are also a hazard when all our emergency services have way better things to spend their time on.
And if it's to get rid of rubbish, a bonfire is a terrible way to do that.

beethecrackon24995 · 10/04/2020 02:13

Bbq is one thing but to 'enjoy' having a fucking bonfire 😐 majorly cunt like towards other neighbours who have no choice but to retreat into their homes and close all windows. Arsewipe

Yeah fuck my breathing.

Summersun77 · 10/04/2020 02:39

What is a bonfire? A literal, actual bonfire? I don’t know anyone who has these in their garden. I have a chimnea is that the same as a bonfire? They’re really popular and I’ve never considered them to be antisocial Confused

Thrashscar · 10/04/2020 02:51

@Summersun77 not the same. We’re talking actual bonfires

stellabelle · 10/04/2020 02:54

I can't even believe that bonfires are still allowed in the UK. Where I live ( Australia) they've been banned since I was a kid, under the Clean Air Act. Why on earth would anyone need to light a bonfire in their garden ? Beats me.

feelinguseless78 · 10/04/2020 02:54

Notimeforaname because of the nice weather and lockdown lots of people are doing lots of gardening but most authorities have cancelled the garden waste collection and closed the tips/ waste and recycling centers.

Summersun77 · 10/04/2020 02:54

Literally never heard of this in my life. Amazed at how many threads there is on MN about it at the moment- so common here is assumed they meant chimneas and fire pits!
