To think it's my bloody house and garden so I'll have a bbq or bonfire if i want too?

Just as the title suggests really.

We're already confined to our homes for the most part, why are people now trying to control what we can and cannot do in our own gardens?

Need to find as much joy as possible or I'll join all the other near alcoholics that have evolved at this point.

I’m asthmatic. Bonfires give me asthma attacks. The particles are way more dirty thank bbqs and way more irritating to the lungs. BBQ’s I’m fine with.

I can’t imagine how bad it is for people with covid if they have to inhale toxic smoke. You could make them severely worse.

When I lived in the UK I loved good a bonfire. On the 5th November. Can't see the "need" to have one otherwise, and certainly not all with CV-19 about.

I missed it all a bit when I came to Melbourne where all backyard bonfires are utterly banned, but do appreciate the cleaner air. Now I think of it, local councils have the stick of no bonfires and the carrot of very efficient garden rubbish collections, so 100% compliance.

Back to the OP, YABVU. Have a thought for others' health and their enjoyment of their garden/home.

BBQ fine. Bonfire so smoke goes all over neighbours gardens is very different.

HopelessLayout · 10/04/2020 00:14

"The council is calling on residents to consider your own health and that of your neighbours by not having bonfires where possible during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Please avoid lighting fires in case others living near you have had their breathing affected due to the virus or have other respiratory problems that could be worsened by smoke."

Seems pretty clear why not, to me!

itsamadmadworld · 10/04/2020 00:17

We had to go inside from our garden today because of somebody smoking weed, and then as soon as we were inside and had opened the windows a bonfire was started so we had to shut the windows again because it smelt like burning plastic. Was sat in a room that was 24.4 degrees Celsius with the fan on full blast and all of us stripped right down but still sweating like crazy. It's very unreasonable to have a bonfire at the minute. I think bbqs can be okay because they don't seem to create as much smoke (or at least mine don't)

DodgeRainClouds · 10/04/2020 00:18

Having a bonfire when people are at home suffering from breathing difficulties is so utterly selfish. I was really breathless and using my inhaler loads recently. No idea if I had Covid 19 but we all self isolated Incase. Some idiot lit a bonfire and I wanted to kill them

Sparklesocks · 10/04/2020 00:21

Our council are clamping down on bonfires at the moment. We have quite a large number of covid cases in our area (London Borough) and smoke in the air is going to be awful for people who are already struggling to catch their breath.

Teana89 · 10/04/2020 00:26

A bbq is fine. A bonfire is a wanker idea.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/04/2020 00:30

MistyMonday That's terrible !
The classic example of why bonfires should be banned in residential areas during this CV creisis

I hope you feel better again in the morning 💐

Notimeforaname · 10/04/2020 00:31

I'm totally missing the point here but... Why are so many people lightning bonfires?
Do they mean a little fire pit for heat or what? What are they burning and why is a bonfire needed all day? I've seen a lot of threads on this and I can't figure it out Confused

browzingss · 10/04/2020 00:31

Yep, bonfires are antisocial. Particularly when the weather is as warm as it currently is, I need my window open to sleep. And honestly to even be able to breathe well as I seem to be developing symptoms. Remember covid 19 effects the lungs so that last thing that anyone with breathing difficulties needs is the stench of your smoke impacting their breathing. It’s recommended for suspected covid carriers to crack a window open

catfeets · 10/04/2020 00:31

Well seeing as my DP spends his night shifts putting out fires that idiots have set in their gardens and lost control of, yeah I do think you're being unreasonable to think it's fine.

Also it makes you a really shitty neighbour. Guess it doesn't matter that you're filling the houses around you with smoke - it comes straight through the vents of my house when knobheads on my street have bonfires.

Can't understand what 'joy' having a fire brings anyway. My neighbour no longer finds it so much fun since she set fire to 8 gardens last year with their 'small bonfire' after weeks of no rain mixed with rows of trees and fences Angry

Notimeforaname · 10/04/2020 00:31

*lighting

ttim985y · 10/04/2020 00:33

@HopelessLayout I think part of the problem is the language being used. "where possible", "avoid" etc. They aren't just saying "DON'T DO IT".

We've got people arguing on our local Facebook pages that they NEED to get rid of their garden waste or waste from renovating their house. no you don't!! You just have to live with it like everyone else.

I've got garden waste cluttering up my garden but it will just sit there until I can dispose of it properly

Sparklesocks · 10/04/2020 00:34

Yes @catfeets that’s another thing, although unlikely in a lot cases there’s also the risk that a bonfire will get out of control and require emergency services, diverting them from other vital callouts

ttim985y · 10/04/2020 00:34

I'd love them to be banned for good

PeytonManning · 10/04/2020 00:38

When you say bonfire, do you mean actual bonfire or firepit? Because the first would be a bad idea but the second is ok. IMO anyway.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 10/04/2020 00:43

We're in the middle of a nation-wide lockdown during the worst global pandemic in living memory with thousands of people dying from a virus that causes respiratory difficulties and respiratory failure and you want to add extra pollutants and particles to the air?

The stupidity of some members of the human race is beyond belief!

notangelinajolie · 10/04/2020 00:45

OP which one is it? BBQ or bonfire? Perhaps it's both.

Either way your attitude stinks.

Ihavechangedmyname2manytimes · 10/04/2020 00:56

Neighbours 2 doors away decided that they can burn their old garden fences in a bonfire and proceeded polluting for 3 days in a row. Luckily, someone reported them and today I was able to spend some time in the garden and open bedroom window. It wasn't me that reported them, but I very nearly did!

LeviOsaNotLeviosAR · 10/04/2020 00:57

It's more than breathing issues that need to be considered with bonfires. It is the fact that our emergency services are on their knees and the last thing they need is absolute twats lighting bonfires in their gardens that get out of control requiring fire services to come to extinguish, or someone gets a burn and needs a visit to hospital.

Hardly rocket science why it's a stupid idea right now. Hmm

Thedogscollar · 10/04/2020 00:57

Unbelievably selfish and takes stupidity to a whole new level.

BiarritzCrackers · 10/04/2020 01:04

It's April.

Bonfires are an autumn thing, not a low 20s sunny weather thing.

JustOneMoreStep · 10/04/2020 01:11

Hmm none of you lot are farmers then. I live rurally granted, but the farmers around here seem to have a near constant bonfire, so it doesnt seem that big deal to me, assuming your not doing anything crazy like burning tyres blerg
