To think it's my bloody house and garden so I'll have a bbq or bonfire if i want too?

Just as the title suggests really.

We're already confined to our homes for the most part, why are people now trying to control what we can and cannot do in our own gardens?

Need to find as much joy as possible or I'll join all the other near alcoholics that have evolved at this point.

Not having bonfires being within the stipulated requirements/regulations where I am, whereas having having a BBQ is still okay. But obviously should be done with maximum consideration for those potentially affected just as in the general way of it.

Crunchymum · 10/04/2020 14:01

Given we are all trying to make the most of our outside space, consideration goes a long way.

Not sure why you need a bonfire @Werkwerkwerkwerkwerkwerk ?

rosiejaune · 10/04/2020 14:05

YABU. The garden is yours, but the air you are polluting is not.

mommybear1 · 10/04/2020 14:08

BBQ - fine. Bonfire ydbvu it spoils the air for everyone no windows open on a hot day??? No it's selfish.

Grandmi · 10/04/2020 14:16

BBQ yes Bonfire definitely no!

Knowhowufeel2 · 10/04/2020 14:42

Shame people don't have the same opinion on fireworks as they do bonfires.
Fireworks are also antisocial, but no one seems to give a shit about that, then it's all about people's rights and anyone with a pet should just keep them in/shut windows, etc.

Beepboop22 · 10/04/2020 14:51

Next door are blaring music, so loud I've had to silence my Zoom calls and type messages instead and I can't concentrate. It's disrespectful and inconsiderate. It may just be in your garden for your enjoyment but everyone else has to suffer it!

Beepboop22 · 10/04/2020 14:52

@Knowhowufeel2 nope fully with you on that, they're beyond irritating. People letting them off every Thursday atm for the clap for the NHS thing.

SoupDragon · 10/04/2020 15:02

Probably because they are completely different things.

Well for a start they happen at night so people probably aren’t out in their gardens eating dinner
Secondly they almost always happen in late autumn/winter so most people won’t have windows open or be outside full stop
Thirdly, they don’t make your clothes, hair, washing and house stink of smoke long after the event. Our neighbours 3 doors down have been having bonfires and my house reeks of smoke from them

They can cause major difficulties for those with lung problems though.

99% of Mumsnet wants a ban on the sale of fireworks - just do a search on threads and you will find bazillions of posters demanding a ban on private sale of fireworks.

Try telling the idiots around here they happen at night!

woodencoffeetable · 11/04/2020 21:04

bonfires/burning of garden waste should be illegal all year round if you have neighbours less than a mile away.
it's really inconsiderate and unhealthy.

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2020 21:19

We don't have bonfires but I had no idea they were so universally hated. I assume they won't be happening on the 5th November any more.

AnxiousMama24 · 11/04/2020 21:22

BBQ’s don’t really bother me the smell of food cooking actually makes me want to have one myself but bonfires in gardens especially when they have to make them ‘extra’ big takes the piss! My DD is in shielding due to a lung condition so only place she can go safely is our back garden , I could smell something while I was in the kitchen making food at about 12.30pm and heard her coughing then could see thick smoke and she was coughing so much I had to physically go get her from her swingset as she was coughing so much she couldn’t see tidy to walk into the house. So I closed all my windows and doors settled my DD give her some water and put a film on and then went out the garden closed the back door behind me and let loose with my hose pipe all over their lovely shitty bonfire could hear shouts but it just made me turn the pressure up even more ... also seen they had family members there sitting in the garden... I then proceeded to ‘water’ the lovely garden ..& their visitors Grin .. then i hear a clap from 2 doors down and see them grabbing their washing in because of the fire. Kind of egged me on even more hahahahaha

museumum · 11/04/2020 21:27

I’m sure there’s no exact definition but to me a bonfire is a big heap for burning garden rubbish. I’d say you need an acre or so of garden to justify that.
A small chimnea or fire bowl if used sensibly shouldn’t make smoke waft over to other gardens, maybe a hint of the smell of woodsmoke but not actual Smoke. It should make less than a bbq if you only use properly dried wood.

VeganVeal · 11/04/2020 21:30

I love a bonfire, its my right to have one so I will, blinking do-gooders

mondaynoon · 11/04/2020 21:34

Are you my neighbour? They have had about 4 bonfires since lockdown including one this afternoon that filled our garden with smoke. We had to go back into the house but that stank of smoke too because our windows were open.

BreconBeBuggered · 11/04/2020 21:42

Wind em up and watch em go, OP.
But YABU.

AppleSighDuh · 12/04/2020 13:44

I have a lot of garden waste that I need to get rid if so that I can use my garden. I dont have a car. Sensible suggestions as to how I can get rid of it without burning please?

BreconBeBuggered · 12/04/2020 13:50

There's nowhere to take it even if you did have a car. You'll have to let it rot down like everyone else. Everyone except the ruddy pyromaniacs, that is

AppleSighDuh · 12/04/2020 13:51

Its branches and ivy that's been there since last summer. It won't rot or break down. I'm talking about after lockdown, not now

Northernwarrior · 12/04/2020 13:56

You are a selfish cunt.

Sirzy · 12/04/2020 14:14

Hire a skip?

Compost it?

Fill your garden waste bin over a number of weeks?

Ask a friend with a car to help?

Just don’t burn it!
