Is it just every week we are in lockdown or is that it forever and we have become a nation of clappers? Do I need to move?

I really liked it the first time. Now it has become a ritual and our annoying neighbor peers up and down the road to see who is there and who isn't....

It's a ritual now ... I'm not good with ritual.

If it makes people happy then great.. but I've turned into a token clapper. Put my head out of the door to be seen then scurry back in.

kayleesmithy · 09/04/2020 21:08

There are people working their arses off trying to combat this heinous virus and you actually have the audacity to be bothered about it. They're on the frontline, made to go to work in this climate and putting their lives at risk. Just dig a hole and stay in it until the clapping stops!

Sosadandempty · 09/04/2020 21:08

@Kexdmviuko I hope you feel better soon xxx

CrowCat · 09/04/2020 21:09

I think the 'clap for a minute' memo was lost on the people in my area. It started at 8 with fireworks, continued with the bashing of pots and pans at half 8, and there's still fireworks and shouting going on now at just after 9. Unless everyone's clock is set wrong I'm assuming people are using this as an excuse to get outside and let off steam!

Kexdmviuko · 09/04/2020 21:11

Thanks Sosadandempty!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 09/04/2020 21:11

I'm a nurse and I hate it. I come home from shitty shifts really stressed and don't feel any better because people are clapping. The fuckers round here voted for a Tory MP so they can all get stuffed😡

I know I'm irrational and rude but I hate most people and most things at the moment😳

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 09/04/2020 21:12

I'm assuming people are using this as an excuse to get outside and let off steam!

This is exactly what I came on here to say!

MoreThan40 · 09/04/2020 21:12

It’s one, ONE minute a week

I wish. We’ve just been subjected to some self indulgent twat singing karaoke for 30 minutes.

He’ll be back next week.... yay. 🤮

LaProfesora · 09/04/2020 21:12

It's an absolute cringefest.
Keep your fucking clapping and maybe next time don't vote for a party that has cut funding for public sevices.

Nanalisa60 · 09/04/2020 21:14

If you don’t want to clap then don’t do it!!

But don’t make other people feel bad because they do!!

Some people are just so judgemental on MN

LaProfesora · 09/04/2020 21:14

@Doyouthinktheysaurus
Sending you big hugs. Where I live people voted for a Tory MP too. Yet they all come out and clap. Hypocrites.

Lostthefairytale · 09/04/2020 21:15

If it means something to one NHS worker then that's enough for me. My sister in law is a nurse and it means something to her. I've seen videos on Facebook from two local hospitals which suggests it means a lot to them too.

grapesofraf · 09/04/2020 21:18

I think it’s odd and somehow seems to trivialise the seriousness of what’s going on. Can you imagine whole streets clapping during the 2nd world war to give thanks to all the service men and women. People weren’t as daft then.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 09/04/2020 21:20

@LaProfesora thanks so much🙏 Glad it’s not just me.

Divebar · 09/04/2020 21:20

Oh my god the misery guts are out in force.

herecomesthsun · 09/04/2020 21:20

There is a nice sentiment behind it. But sufficient PPE would be better.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 09/04/2020 21:22

Don't be so miserable you lot 😬

UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda · 09/04/2020 21:22

No clapping or pot-banging here, thank God. It's silent.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/04/2020 21:23

I see your bagpipes and raise you - a vuvuzela! I went out for the first time tonight (first week I was on the phone to my nan, last week I was dishing up dinner) and was surprised how many of my neighbours were out. There were no pots and pans, just a slightly awkward nod and clap, particularly to the chap walking his dog who was bowing as he walked past everyone clapping Grin but the kids down the end of the street had a vuvuzela and were having a great time.

Sirzy · 09/04/2020 21:23

But I’m not in a position to increase the amount of PPE. But I am in a position to show my appreciation in a simple way and a way which my friends who are key workers all seem to appreciate.

And my key worker partner will be back out tomorrow helping deliver plastic to make more PPE as he has been doing for weeks.

Sheslikethewind007 · 09/04/2020 21:24

Once a week for 5 minutes. I love it .

Sheslikethewind007 · 09/04/2020 21:25

Ps. The kids love it too and will always remember this. I hardly ever see some of my neighbours and its great to see everyone out

Northernsoullover · 09/04/2020 21:26

I have reluctantly gone out the last two weeks. The first week only my 95 year old neighbour was there so I was glad I went out as she is on her own.
The following week she wasn't there (she is fine) but my other neighbour was and we had an awkward stilted clap.
This week I went out again out of politeness. It seems everyone had the memo this week and it was really lovely to see people. No pots and pans though. Just a little ripple and well wishes. Based on tonights experience I will continue.

Ilovemypantry · 09/04/2020 21:26

@ClientQ
That did make me laugh, the thought of everyone in the street clapping your cat 😻

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/04/2020 21:26

Oh and my sister is a nurse who was redeployed to the covid critical care ward last night. She loves the sentiment and her hospital has all the ambulances and police with their sirens on, and the personnel stood outside them clapping.
