For not washing my shopping?

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

and anything that is cardboard and can't be washed or wiped goes in a freezer bag before it goes in the freezer.

Russellbrandshair · 08/04/2020 22:31

“Wiping over” isn’t enough to kill the virus. If it was, we’d be told to just wipe over our hands. So unless you are washing every surface area of every product purchased with hot water and soap for at least 20 seconds, “wiping over” will do Jack

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2020 22:32

Wiping over with a cloth that is wet and has washing up liquid on it will remove the virus in the same way that wiping over your worktops will remove it. @Russ

PineappleDanish · 08/04/2020 22:33

I'm not. I think the risk is so tiny that it's not worth it.

Pinkflipflop85 · 08/04/2020 22:35

I barely manage to find the time to clean my house so I'm not about to start cleaning my shopping.

A pp said that her post lady is spraying post with dettol. She could get in trouble for that, as it is technically classed as tampering with mail.

RickOShay · 08/04/2020 22:36

@Heartbroken123456
I’m so sorry to hear about your mum, wishing you peace and strength Flowers

waltzingparrot · 08/04/2020 22:38

DSis is buying mainly jars, packets and tins that she just leaves quarantining in a corner for 72hours, then she unpacks it.

Eucritta · 08/04/2020 22:38

Washing the shopping. No, no, no.

I wash my hands before eating or preparing food, and after going to the loo. I generally wash them when I get home, but that's mostly because I get home at the kinds of times when I need to make lunch/supper. I mostly wash fruit and veg before eating them, but I didn't wash today's raspberries and cabbage, and didn't wash the lime of which I put a wedge in my G&T either. Though I'm sure I read (probably on MN) that alcohol kills viruses.

Other than that, there's no extra-ordinary washing going on here.

Geraniumblue · 08/04/2020 22:38

I’m not. I would be more worried about being ill from ingesting disinfectant. I don’t usually use disinfectant around the house In any case. Since the virus I have started disinfecting the door handles though.

Sertchgi123 · 08/04/2020 22:38

We are washing fridge and freezer shopping, the rest goes into quarantine.

Jellybean27 · 08/04/2020 22:38

So sorry to hear about your mum @Heartbroken123456 Sad

Russellbrandshair · 08/04/2020 22:38

I’d rather not spray things I’m going to be eating with bleach solutions or strong washing up liquid. I believe ingesting chemicals like that is one of the reasons cancer rates are soaring. I’m not “vulnerable” so I’ll take my chances with corona than risk cancer. Just my opinion anyway.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/04/2020 22:40

I'm not either, OP. Some things I'm not even sure how you would wash. Loaf of bread, not wrapped in plastic, how would you wash that? It would get all soggy.

Wehttam · 08/04/2020 22:40

I am, spray dettol onto kitchen roll and wipe over everything. Boxed items decanted out, if it has any cardboard sleeve that’s gone but I take a picture first for dates or cooking instructions. Fruit washed. Packing binned.

Wash hands after, dettol surfaces.

browzingss · 08/04/2020 22:41

I haven’t been washing my shopping, no. I don’t have any symptoms so presumably haven’t picked up the virus from my shopping thus far.

I have been washing my hands profusely though, to the point that my skin has become quite dry now. Therefore my hands are clean before I eat or touch my face etc.

yearinyearout · 08/04/2020 22:41

The thing is, would a wipe with cleaning spray actually do anything? Thought it was soap required to kill the virus, or minimum 70% alcohol gel.

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 22:42

Sorry but I can't believe people are NOT doing this.

Well as you can see, lots aren’t and for many different reasons.
Personally I don’t think I’d be able to effectively clean all my shopping and the thought of my shopping trying to kill me would give me too much anxiety so I prefer to just accept the minimal risk and not think about it. As someone else mentioned, unless you’re going to isolate until a vaccine is made, it seems a bit pointless.

eurochick · 08/04/2020 22:42

If you are extremely vulnerable I could maybe see the point to this.

Otherwise as has been said, there is no exit strategy here beyond most of us getting this thing, just not all at once. So I am following the guidelines as I don't want to risk being ill at the peak with no hospital bed available but I'm accepting of the fact that I am highly likely to get it at some point, so I am not sure extreme measures are worthwhile.

KatoPotato · 08/04/2020 22:42

We decant what we can into freezer bags etc, throw away any external packaging, we have lots of time to spare right now so why not?

PickAChew · 08/04/2020 22:43

Hell no. I'd rather not ingest dettol.

I'm washing ds1's melon, which is sold unpackaged and gets eaten raw in soapy water, before cutting it up, though.

Burntoutboobout · 08/04/2020 22:43

My OH did last week, he used half a bottle of Dettol! When I took a bite of toast I could literally taste it off the bread. It wasted an entire loaf! I was not happy Grin So YADNBU! I I just make sure I wash my hands frequently and try and sustain from licking any of the packaging Grin

Eucritta · 08/04/2020 22:44

So if you take a bottle of milk out of the fridge, have you not washed the plastic bottle first?

No

Or wiping over the plastic bag covering a loaf of bread?

No

Sorry but I can't believe people are NOT doing this

I find it a bit unbelievable that people are doing it. But everyone has their own way of doing things.

smiften · 08/04/2020 22:45

I use 70% alcohol spray on all chilled and frozen stuff that needs to go in the fridge. The rest is quarantined for a few days. Post is left to one side or sprayed, opened and the envelope disposed of. Been doing this for a month, it's a pain in the backside, but doable.

A vet now tells us we should keep the cat in if possible......it's not.

Redwinestillfine · 08/04/2020 22:46

I wipe everything down with hot water and fairy liquid. That Dr they have on the BBC recommended it in answer to a viewers question which made me feel I was less mad for doing it

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/04/2020 22:48

They brought the shopping in, laid out all out on a sheet, then washed or disinfected each item before putting it away. Then they burnt the sheet.

!!?
