For not washing my shopping?

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

So glad Im not alone. As others have said, it’s tip me over the edge and I think the risk is minimal anyway. If I thought about it to deeply I’d be cleaning everything all day every day. I put stuff away and lots of it doesn’t get touched for days so I tell myself it’ll be ‘clean’ by then. I just wash my hands after touching it and detol the worktops.
I did detol the cupboard handles last time as I was touching items then cupboards but even that felt a bit extreme.

Depends what it is.

Things I'm likely to use soon get a quick wipe with cleaning spray. Things to use later get put away as is. I do clean the fridge door and all surfaces after putting the shopping away though, and wash hands after getting things out ready for use.

Washing fruit thoroughly before consumption.

No one is particularly high risk, DH is working, but pretty well entirely from home for now, DH and I take turns shopping and DC see no one, so I'm taking a view that I will go for a reduction of likely viral load on shopping/deliveries rather than attempting to eliminate completely.

PeterPomegranate · 08/04/2020 21:35

Nope. I can’t bear to I’m afraid.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/04/2020 21:36

No! That way madness lies!

Gigabitten · 08/04/2020 21:37

No. That way, madness lies.

Tessaraqt · 08/04/2020 21:38

Nope, I'm not either. I wash my hands when I come into the house, and again once I have packed it all away. I don't wipe down post etc either.

I can't help but keep thinking that if a vaccine is 12 months+ away, we all have to catch it eventually. We can't live a life of washing our shopping for over a year. So I take normal sensible precautions, and what will be will be. (Disclaimer; not vulnerable, no underlying conditions etc)

Gigabitten · 08/04/2020 21:38

jinx @ILikeyourHairyHands

Putapeonyinyourpocket · 08/04/2020 21:38

I am washing all fruit and veg, spraying all shopping with dettol and washing shopping bags... It's a total nightmare, military operation that now I've started I cannot stop, I'm driving my husband bonkers.
I've promised him that once lock down is lifted I will stop!

YouTheCat · 08/04/2020 21:40

Nope.

I'm just going out for exercise. Keeping away from people (as is the rest of the house). Might have to go to the local shop for bread in a few days. Washing hands a bit more if necessary.

NaturalBornWoman · 08/04/2020 21:41

I’m shielded so am trying to do everything I can. I deal with post wearing gloves then wash hands thoroughly. Shopping I’m washing the stuff that needs to go in the fridge in a dilute bleach solution or wiping thoroughly with alcohol wipes if it can’t be submerged. Everything that doesn’t need the fridge is left for 3 days before handing. I’m not going mad cleaning the house but am cleaning door handles, light switches, the kettle etc. quite frequently and very careful bringing the bins in, bleached the handles and wore gloves.

Nacreous · 08/04/2020 21:41

Nope.

I lived with someone with severe OCD, to the point it controlled their life totally. I can have a tendancy to the obsessive if I start thinking about things too much, so I solve it by refusing to consider all of that. The risk is minimal and if I start cleaning the shopping I would also have to worry about a myriad other unclean things so I just choose not to worry about any of it.

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 21:41

I have to keep reminding myself of this. There’s no point in sending myself crazy if I’m going to get it anyway at a later date. Maybe if I thought these efforts were to eradicate it, I would. But sadly that’s not the case.

Nor me OP.

Not enough hours in the day.

Muddlingalongalone · 08/04/2020 21:42

Noooo - I am wiping down parcels when they arrive though

Nacreous · 08/04/2020 21:42

Sorry the point of my friend above is I watched how that obsessiveness controlle d their lives and destroyed their happiness and I will therefore never willingly set off even a small way down that road because it can be a nightmare to come back.

ISawATiger · 08/04/2020 21:44

Well the way I see it is, I always wash my fruit and veg before using or anyway, so I'm just doing that when it comes into the house rather than when I go to use it. And it's actually quicker as anything loose goes straight in the washing bowl, and anything in packs gets taken out, packs thrown immediately away, and then it all gets cleaned, dried and put away, and is ready to use when needed. The packaged good for cupboards (cereal, pasta etc) gets emptied into jars/containers in the cupboards anyway, so outer packaging gets binned straight away, cupboard stuff such as tins and jars, we leave in the bags untouched for a few days before using/putting away, and any fridge stuff (yogurts, oat milk, juice) gets a quick dunk, wash and dry before going away. The only thing I'm doing extra is washing the chilled stuff, and getting rid of external packaging where possible. I'm shielding due to a health concern, and have young children in the house so will avoid exposure as much as I can. This little thing just makes me feel a tiny bit better. If I didn't have the health issue, I probably wouldn't think twice though and just put it straight away.

Typhoonmarie · 08/04/2020 21:45

I’m not doing it. I was trying not to touch things for a few days but Dh did a big shop the other day and I cried trying to put theb fridge things away without it touching other things and it just seemed too much

Kitchendoctor · 08/04/2020 21:46

No. That way, madness lies.

You could say that under normal circumstances.

Previously I thought stuff coming into the house was pretty low risk, but after hearing today about a couple who have been hospitalised with covid despite not leaving the house for 5 weeks I will continue to wash shopping (after poor DH has been out to get it). Just a wipe with soapy water. It’s a pain in the arse but feels necessary.

quertyuiop100 · 08/04/2020 21:46

I'm not washing my shopping. I saw a VERY detailed FB post from someone local the other day and I thought wtf. They brought the shopping in, laid out all out on a sheet, then washed or disinfected each item before putting it away. Then they burnt the sheet. Far too much faff for me.

NotStayingIn · 08/04/2020 21:47

So I could be completely wrong, but I got the impression that if you got a little exposure to the virus you got ill, but most likely not too horrifically. Whereas of course if you get a proper spray of it (through direct contact with a person) or prolonged contact (like a nurse or doctor might) you get it worse.

So I’m not washing shopping as I think even if there is a bit on it, maybe that wouldn’t be so bad? Get it over and done with?

EatDessertFirst · 08/04/2020 21:51

I don't quarantine or wash my shopping or post either, nor do I wear mask and gloves to the supermarket. There is no official advice to do any of these things and frankly, I think its overkill but each to their own. I wash my hands regularly.

I do wish people who wear gloves to the supermarket would stop chucking them on the floor by their cars though. Its a huge bugbear of mine.

30daysoflight · 08/04/2020 21:52

I washed mine for the first time today as my DH is worried as I am high risk. Made me more anxious than when I haven't.

Then I watched 'Contagion' on Netflix. What the hell is wrong with me.

Keep safe all.

sauvignonblancplz · 08/04/2020 21:52

Yep everything gets washed . Used to be fruit and veg.
I definitely think it’s necessary as it can live on some surfaces for a long time . I can’t be bothered worrying about whether my kids have washed their hands after touching a yogurt, cereal box etc .
Wash it , put it away.
More for my piece of mind, it is a ball ache though .

Mummyshark2019 · 08/04/2020 21:53

I am not doing it.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/04/2020 21:55

Ha, I thought I'd double-posted there Giga
