For not washing my shopping?

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

There's a story in the news today about two youths caught licking their hands and smearing it over fresh produce in Sainsbury's Morecambe, so I will definitely be washing fruit and veg!

2020changedtheworld · 09/04/2020 11:56

And why would they need bags on their shoes to leave a crate on the doorstep?

Maybe the delivery vans dont get cleaned very often and he is worried about the driver before.

Inkpaperstars · 09/04/2020 12:11

I think that's right Frompcat

You've concluded quite rightly I think that ocd poses more risk to your wellbeing and your life than Coronavirus.

I have also suffered from very extreme ocd in the past and I will never be cured but right now it is under control, up to a point. So far I have found that when I feel the need to clean relating to this pandemic it is just coming from a different part of my brain. It doesn't feel like the ocd. But the minute it did start to feel that way I will be doing the same as you and prioritising mental health. Obviously I would still take the basic precautions.

Inkpaperstars · 09/04/2020 12:13

just guessing that they only wear them when out of the van so they don't track anything back into the van.

Alsohuman · 09/04/2020 12:17

It’s clearly not Tesco policy or the guy I saw yesterday would have been wearing them - and a mask. If he’s taking them off and putting them back on that must be wasting so much time.

Surely Dettolling everything makes you more likely to poison yourself. Plus touching every packet means you’re more likely to get germs on hand than touching only as necessary...

2beautifulbabs · 09/04/2020 12:28

I'm not either I think the risk of poisoning yourself with what ever your using to cleaning your food is far greater at moment than catching covid 19 off of food so long as fruit and veg are washed before consumption and your hands are washed after shopping etc and before eating I think that's all we can do

Pinkflipflop85 · 09/04/2020 12:29

@middleager surely you washed fruit and veg before this pandemic anyway?

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 09/04/2020 12:33

Yep, I'm washing shopping because I have a shielding person in the household. Anything in packaging gets wiped down with damp kitchen towel with washing up liquid on, anything where the packaging can be discarded and replaced with cling film or put in a box is repackaged accordingly, fresh fruit and veg washed in a weak solution of WU liquid, rinsed off well and dried with my kitchen towel.

You do whatever you feel is necessary to keep you and yours safe, and I'll do the same for me and mine.

Livpool · 09/04/2020 12:35

I'm not doing this

MyCatHatesEverybody · 09/04/2020 12:37

Someone (apologies can't remember who) posted this link the other day which is very reassuring:

(You might need to click on accept or similar before you can read it)

middleager · 09/04/2020 14:57

Pink I did indeed but now that has extended to the likes of Satsuma and Avacado skins!

ChocolateTea · 09/04/2020 15:07

Everything that comes into this house gets sprayed with a cleaner and wiped down with kitchen roll. It takes me an extra 5 minutes on the shopping, twice a week. My clothes also go straight in the washer and I go straight in the shower after shopping, and carrier bags go in the bin.

Walks/exercise are different as we don't come into contact, so we just wash hands usually - though if I've been running or cycling I need to shower and wash my clothes anyway

I do have ocd. And health anxiety. This was one way of me personally feeling more in control, and protecting DP. I wash post, parcel, food packaging. I didn't do it before corona. I hope I don't continue after. But right now it helps me feel that I'm doing my best to protect someone with type 1 diabetes.

ChocolateTea · 09/04/2020 15:08

And I also wipe down door handles and my car wheel and handles as well to cover all scenarios post shopping

couchlover · 09/04/2020 17:09

I'm not - i asked a colleague earlier and she isn't either.

ikeairgin · 09/04/2020 18:47

I work in a supermarket so there's no point in me doing this - but I do wash my hands regulaly and we have gloves and face shields to wear in store.

Rover83 · 09/04/2020 18:58

I am not a clean person at all and I am not shielding anyone high risk, added to that I am a frontline keyworker who has already been very unwell with likely Covid-19. However this week I washed my shopping, weirdly I think if I had gone to the supermarket and picked it myself I might not have however I got a delivery slot (booked a month ago) and I have 2 young children. I am doing every single thing within my power to not bring this home from work including showering at work and lots of other little things. It seemed ridiculous to then allow shopping that may have been touched by hundreds of people into my house without a quick wipe over with a soapy cloth.

purplegirl13 · 09/04/2020 21:10

I am doing this, only because I am in in the shielding group. I'm safe at home in my bubble so anything coming in to my place is a risk. Absolutely wouldn't be wiping groceries down otherwise - would just wash my hands before and after

Gracei · 09/05/2020 18:33

What do you use to sanitise your shopping
