For not washing my shopping?

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 21:20

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

I've tried to but it's exhausting when it's a week's shop.

BeijingBikini · 08/04/2020 21:58

Oh god, there's no way in hell I would ever disinfect/sanitise anything. If I get it I get it. I just rinse the fruit and veg as I've always done!

GabsAlot · 08/04/2020 21:59

how do things not go soggy

no i havent washed anything post shopping nothing

Gatehouse77 · 08/04/2020 22:00

Not washing shopping
Not wearing gloves
Not wearing a mask

I am keeping my distance, reducing my trips out and generally not touching anything I don't absolutely have to touch.

Ditto

nicerainyweather · 08/04/2020 22:00

I don't want to wash the shopping, but quarantining is much less hassle. I have a plastic box in the back garden, and have decided to put shopping in it for a week or so. And wipe down the stuff that goes into the fridge or freezer.

Carbosug · 08/04/2020 22:01

Yes I'm living with a high risk person and am terrified óg bringing the virus into the house. Shopping gets washed, post quarantined and credit card and car keys sanitised before I touch them again.

I'd rather be ott than put my family member at risk.

Bluewater1 · 08/04/2020 22:01

No. I have struggled with OCD in the past and it was truly debilitating. If I start sanitising my shopping I know I could deteriorate again..... thoroughly wash my hands instead

Meruem · 08/04/2020 22:02

I’m not as I agree with many pp’s who say that way madness lies.

Also to me, a very important point is the fact that we are all at risk from COVID until a vaccine is found. In the interim, lock down will be relaxed because of the economy and people’s sanity. So ultimately most of us will still get it. The point has never been to stamp out the virus, it is to flatten the curve. With that in mind, there is only a point to disinfecting your shopping if you are planning to stay fully locked down until Spring 2020. Are most of us planning to do that? I very much doubt it.

Meruem · 08/04/2020 22:03

Sorry spring 2021 that should have said!

TwiceAsNice22 · 08/04/2020 22:04

I am. I have (actual, diagnosed) OCD and am really finding this hard. My OCD has been under control and manageable for years. I do not want it to flare up and become all consuming again (especially as I now have young children). I am trying to keep things under control and being aware, so things don’t get out of control. But I do worry about how I will ever go back to normal once this ends.

maggiso · 08/04/2020 22:05

Are the disinfecting antibacterial wipes and cleaning sprays like Dettol actually antiviral? I’ve tried wiping a few things ( hands and car etc) with surgical spirits but it is flammable so I’m not sure that isn’t a fire risk.

zigaziga · 08/04/2020 22:05

Not washing shopping
Not wearing gloves
Not wearing a mask

Same.

TotesGodsWill · 08/04/2020 22:06

I’m not. I leave nonperishables in the bags for a few days to let any germs hopefully die off before I handle them.

But I do have anxiety so I’m wary of going down that road and it being a slippery slope for me personally.

From a practical POV, I did wipe down some e45 cream that arrived today because I would be touching the package then rubbing the cream into cracked skin, so higher potential risk. I realised just trying to wipe one hard surfaced container that it would be impossible to do everything thoroughly without cross contaminating it all anyway

sonjadog · 08/04/2020 22:07

Each time I have been to the shop I have considered this and thought "nah, can't be bothered". Too lazy.

Tzigane · 08/04/2020 22:07

I quarantine post. I don't know if I can face washing shopping.

Maybe I should.

RingtheBells · 08/04/2020 22:08

I’m not washing shopping or quarantining it or post. Or wearing gloves or mask.

Yester · 08/04/2020 22:09

If I had one if the risk factors I would as shop workers are so at risk of getting the virus and passing it on.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 08/04/2020 22:11

I’ve got OCD which is controlled but I’ve given in to giving shopping a quick wipe down. I’m not wearing gloves or mask though to go shopping, just hand sanitizer and washing hands regularly

Pebbles574 · 08/04/2020 22:11

I've been unloaded it all onto the kitchen table then spraying across it all with Dettol anti-bacterial/anti-viral spray, letting it dry then putting it away.
Then I clean down the table.
Takes about 5 mins.

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 08/04/2020 22:11

No. But I am reasonably sure I have had it - all the symptoms and not like any virus I have had before, and I was in contact with a confirmed case. So although I wash my hands well, I’m not sanitising. I do leave non urgent post and food we don’t need straight away aside for a day or so, and wash fruit and veg (but I always do that anyway).

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 08/04/2020 22:12

Nope. I’m shielding but I can’t start off doing that kind of thing or I’ll go mad.

BestOption · 08/04/2020 22:12

No. That way, madness lies

Attitudes like this are just nasty & hurtful.

I'm not mad, I'm vulnerable. I have several underlying things & I'd rather not die alone, feeling like I'm drowning.

It's very contagious and people who have been isolating are dying - the only way in was through shopping.

It is a PITA, but I can live with that if it further reduces my risk of dying with it.

Yes I may well get it in the future, but hopefully by then they'll know better how to treat it & be less busy so have the time to treat me more individually.

If you're younger, have no underlying complications and aren't responsible for a much older person then I can see why you'd decide the risk was worth taking.

So why can't people be nicer about those of us choosing not to take the risk?

Heartbroken123456 · 08/04/2020 22:13

I have NC to comment.
If any of you are vulnerable wash your shopping and quarantine your post.
My Mum is in self isolation since the 13th of March. She tested Covid positive she is very ill. She hasn't crossed the door it had to be post or food deliveries. 😢

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 22:14

This sums it up for me

There’s no way I’m doing this, it’s properly bonkers.
