For not washing my shopping?

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 21:20

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

Absolutely not. I’m not quarantining post either. It’s pointless when I have to go out to work everyday and interacting with delivery people. No social distancing at all there so what’s the point.

Toomboom · 09/04/2020 08:11

No, not washing shopping or any post that comes in. We are a shielding household, and even I think this is a step too far.

Itoldyouiwasill · 09/04/2020 08:12

The only person I've heard of outside of MN to do this is a friend who is neurotic about germs anyway. He leaves a bowl of water and bleach on the go regularly and wipes anything that doesn't move.
He also happens to be a friend who constantly contracts infection.
For the people who wash their washing surely you'd also need to be stripping off at your door after every time outside and washing all your clothes?

Itoldyouiwasill · 09/04/2020 08:12

Wash their shopping

LadyGAgain · 09/04/2020 08:16

The surgeons dealing with this disease aren't washing their shopping. They say it won't make a difference. I'm going with that.

Inkpaperstars · 09/04/2020 08:42

I wouldn't change clothes or shower after going for a walk in which I kept distance from people and didn't sit down.

After supermarket trip I would.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 09/04/2020 08:44

I was being extra cautious (but not wearing a mask as I work in quality compliance of PPE so realise it's a risk ) washing everything down etc and distancing post/parcels etc.
However I am now recovering from suspected C-19 as is OH ( NHS diagnosed as suspected as OH is diabetic he spoke to the Nurse at the surgery & just is 2 in our household)
looking at where I picked it up? Seems most likely it was at the supermarket while I was shopping and idiots would not distance themselves from me. My pet hate was people wandering talking on the phone utterly oblivious to others in the isle at one point I was trapped in an isle between 2 of them and it was like trying to avoid zombies Grin or from products I bought at the supermarket and somehow it got through the additional cleaning.
Prior to lockdown I had been working from home for ten days and hasn't been out due to laryngitis and mental health.

I will be going with standard caution of hand washing/ face touching and distancing when I can finally leave the house but more than that and going back to washing and antibacterial spray and distancing my shopping etc? To me it now seems pointless and also increases my level of anxiety one hundred fold.

Do what's best for you and your anxiety levels but please be aware it's not a magic wand and it's still very possible to catch the virus.

We were very lucky and have come though quiet well however if the cough and wheezing could just stop now that would be great....tho I understand from the Nurse that is likely to last several weeks Sad

Roll on Saturday when we both get to 14 days and then only a short hop to Tuesday when I'm back to face Tesco again and a walk round the park instead of the garden

Nixee2231 · 09/04/2020 08:51

I sanitizer everything that comes into the house but I'm finding it completely overwhelming and sometimes have a panic attack so Im not sure it's worth it anymore

Tiredoutteacher2020 · 09/04/2020 09:00

I am quarateening post and parcels for 24 hours. Plastic parcels for 3 days or giving it a spray and then opening.

For food deliveries I am using a bowl of bleach water and then a bowl of soapy water to give things a good wash or wipe. If it's stuff I don't need for a few days I'm just leaving them in a bag for 3 days which saves time. I then disinfect the gate that they opened and fridge/freezer handles, kitchen surfaces incase of any cross contamination. Takes about 30 mins per delivery.

I'd rather be safe than sorry and it's only short term. I'm high risk so can't go to the shops.

Feodora · 09/04/2020 09:54

Thank you @Solina for your helpful reply to my question.

Aragog · 09/04/2020 09:59

No washing of shopping or post here. Wash my hands after unpacking it but that's mainly as I've been outside.

I thought we'd been told it was minimal risk. Hence why we can still have deliveries of post, parcels and food.

Aragog · 09/04/2020 10:00

I also don't know anyone else who are doing this either., including NHS doctors and nurses.

MigginsMs · 09/04/2020 10:02

I don’t either. It’s not been advised to do so, it’s only on here I’ve even seen it as a thing. Don’t touch your face after touching any of it and wash your hands after touching it, throw any packaging away and wash your hands after, surely that’s sufficient

koshkatt · 09/04/2020 10:04

I have never done this either but have just read this morning about scummy people licking their hands and daubing it all over anything they find in a shop. Bit worrying.

endofthelinefinally · 09/04/2020 10:18

I do the unpacking/wiping/cleaning of door handles, taps etc. DH and I are high risk and I want to delay either of us catching it as long as possible. Catching it now when resources are still so stretched could be fatal for us.
I do have several pairs of marigolds though and I only use hot water with a large squirt of detergent. Any degreaser is effective to destroy the fatty coating on the virus.
I can give the marigolds a good scrub and hang them up to dry. This means my hands aren't sore and cracked from washing constantly.

Aus84 · 09/04/2020 10:36

We have an isolation cupboard. Anything for the pantry or non food items go in there for a few days. Anything needed in the next day gets wiped with a disinfectant wipe. Fruit and veg are wash anyway. Lots of people are doing it where I live so I'm probably one of the lazy ones in comparison.

Inkpaperstars · 09/04/2020 10:43

An isolation cupboard is a great idea Aus

Frompcat · 09/04/2020 10:51

yeah. I live in a small 2 bedroom flat. I don't have space for a specific "isolation cupboard". Confused

Alsohuman · 09/04/2020 11:10

The Tesco delivery driver had bags over his shoes, a mask and gloves on

The one who stepped aside to let me pass yesterday was wearing gloves. No mask. And why would they need bags on their shoes to leave a crate on the doorstep?

Inkpaperstars · 09/04/2020 11:22

yeah. I live in a small 2 bedroom flat. I don't have space for a specific "isolation cupboard".

So do I but I still think it's a good idea.

We're just tripping over bags here and moving them around to get them out of the sun.

AmIAStone · 09/04/2020 11:27

@Heartbroken123456 I am so very sorry to hear about your mum and sending you much love.

Scissorsnglue · 09/04/2020 11:30

I'm pretty sure in one of the briefings Nicola Sturgeon talked about wiping down our shopping. I've been doing wiping and leaving stuff in the boot for a few days if I can.
When this is all over I will cheerfully tomorrow back to my usual slatternly ways.
Flowers to all those experiencing illness and bereavement just now.

Frompcat · 09/04/2020 11:33

At the height of my OCD I was washing my hands 300 times a day, they were stripped raw and bleeding. I wore plastic bags over my feet. I cleaned all day every day. I didn't work. I ate as little as possible to avoid outside food coming into my home. I tried to kill myself 3 times.

I've fought so long and hard to overcome that and I'm not risking going back there. Even just the handwashing is a massive trigger for me.

HelenaJustina · 09/04/2020 11:34

Nope nope nope.
Did wipe down the sides after DH helpfully I packed all of the shopping into the counter. But no way am I creating an isolation cupboard, washing or wiping down shopping or leaving post for 3 days. I would go bonkers and take my DC with me!

Scissorsnglue · 09/04/2020 11:49

My dc are not involved in cleaning the food.
If you'd asked me last year would I stay indoors and shut schools for weeks because of a flu-like illness I'd have said that was bonkers too. And yet here we are.
