For not washing my shopping?

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 21:20

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

No I won't because I have suffered OCD before and it still flares up on things so if I did this is get really bad again

Im washing my hands after putting shopping away
Showering after shopping and washing clothes I fear if I do to much I'll get really bad OCD yet again and it took me years to get over it

LizzieSiddal · 08/04/2020 22:48

I’m doing it as I’ve seen so many Drs/experts on the TV, saying that you should do it. I keep hoeing they’ll say “oh no, that won’t help” but they don’t! So I’m wiping most of the shopping with detox and kitchen towel. Anything which goes in a cupboard, stays the hall for 48hrs then is put away.
I must admit the whole shopping/unpacking and washing is making me really anxious, I only do it once every ten days.

TheClitterati · 08/04/2020 22:49

Nope not washing shopping. But I do leave non perishable groceries alone for a couple of days before unpacking but that is mostly because I'm lazy.

BreconBeBuggered · 08/04/2020 22:50

I don't understand quarantining the post. Anything I need gets put to one side, and once I've done with recycling the rest I wash my hands. That seems fine to me. I can bear to leave things that arrive in the post once I know what they are, but I couldn't leave things unopened.
I'm not washing my shopping either. One load got a thorough dousing in body wash the other day, but that was down to a crack in the bottle. The kind of washing I'd consider to be effective isn't really practicable for food shopping, or indeed the newspaper I get for the ILs once a week.

LizzieSiddal · 08/04/2020 22:50

Should have added, when I’ve washed everything down I go and get changed and wash all clothes. I realise it’s OTT, but it makes me feel better. Dh had pneumonia a few years ago and i really worry about him catching this thing.

TheSheepofWallSt · 08/04/2020 22:50

@Heartbroken123456

Sorry to hear that... but just to reassure some other posters (although it might actually not reassure hugely... Confused) the virus looks like it can have a very long incubation period in some cases.
There are reports of 27 day incubation periods from Hubei province.

For my part, I am wiping down some
shopping/ washing hands tonnes, minimising going out (last went out 9 days ago) and hanging things used to clean like teatowels, coats and fabric bags on the washing line in the sun after washing at 60 ... But my feeling is, having just eaten ben and Jerry’s out of the (wiped) tub, whilst constantly touching my face (can’t help it)... if the virus is THAT virulent, I’m going to get it anyway. No amount of dettoling bananas will stop it, so best not to trigger my (dx) OCD by going OTT.

Knittingnanny · 08/04/2020 22:50

I’m quarantine non perishables in the car boot until I need to bring them into the house. I’m only wiping stuff that goes in the fridge.

Marmunia1975 · 08/04/2020 22:51

I thoroughly sanitize my shopping on the advice of hubby who works in this field and I’d advise everyone to do the same. I initially laughed at him.

firstimemamma · 08/04/2020 22:53

I'm not washing my shopping either op.

BestOption · 08/04/2020 22:53

@Heartbroken123456. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum. I hope she pulls through xx
Despite having posted what you have, people still won't listen and accuse the rest of us if being crazy, bonkers, mad. If posts like yours don't make people think, you have to wonder what will 🙇🏻‍♀️

@ohdearmymistake

BestOption. people saying that are not being nasty or hurtful, it's merely stating what works for them

No it's NOT. Calling people crazy/mad/bonkers for taking precautions is NOT stating what works for them! As I said if they don't want to do it fine, but FFS just stop with the nasty name calling of those of us who are taking every precaution we can to stay alive.

Wehttam · 08/04/2020 22:54

PLEASE do not be complacent about getting this. Too many people here seem resigned to the fact they’ll get it anyway so they’re not bothering to protect themselves properly. This attitude is what allows mistakes to happen that can harm OTHERS, not only you. You don’t want this thing, for a start it can kill but regardless of that, there is no knowledge on long term effects of having had it and the damage it can cause

permana · 08/04/2020 22:54

Nope.
If it's that infectious than I'm going to get it sooner or later - I don't believe wiping things down brings any benefit, to me it's a bit like all those people who used to wash a chicken with salmonella - they just end up spreading it around the kitchen!

Gigabitten · 08/04/2020 22:54

Those who are going to these lengths,

this virus may be around for a very long time, or (with any luck) vanish and die out.

Are you really going to keep this up for months/years/from now on?

WobblyAllOver · 08/04/2020 22:57

No I am not washing shopping nor quarantining anything.

Wehttam · 08/04/2020 22:57

in a word YES Giga

I’ll be doing everything in my power to keep myself and my loved ones safe for as long as it takes.

SaigonSaigon · 08/04/2020 22:58

It's a bloody nuisance but I am quickly putting milk into warm soapy water and wiping over before putting into the fridge, putting chilled items into some large freezer bags (and sealing up) to leave for 72 hrs in the fridge. Tins, boxes, bottles I won't use for a bit I put in cupboards to quarantine for 72 hrs. Fruit take out of packs and chuck and wash and peel before eating. Sensible hand washing in between. I'm sure this method isn't foolproof. I'm sure if there are germs about on the food and I could see them I'd be missing some. But I'm happy to take at least some precautions.

Russellbrandshair · 08/04/2020 22:58

Forgot to say, I also believe that we need some bacteria (not covid obv) to keep our immune systems healthy. Bleaching everything has been shown in studies to be detrimental to our immune systems so I really do believe that getting rid of all germs (including bacteria that benefits us) will actually lower our immune response

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 08/04/2020 22:58

Giga it's not that arduous. You get quicker at it, the more you do it because you get into a routine. My friend has just come out of ICU, I don't mind spending an hour per week disinfecting shopping in the hope of slightly reducing our risk of getting ill.

Wehttam · 08/04/2020 22:58

Fucking dirty scum bags Kazzy

Prison would be wasted on them, throw them off a cliff.

Lavendersquare · 08/04/2020 22:59

I'm washing all my shopping, DH and I do it together, one wipes/washes and the other puts away. We not overly fussy but the fact they the virus can live for 72 hours on plastic and 24 hours on cardboard is focussing us to do this. It's a bit of a pain but actually doesn't take too long.

whattodo2019 · 08/04/2020 23:00

I am washing / dipping everything I buy in a
Sink of dilute Milton. In even making the family gargle with it!

malloo · 08/04/2020 23:01

I'm not. There's no way that you can effectively remove every possible germ by wiping it down. The risk is tiny. Far more at risk is your mental health if you start obsessing about things like this. Also risk of ingesting disinfectants, nasty stuff.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/04/2020 23:02

Surely people shouldn't be putting dettol or bleach on food.

LizzieSiddal · 08/04/2020 23:03

I don’t honk everyone is bleaching “everything”. I’m outside gardening everyday so will be picking up germs there I expect.
