For not washing my shopping?

Nochangeplease · 08/04/2020 21:20

It seems like on mn everybody is doing this but I don’t know anybody that has admitted to it in real life.
I’ll admit, I have become a little bit worried about it, but I’m partly too lazy to wash and wipe all my shopping, and also do not want to let myself get that obsessive. It can become a never ending cycle of cleaning (in general, not just shopping) and I think I’d find it hard to break in the future. I don’t want to send myself crazy.

My mom told me to leave the ambient stuff out for a few days before putting it away so i've just done that. The other stuff, we wash our hands after touching the packaging

Inkpaperstars · 08/04/2020 22:16

@Heartbroken123456

So sorry to hear your mum is unwell Flowers

DukeOfEarlGrey · 08/04/2020 22:17

I was, but I’m not anymore because it’s exhausting.

Carbosug · 08/04/2020 22:18

Anyone who's vulnerable will be trying to avoid needing admittance to hospital until the curve flattens. At least that way you'll get adequate medical attention and won't be competing against younger fitter people for ventilators.
No one wants to be the subject of difficult and heartbreaking decisions by doctors with not enough resources to go around.

JaceLancs · 08/04/2020 22:18

Not doing any of it!
I shop 1-2 times a week n am more strict about avoiding other shoppers than they are of me
I exercise most days but avoid others (they jog or cycle far too close n I have to dive out of their way)
I wash my hands thoroughly when I return from either that’s it
During the day I don’t go anywhere as am home working and wash my hands as usual food prep and after bathroom etc

AnneOfTeenFables · 08/04/2020 22:20

We're doing it but we have someone in the high risk category. I know other people that are doing it too - some have a medical background so very aware of cross-contamination - and some don't. Interestingly, we all started doing it before we'd heard any official advice about it, and independently of each other.
I think it is a balance if you think you're prone to OCD. DSIL has OCD and I do worry about the impact all of this will have on her.

Heartbroken123456 · 08/04/2020 22:21

@Inkpaperstars
My DM will probably be dead within 48 hours and I can't be with her.
Like I said she hasn't been outside at all.

Stripyhoglets1 · 08/04/2020 22:21

I am - quick rinse and I am happier doing this for now. Only doing this since lockdown.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 08/04/2020 22:21

I wipe my shopping before putting it away.
I hate doing it, but it seems somehow necessary at the moment.
I just hope I can stop myself from doing it after coronavirus is over Blush

Heartbroken123456 · 08/04/2020 22:22

@Inkpaperstars Sorry I meant to say Thank you after I tagged you.

GameSetMatch · 08/04/2020 22:22

I’ve not washed my shopping either, trying to be careful but I’d drive myself mad, my lovely post lady said she’s been dettol spraying the post before posting it, Which I thought was kind.

BumbleBeee69 · 08/04/2020 22:22

So it appears I am alone.. but I will not stop this practise...

I wipe down EVERYTHING I purchase.. everything..... it has been touched by countless hands ... so I clean it all with anti-septic wipes.. it takes a bit of time.. but it's worth it to know it's clean...

ohdearmymistake · 08/04/2020 22:24

BestOption

people saying that are not being nasty or hurtful, it's merely stating what works for them, because where would it stop. I real feel for OCD sufferers as this may be a hard habit to break for them when there will be no need to do it.

I'm not doing the mask, gloves or washing anything brought into the house, plenty have said they are doing it though it's not a personnel attack on you.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2020 22:24

Bit tired of seeing Shakespeare quoted so much "that way madness lies'.

If your shopping arrives wrapped in plastic, we've been told the virus could perhaps live on that for 2- 3 days. if the packet goes into your fridge the virus is still there. No proof is dies in cold temps.

I can't see the reason NOT to dispose of outer plastic packaging or wash items like bottles of milk first.

PositiveLife · 08/04/2020 22:25

I'm not. I'm too lazy to do it and don't actually understand how you can wipe everything (wtf do you do with bags of flour for example?)

Russellbrandshair · 08/04/2020 22:25

I am not. Mainly because unless you are using strong disinfectant or washing vigorously with soap and hot water for at least 30 seconds, it will be a complete waste of time and energy. A quick rinse with water isn’t going to kill virus germs - if it was they’d be recommending that for our hands. My thought is- either go the full way and scrub everything with disinfectant or don’t bother. So I’m not.

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 08/04/2020 22:26

I’m not. I leave nonperishables in the bags for a few days to let any germs hopefully die off before I handle them

Yep we're just doing this too. I'd consider soapy water but I'm won't be spraying any harsher chemicals on food packets. The chronic effects of doing that can't be great.

Macncheeseballs · 08/04/2020 22:26

I do. I'm not taking any chances

RoseCider · 08/04/2020 22:26

There’s a lot of antiseptic wipes that don’t kill Covid-19. It’s a virus, not a bacteria.

Member869894 · 08/04/2020 22:26

Heartbroken123456 sending you love and strength

Samcro · 08/04/2020 22:27

I don't, but wash my hands.
I did quarantine a parcel though.

BumbleBeee69 · 08/04/2020 22:27

wipe them with an anti-septic wipe... it's not hard Hmm

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2020 22:27

I've tried to but it's exhausting when it's a week's shop

But not as exhausting as being wired to a ventilator.

So if you take a bottle of milk out of the fridge, have you not washed the plastic bottle first?

Or wiping over the plastic bag covering a loaf of bread?

Sorry but I can't believe people are NOT doing this.

It's common sense.

BumbleBeee69 · 08/04/2020 22:28

Christ almighty I KNOW.... and mines DO.. Hmm

JinglingHellsBells · 08/04/2020 22:29

I have made a diluted bleach solution in a spray bottle. I stand things in the sink that can take being wet, spray them, dry on a towel that's then washed, or paper towels.

I take all fruit and veg out of the packaging, throw it away and wash the fruit or veg before it goes in a cupboard or fridge.
