I've just seen this in my FB page.
A local group has shared it.
'Clap for Boris' (see pic) Tonight 8pm.
Human to human, I wish him well & a full recovery but I won't be clapping... Hmm

Would it be unreasonable of me not to 'clap for Boris' tonight?

Clap.,don't clap,no one cares ,not sure why there are so many threads about people NOT clapping Confused

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/04/2020 10:23

It's Princess Diana syndrome

Glad I'm not the only person thinking this.

TheRuralJuror · 07/04/2020 10:25

I wish Boris and all people who are suffering with this virus well.

However, I think the clapping should be for the NHS and key workers...a Thankyou and keeping in mind of how important these people are, in keeping us safe and well.

tootiredtoconga · 07/04/2020 10:25

This whole clapping thing is really being milked for all it's worth, isn't it? We've had clap for carers, clap for keyworkers, clap for kids and now clap for Boris...and we've only been in lockdown for a couple of weeks!

As much as I loathe Boris Johnson's politics, I sincerely hope that he recovers. I wouldn't wish what he's going through on anyone. But I'm not about to stand outside my front door clapping like a demented seal as if that somehow makes any difference to the outcome whatsoever.

Marieo · 07/04/2020 10:25

Well don't then, not sure what the big deal is.

tiggerkid · 07/04/2020 10:28

Didn't know anyone was clapping but I won't be. I am not that impressed with politicians or, indeed, the royals to clap for them.

KenDodd · 07/04/2020 10:32

No.
I preferred the 'Boo for Boris' a couple of weeks ago.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 07/04/2020 10:33

I do wish Johnson well. It's the clapping itself I object to, far more than any of the underlying reasons for it. Once was okay, and seemed to mark a coming together in unprecedented times. Now It's nauseating.

Far worse than the social-media-ready clapping with an inane smile plastered over your fizzog to share online are the Clap Police. These are the ones gleefully 'prefecting' the behaviour of others and sending passive aggressive Whatsapp messages and anonymous notes to anyone they didn't see participate. It's on a level par with the shopping-basket police: 'are you sure your bread and milk are essential items?', and the competitive lockdown miseryitis that decrees its sufferers 'do' lockdown better than you, so nur.

Just fuck off. The lot of you.

MouthBreathingRage · 07/04/2020 10:34

the response to this crisis has been impressive

Are you living in a different UK from the rest of us? The response has been dire, too late in our lockdown, not firm enough in the message to not go out, not enough testing, not enough equipment for healthcare staff, the previous underfunding of the NHS coming home to roost, BJs personal push for Brexit meaning the NHS has already lost many staff and many more will leave when this crisis is over. It's been a shitstorm to say the least. The only country that seems to be doing less is America, and that's a pretty low stand to be compared to.

Whatisthisfuckery · 07/04/2020 10:36

Nah, won’t be doing that. I doubt the streets around me will be echoing to the sound of applause for him either. he’s none too popular where I live.

JoeExotic · 07/04/2020 10:37

There's a clap for everything these days

Would it be unreasonable of me not to 'clap for Boris' tonight?
DippyAvocado · 07/04/2020 10:37

I genuinely can't see why you would clap for Boris. For the NHS workers, it's a sign of appreciation. Most communities are likely to have someone working for the NHS living in the area who might appreciate the brief moment of recognition.

Clapping for one man in ICU? I wish him a speedy recovery, as I wish all those suffering in ICU to recover, but why would we be applauding him?

BiggerBoat1 · 07/04/2020 10:37

Everything MouthBreathingRage said.

EricaNernie · 07/04/2020 10:38

i also dont think anyone should clap for Boris, imagine if people actually turned out and Boo'd
that would be appalling.

Notahandmaid · 07/04/2020 10:38

My estate's Facebook page shared this event and I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking 'what the hell?' As others have said, don't wish anyone ill but he is a terrible politician and hasn't handled this crisis well at all. IMO Boris only seeks to serve Boris.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 07/04/2020 10:40

I mean the mans in hospital, his pregnant girlfriend is probably having an awful time with worry. Do we really need threads like this? Oh look at me I don’t want to clap but I need mumsnet to give me approval

Can’t you just say nothing? What are you hoping this thread achieves?

Biscuitsneeded · 07/04/2020 10:41

Oh gosh. I feel terribly sorry for Boris on a human level, as I would for anyone facing this right now, but I can't, just can't clap him. I mean, it's his policies that mean frontline workers don't have PPE, that we initially went down the frankly eugenics-inspired path of 'herd immunity' and we don't have enough ventilators because (in the most charitable explanation) the government 'missed an email'.
My sincere wish for Boris and his family is that he gets better. I hope he receives the best care - which I wish for all Covid-19 patients - and I especially hope he notices that some of those people putting their own lives on the line to save his are not British nationals, and that the NHS is a rather wonderful if under-funded thing.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 07/04/2020 10:41

'Are you living in a different UK from the rest of us? The response has been dire, too late in our lockdown'

Nope. I'm seeing a massive Nightingale hospital up and running within days, financial help for employees and business. The lockdown wasn't late it was instigated on scientific and medical advice, BJ didn't just pluck a date from mid air. Look it's only been over 2 weeks and people are whining about it needs to end already. If it started weeks ago it would not have lasted and therefore would not have worked.

I have many friend and family in the NHS, all have ppe, all have lots of resources. Of course there have been problems but the media have made out as if that has been the norm everywhere. Has our NHS been overwhelmed?

Crackerofdoom · 07/04/2020 10:41

If clapping did anything, why would we be doing it for him?

I can guarantee that he is getting the very best medical care. There is no way he won't get access to a ventilator.

I would prefer a minute's silence for the poor bastards who are being left in their homes to die thanks to his herd immunity idea.

koshkatt · 07/04/2020 10:41

Sad for his family and I don’t wish him ill at all but the man is still a ginormous cunt

How tasteful. Stay classy.

koshkatt · 07/04/2020 10:42

Can’t you just say nothing? What are you hoping this thread achieves?

I agree. Imagine if Carrie Symonds saw any of this crap?

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 07/04/2020 10:43

Imo, grief and sadness expressed for Princess Diana passing was sincere. I know its popular to view that period with cynicism, but being a black early twenties, slightly obnoxious conceited girl living in a rough part of London who truly didn't give a shit about most high profile people, let alone a white upper class one, Diana's death truly touched me and actually it crystalised the moment I developed a wider social conscience and a sense of collective national identity. Many people I knew who truly were pretty selfish people think drug pushers etc, felt shaken by her death. She really touched people from every culture and religion. It was a truly unusual phenomenon.

There will definitely be a similar but not quite as far reaching reaction when the Queen passes. And yes people will openly cry and it will be genuine, not least because in many people's minds she is England.

Now where it is cynical is people have hard since then to drum up the same 'nation pride' feeling at other celeb passings and events as it sells and thus now this constant clapping.

Clap if you want. Don't if you don't want to though. Yes I do agree it is now getting tedious.

x2boys · 07/04/2020 10:44

Well quite P1nk all the people at pains to point out they think he's a terrible politician ,I mean fine but the man is dangerously ill there's no need for the comments right now it's just vile .

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 07/04/2020 10:44

I would prefer a minute's silence for the poor bastards who are being left in their homes to die thanks to his herd immunity idea.

Sorry how do you figure this?

SwerfandTurf · 07/04/2020 10:44

Certainly not.

I don’t want him to die, but I care about his survival equally as much as I care about all the anonymous invisible people struggling with this terrible disease.

It’s sad that he’s not well, but being unwell doesn’t automatically ameliorate all the terrible, dishonest, self-serving, destructive things he’s done to this country and our people.
