To suggest book sharing amongstDD’s classmates

We’ve run out of books. Already! Because DD an absolute book worm. I can’t justify spending loads on new books and libraries closed.

WIBU to suggest on class watsapp group that we set up a book share system? On the understanding that books are are thoroughly cleaned, wrapped in bag and left on doorstep?

It’s a small class of 15, all nice and considerate (none of the “bitchy” glares, cliques and high drama I read about in the world of mumsnet).

Thanks

How do you clean a book?

Dozer · 04/04/2020 16:50

No. Unnecessary travel. Lots of free reading content online.

Bobbiepin · 04/04/2020 16:50

Are you cleaning every page? What happens if a child coughs whilst reading, and it's on the pages? It's a nice idea but no. Do you have prime? Kindle app on a phone or tablet and lots of free downloadable books.

FelicityBeedle · 04/04/2020 16:51

Does your local library use BorrowBox? Although I don’t see any issue if everyone is within walking distance so doorstop pickup and drop off is ok. Maybe leave the books for 48 hours until handling

Doyoumind · 04/04/2020 16:52

You can access lots of books online for nothing - especially the classics because of copyright laws.

MaryHerbert · 04/04/2020 16:53

Does your library have a free e-book lending service?

sauvignonblancplz · 04/04/2020 16:53

No!!!!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 04/04/2020 16:54

May be time to get a kindle?

CastleCrasher · 04/04/2020 16:55

I don't see how you can clean a book. I'd use Kindle, lots of free and cheap books. You don't have to own a Kindle, you can download the app onto a phone or tablet

AmelieTaylor · 04/04/2020 16:56

No

Virus lasts on paper, plastic etc

Keep your books in your house.

Use online or order more new books.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 04/04/2020 16:57

I second classics on kindle

Hannah021 · 04/04/2020 16:59

You can leave the books in their package for 3 days, so cleaning shouldnt be a problem

I'd also say if it is on your daily walk path to drop and go (no stopping and chatting), then, cant see a problem.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 04/04/2020 16:59

I would say it is too much of a hygiene risk. Have you looked up your local libary online? Our county is giving temporary online membership to ebooks etc and will issue cards once all this is over.

stargirl1701 · 04/04/2020 17:03

Usborne and Barrington Stoke have reduced all their ebooks to 99p.

What kind of library service do you have? They must have ebooks available.

Is she following any books being read online? Frank Cottrell Boyce, Piers Torday and Cressida Cowell are all currently doing this.

Have you been on the World Book Day website? They usually have free audio books.

Fuzzybumblebee · 04/04/2020 17:04

Could you order cheap from eBay just leave for a couple of days before opening

FooFighter99 · 04/04/2020 17:05

Don’t be ridiculous. Buy her a kindle.

livingthegoodlife · 04/04/2020 17:07

No.
Do you online books? Our school are uploading books to phonics bug.

Kindle?

PicsInRed · 04/04/2020 17:07

Books are fomites.
Unnecessary travel.
Unnecessary contact with persons outside household to exchange.

In 1995 I'd have suggested she make a study of Encarta.

Today she has the entire internet.

YABU.

Bringringbring12 · 04/04/2020 17:09

**but her a kindle”. Yep, just like that. Can’t justify spending on books but a kindle... bring it on!

I took a punt and messaged, three already have essentially said “great”. Picking up an Enid Blyton tomorrow (on our daily walk before heart palpatations).

As for cleaning - we have agreed books that haven’t been read for ages. Wiped with an antibacterial wipe whilst wearing gloves then popped in bag. Sorted!

I await supportive kind messages Grin

It depends. Are you somewhere where you’d walk/cycle past their houses anyway? If so, just ask them leave a book out, take the book - leave it for 48 hours, then read it.

If you’d have to drive then no, I wouldn’t.

Palavah · 04/04/2020 17:11

So long as you can drop them off within the guidelines re travel and you leave them for (72?) Hours before touching then I don't see the issue.

SuperMeerkat · 04/04/2020 17:11

The Platform on Netflix. Odd. Just odd 🤪🤔

SuperMeerkat · 04/04/2020 17:12

Aargh...posted on the wrong thread!!
