For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

There's a difference between a rainbow flag and a rainbow. Besides, if it brings joy to the children and all those passing, surely this outweighs a one off peculiar reaction.

AlunWynsKnee · 23/03/2020 12:43

Right I understand the issue you have and how the LGB are struggling with the alphabet soup.
However. The idea of being triggered by a perfectly normal kids' thing is akin to the people being triggered by words like woman and mother. Do you really want to go there?

Lolly86 · 23/03/2020 12:43

Ffs it's a rainbow for children including my own 6 year DD to have some fun with in a world that for them has completly turned upside down.
Save it for when we dont have other things to worry about...Hmm

Tanith · 23/03/2020 12:43

Don’t be so silly! It’s an initiative to keep the kids occupied - a different subject each week.

LotsaDo · 23/03/2020 12:43

The rainbow coloured flag looks somewhat different from pretty, curved, colourful paintings depicting the sky.

Yup, this ...!

TooOldForSims · 23/03/2020 12:43

Reclaim and embrace the rainbow OP 🌈.

TheWordmeister · 23/03/2020 12:44

What do you do when there is an actual rainbow in the sky?

😂😂

HarrietThePi · 23/03/2020 12:44

Time to take the meaning back I think. I hadn't heard of this but going to get my DD to draw one. Sorry I know that's not what you wanted, I've had the same feelings about the rainbow flag but this is different.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 12:44

Innocent or not, this now has negative connotations for many. Plenty of things that don't and would actually cheer everyone up. We don't know who started it or what their intentions were. Social media has all sorts on it.

Some people look for any excuse to be offended. It’s something to add a bit of sunshine to lives when all is uncertain

Aridane · 23/03/2020 12:44

Shut up OP.

Yes

It's a cute idea for children and it just means to look out for the rainbow after the storm.

Yes

Stop trying to push your agenda on a children's activity.

And yes

In fact im going to get my DC to colour in rainbows and put them in our window after this awful negative scaremongering thread of yours op!

Cohle · 23/03/2020 12:44

I hope you're hanging a snowflake in your window.

Conrad79 · 23/03/2020 12:44

op why do your feelings matter over and above everyone else’s? Did I miss the memo?

🌈 so bloody confused right now 🤷🏻‍♀️

TeacupDrama · 23/03/2020 12:45

rainbows have been hijacked as a symbol by the LGBT community etc etc in perhaps the last 15-20 years at most

for centuries they have been a weather event caused by rain and sun at the same time so have been seen even by those not of Abrahamic faiths as a sign of hope that negative and postive things can co-exist
children and many many other people just see rainbows as something in nature that is exceptionally beautiful

Maybe it is high time this was the major thing about rainbows instead of any pressure group hijacking any normal thing to represent something else so it's normal meaning is lost or misinterpreted

When kids draw/ paint rainbows they are not sending any statement about sexual politics just the message "look at my pretty drawing " hope it makes you smile

personally I am not pandering to either side; I would refuse to wear a rainbow ribbon just because we all have to support them, I would also refuse to take down innocent pictures of rainbows by kids

please don't equate kids innocent drawings with oppression

I am not saying woemn are not oppressed just that stopping kids is not the way to go about it

ravenmum · 23/03/2020 12:45

Is this a conspiracy theory? Does everyone else know what OP is talking about apart from me?

What rubbish

Findumdum1 · 23/03/2020 12:45

I am also reclaiming the rainbow - which I loved long before it became a symbol of LGB (no issue) and more recently LGBTQ+ and its silencing of women (massive issue).

This is about kids and their mental health, no need for political virtue signalling from our side as well.

SeaViewBliss · 23/03/2020 12:45

I'm not that comfortable with giving my opinion as I am not LGB but I think even the most traumatised person could separate a lovely drawn rainbow from a small child from that of one that is being displayed for LGBTQ support.

JudyCoolibar · 23/03/2020 12:46

I think people have more to worry about at the moment than rainbows in windows ffs

This.

How self-centred do you have to be to want to suppress the symbol of a movement that opposes prejudice against gay people?

Barbies97 · 23/03/2020 12:46

Your very much in the minority, so I think the issue is with you!

Does it really genuinely upset you to see a child's drawing of a rainbow, I mean really or are you professionally offended?

Wannabangbang · 23/03/2020 12:46

People are fekkin dying, if my kids want to put a bloody rainbow in their window to cheer a dogwalker up or someone out fetching groceries then they will. You don't own the rainbow

Rainbows are a natural occurrence

Cacaca · 23/03/2020 12:47

@RuffleCrow many many things have negative connotations for a wide range of people. Maybe absolutely everything should be banned? Get a grip.
