For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

How does a rainbow in the window effect who someone sleeps with? Again why is a rainbow in the sky about sexual partners? Nonsense, again it’s a rainy day symbol, just a rainbow in the sky.
And how does a rainbow in the window leave little kids vulnerable in their house? It’s like saying every time you walk in and out your house with your kids you leave them vulnerable to “predators“ (or whatever people are suggesting) who see your kids going in and out the house? What is this thread even? Seen a rainbow in the sky? Draw one colour one and put it in your window for otters to see. That’s all the idea is about clearly.

I said the world was wrong.
The world said I was wrong.
I was outvoted.

Next thing is clouds will be offensive. Can’t we see how silly this is? I love the sky. How did we turn a beautiful natural piece of artwork into a political or psychological representation that upsets people. Leave the sky, nature and space symbols alone. They are beautiful and need leaving alone so we can all enjoy them.

"Up above the streats andhouses rainbow climbing high. Every one can see you smiling over sky. Paint the whole world with a rainbow.".

Ikeasucks · 24/03/2020 11:57

lesbians have been banned and abuse has been screamed at them on Pride marches - i can understand why the rainbow flag has negative connotations to some LGBT who see Stonewall as being corrupt and homophobic. Rainbows in windows is a lively idea though.

Ikeasucks · 24/03/2020 11:58

Lovely!

PoopyPanda · 24/03/2020 12:00

@Redrosesandsunsets “ Draw one colour one and put it in your window for otters to see”

This typo made me smile Smile

I still remember Rainbow used to show short films of real people. I am still traumatised that they filmed a little girl on the loo. I was shocked I tell you. Julie or Laura her name was. This must've been over 45 years ago and I still remember it!

I also still remember Bungle saying that he or an animal could have cut their foot/paw on a broken bottle. 'OR' an animal?

Frontlineson · 24/03/2020 12:03

@Lordfrontpaw Bungle was not an animal, he was Bungle, next you'll be telling me that zippy was an amphibian!

Redrosesandsunsets · 24/03/2020 12:07

@Poopypanda yes that is funny. I like it too. Anything and everything fun or lovely makes me smile these days. We all need to keep smiling and stop taking everything so personally. It’s just a season we are in. Let’s all work together to enjoy it.

Redrosesandsunsets · 24/03/2020 12:08

Julie or Laura on the loo. What a memory. Rainbow was a fun TV program.

Online Maths website seems to be crashing this morning so I think we're going to have an impromptu Art lesson next instead.

It was just an unsophisticated geo cache idea to engage bored dc.

Why ruin their happiness

Lordfrontpaw · 24/03/2020 12:21

Bungle was a bear-thing. I always suspected that he and Geoffry were special 'friends'.

Ah, that's what you and all sane people thought woodhill. Turns out it's actually pampas grass for paedos.Shock

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 24/03/2020 12:27

How's everyone getting rainbow emojis?! I want one

GoldenKelpie · 24/03/2020 12:31

I find this a really interesting thread. At first I was astounded that someone could get offended by a drawn picture of a rainbow in the window. Then, reading responses and comments from @RuffleCrow, I could get an understanding of where each opinion came from.

I know little about the issues within LGBT, though share concerns about transgenderism being pushed at vulnerable children.

I am appalled at women only spaces being taken over by men-who-identify-as-women, at women's sport being destroyed by men-who-identify-as-women taking over. It is definitely true that lesbians are feeling disenfranchised and threatened by these men-who-identify-as-women and who also claim more victim points and whose opinions and feelings are now more valid than lesbians.

Is this where the rainbow-hatred comes from? I must admit, whenever I see the rainbow flag flown prominently by businesses in order to be perceived as 'woke', it is irritating. I'd never seen it as a symbol of oppression of women though.

I don't believe that this 'movement' to ask kids to draw rainbows and put them in their windows has been started deliberately to send a message to all women that they don't matter. Its just an idea which has gained traction because it is a genuinely lovely thing to do.

I think, OP, you are over thinking this. Its just about kids drawing pictures of rainbows to cheer everyone up at this awful, desperate time.

woodhill · 24/03/2020 12:31

@DioneTheDiabolist

Smile

It's an anti-establishment plot I tell yer

TSSDNCOP · 24/03/2020 12:34

Well, I must admit to not knowing about the rainbow related issue you raise OP. So, I have learned something new. That should be talked about more.

Meanwhile though, I thinks it's possible to disassociate the flag and the kids drawing and actual rainbows.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 24/03/2020 12:35

Nottalotta Stonewall now officially don’t believe in same-sex attraction. It’s all about ‘same-gender’ and lesbians who aren’t interested in men who identify as women are transphobic bigots. That’s what the rainbow flag symbolises for me nowadays.

PoopyPanda · 24/03/2020 12:42

🌈 Thank fuck that’s over.
