For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

The world is in crisis and you're moaning about people putting rainbows in their windows, fuck sake.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/03/2020 12:33

People are putting rainbows on their windows for children to spot when they go on walks as a way to say hello.

Conrad79 · 23/03/2020 12:34

I’ll stick a snowflake in my window, just for you op

Next to my rainbow 🌈

breakingbetter · 23/03/2020 12:34

Rainbows are also the symbol of having a baby after a miscarriage, have you spoken to them about it?

strawberrylipgloss · 23/03/2020 12:35

From Facebook:

Please don't put a rainbow in your window!
FelicityBeedle · 23/03/2020 12:35

A rainbow is not a symbol of oppression, don’t be ridiculous. If you saw one in the sky would it also make you feel like shit

fitzbilly · 23/03/2020 12:35

Yab ridiculous.

No one owns the rainbow. This is a chance to reclaim it and change it's meaning.

MargotLovedTom1 · 23/03/2020 12:35

What a load of shite. If these rainbows are something positive and happy for children then we need more of them. I associate the rainbow flag with the LGBT movement, not a simple, arched rainbow obviously painted by a little kid.

Elllicam · 23/03/2020 12:35

Next week we are doing bears is that ok?

Cocolapew · 23/03/2020 12:35

Ffs I'm GC, but it's a small thing to brighten up children's walks.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 12:36

yes i know. Yes unfortunately it's a nice symbol that has been hijacked so the meaning has changed completely for me and many other lgb people. I won't "give over" this is how it makes me feel. I'm sure your children like looking at things that don't make other people feel shit. Choose one of those instead.

I'm sorry your friends have lost their jobs, but its your interpretation of the LGBTQ+ flag, and a few others as well.

To most other people it's just a rainbow, an arc of colour that happens after during/after a rainshower. Right now we are waiting on the rainbow after the shit rainstorm we are currently in. Not everything has to be political, I am a trans supporter btw.

Kuponut · 23/03/2020 12:36

We have two in our window at the moment and will be adding more. The kids have been at home a week and are really really struggling - driving to the quietest place we could think of at stupid o clock this morning to walk the dog and get the kids out for half an hour - spotting rainbows really lifted their spirits and reconnected them with the world they've not got access to at the moment.

Sorry - I get the issues with the LGB and T movement - but right now I'm reclaiming pretty rainbows for the kids.

breakingbetter · 23/03/2020 12:36

What would of those other things be, for example?

People use all sorts of things for all sorts of, multiple, reasons.

Crazycrazylady · 23/03/2020 12:37

Honestly I'd just be glad that this is all your have to worry about at the moment.

Really.

Canadianpancake · 23/03/2020 12:37

You need to get a grip.

PrettyTricky · 23/03/2020 12:37

God, get a grip!!
If you're offended and feeling like shit about a rainbow in a window then you really need to take a bloody good look at yourself. Sheesh.

TiredMum10 · 23/03/2020 12:37

FFS boo hoo for you. You really think this is important right now. Shows how self absorbed you are.
And nobody owns a rainbow.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 12:37

Surely the OP means specific political rainbow associated with LGBTQ community, not just generic rainbows. I'm assuming.

OhClover · 23/03/2020 12:38

Do you mean a rainbow flag OP or a picture of an actual rainbow?

BossAssBitch · 23/03/2020 12:38

🌈

PoopyPanda · 23/03/2020 12:38

I'm not joining in for both the reason op stated and the religious symbolism - remember, if you disobey me again, I will wipe you all off the face of the earth. It's in really bad taste.

No, in the Bible story the rainbow was a sign that He would not flood the Earth again. I don’t even believe in it, but you have got the story wrong there.

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 23/03/2020 12:38

Oh ffs

ghostyslovesheets · 23/03/2020 12:38

If a rainbow painted by a child as a symbol of hope during this crisis makes you feel that bad you have bigger issues - I say that as a feminist

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 12:39

And no, this isn't all i have to worry about. Like everybody else i'm at risk from corona virus. But when i take my high-risk dd out for rare walks i'd rather see something that lifts my spirits rather than reminds me of women being threatened and silenced.
