For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

Sorry that it has unpleasant connotations for you, but I don't recognise a rainbow being used for purposes of oppression.

Dandelion1993 · 23/03/2020 12:39

Shut up OP.

It's a cute idea for children and it just means to look out for the rainbow after the storm.

Stop trying to push your agenda on a children's activity.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/03/2020 12:40

The rainbow coloured flag looks somewhat different from pretty, curved, colourful paintings depicting the sky.

PoopyPanda · 23/03/2020 12:40

OP, it’s not a rainbow flag. It’s a rainbow. Same colours, different symbol. Let people enjoy images of a natural phenomenon. If it “makes you feel like shit” then to see a picture of a natural phenomenon, that’s your responsibility to manage.

Cacaca · 23/03/2020 12:40

I think it’s fairly obvious that these are rainbows drawn by children. My child is not yet old enough but I saw a couple of houses yesterday and figured out pretty quickly it was children trying to spread some happiness and joy. Don’t take that away from them. Yes the rainbow flag is associated with the lgbt community (apologies if this is not the correct terminology) but not for their exclusive use. Children love rainbows so let them draw and display them.

TiredMum10 · 23/03/2020 12:40

And no my child drawing rainbows isnt responsible for how you feel. If you feel shit then that's your own problem. Completely self absorbed to think you have any claim to the rainbow.

Yesterdayforgotten · 23/03/2020 12:40

How awful of you op! It is a lovely innocent idea for children and puts a smile on peoples face! Enough evil in the world so please do not spoil the rainbow, as another pp said you do not own it! Glass half full and not half empty, please aee the positive in this!!

AutumnRose1 · 23/03/2020 12:40

I saw a few of these on my walk and couldn’t figure out why.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 23/03/2020 12:40

🎵Paint the whole world with a rainbow 🎵.
I had no idea that the rainbow was like a union jack flag for triggering folk.

user1483387154 · 23/03/2020 12:40

ffs seriously??!!!

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 23/03/2020 12:40

Although I sympathise with the complete shit storm that is currently ripping apart LGBT groups, and I'm a GC feminist, the DCs aren't drawing in support of Stonewall. They're drawing something simple, bright and easy to recognise.
You don't need to politicise this and if seeing a rainbow is so triggering for you then I hope you can find support or some respite from your campaigning.
If DCs have to consider everyone's feelings there will be nothing that meets everyone's approval.

PotholePalace · 23/03/2020 12:41

Reclaim the rainbow! It's a symbol for people on the autism spectrum as well, so a good thing generally.

marfisa · 23/03/2020 12:41

Biscuit Biscuit Biscuit

Here, have a whole pile of biscuits, OP.

Banning kids' rainbow pictures during a pandemic is extreme even for MN.

CatBatCat · 23/03/2020 12:41

What do you do when there is an actual rainbow in the sky?

Yesterdayforgotten · 23/03/2020 12:41

Oh and rainbows do lift most people spirits so you are part of a minority here. Maybe your symbol of choice would offend someone. YABU!

glueandstick · 23/03/2020 12:42

Ah the good old days on mumsnet.

ViciousJackdaw · 23/03/2020 12:42

Over the last week, we have had:
'Boden is closed, waaaah!'
'My extended release tablets say retard on them. Waaah!'
'An elderly woman's delivery has the code DOA on nit. Waaah!'

and today, we have:
'Rainbows are for GAY PEOPLE, not children. Waaah!'

As far as I know, Amazon are still delivering grips.

Reginabambina · 23/03/2020 12:42

In our area we’re doing teddy bear hunts (I.e. stick a bear in your window)

TheWordmeister · 23/03/2020 12:42

Ffs. Really? What a load of self-centred shite.

Yes unfortunately it's a nice symbol that has been hijacked. Yes, by the LGB community, and you don’t own it.

If kids want to put rainbows in their windows for whatever reason, good for them.

it's a nice symbol that has been hijacked so the meaning has changed completely for me and many other lgb people.
I am mildly curious. Who do you think has hijacked it, how, and why are you suggesting that others let them hijack it by preventing people from using it in a positive manner?

Etinox · 23/03/2020 12:42

Behave.

Givemestrengthorgin · 23/03/2020 12:43

This has made me really angry. It's a rainbow...something that has captured children's imaginations for generations. How dare you try to make me feel bad about my children's drawings...its unfortunate it has negative connotations to some people but that's not all it symbolises and no one has a claim over it and what it means. We will be happily continuing with our rainbow pictures.

marfisa · 23/03/2020 12:43

You hate rainbows, don't put any rainbows on your house. There, job done.

At least something today has made me laugh. Grin

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 23/03/2020 12:43

Rod , Jane and Freddy should be publicly flogged the bastards
