Will you change what companies you support based on how they are currently reacting?

I was wondering if how companies have reacted will encourage you to use or not use their services in the future.

Have you seen anything that would make you deliberately chose to support a business in the future?

Locally a cafe has reacted in a way i didnt expect and i now wonder if i will support them in the future? The same with some highly thought of zoos that have been stayed open and shot down anyone that questioned them.

The cafe me has posted varying rants about how annoyed they are that the vulnerable don't self isolate so they could carry on as normal, started selling home made sanitizer thats coronavirus proof but has no alcohol in it, and has set up picnic tables and is actively encouraged people to use picnic benches outside the cafe rather than taking away (including a self isolating table!)

absolutely will change who I shop with. Current shit list includes Wilko, Waterstones, Cineworld, Zara,
Nice list include Ikea who sent measuring tapes to NHS, Home bargains and all the others supporting their staff instead of laying them off, brewdog making sanitiser for free, and all local shops that aren't price gouging just because they can.
Caitlin Moran is compiling a list on twitter.

Onefliesoverthecuckoosnest · 23/03/2020 11:31

Yes I agree, I am following and making note both of how large companies treat their staff and smaller companies too.

Hugt · 23/03/2020 11:31

Im actually impressed by McDonald's response which is not something id usually say! I wonder what support their staff have though

I can see that your specific examples might be annoying, but on the whole I have to say it's unfair.

Yes, people are acting irrationally and in some cases selfishly. However these are extraordinary times and advice is changing incredibly quickly. It's not so very long since the government themselves were advocating those very measures.

Most people aren't innately able to handle a global pandemic sensibly and wisely. Even those who are are in a state of disbelief. I was able to shut down our office operations within 24h, review our cashflow and reserves, and mobilise staff to handle the situation very quickly.

It's still unnerving, upsetting and a shock to the system. So I'm prepared to given those who didn't have those options easily at their fingertips a break to be honest, rather than placing a black mark against them for life.

KenDodd · 23/03/2020 11:36

I will never fly Easy Jet again or use one of their companies.

Asking for government (tax payers) money the day before they send out a dividend payment of 170 MILLION POUNDS to it's shareholders. Apparently Stelios got 60 million. This payment was made late Friday.

shookennotstirred · 23/03/2020 11:39

TK Maxx has given away all of the food they had in the stores and are paying its staff I believe.

KenDodd · 23/03/2020 11:39

Actually anybody know of a petition I can sign asking drug companies who develop a vaccine to this NOT to patent it and to make the recipe available freely to other licenced drug companies?

Hugt · 23/03/2020 11:40

@thecatsthecats

I totally understand that its a horrible time. Some of my local cafes and pubs have really risen to the occasion and shown real community spirit. I will also remember those business for the positive Things

What's wrong with Cineworld - they shut down cinemas comparatively early on.

Fuss · 23/03/2020 11:42

Absolutely.
There are several local businesses I'll never use again due to price hiking and one trying to flog face masks from a pack of 50 at £4.99 each.

amymel2016 · 23/03/2020 11:43

I absolutely will, all of Arcadia are now out for me as are Debenhams, House of Fraser, Zara, Waterstones, Virgin and many others.

I’m trying to go to Morrison’s more as they’ve been brilliant to their smaller suppliers.

crazydiamond222 · 23/03/2020 11:43

H&M are using their supply chain to manufacture protective gear for hospitals

Applejaxx · 23/03/2020 11:44

Virgin, Britannia Hotels, Wilko's and Waterstones are now off limits as far as im concerned. Shame really as I love a browse around Waterstones, but they are disgrace in how they are treating their staff.

Britannia Hotels are generally doss houses anyway, but still.

Iwantacookie · 23/03/2020 11:44

Richard Branson has disgusted me with his attitude towards his planes.
Shame it's the only decent internet we can get other wise ide be leaving them too.

middleager · 23/03/2020 11:44

Yes, I'm taking note.
Wetherspoons, Virgin, Topshop, Boundary Mill.

The organisers of Crufts, Cheltenham and even the bloody Stereophonics for playing a massive stadium gig in Cardiff just last week.

Applejaxx · 23/03/2020 11:45

Oh yes, and Arcadia. We all knew that Philip Green is a cunt anyway though didn't we? Can't say im surprised by his behavour.

AgentProvocateur · 23/03/2020 11:46

Wetherspoons, Virgin and Britannia Hotels.

Applejaxx · 23/03/2020 11:48

Oh and my local council have pissed me off by letting their staff work from home but insisting that all their contractors go out into strangers homes to do non essential maintenance.

tttigress · 23/03/2020 11:48

Macdonald's is actually a good company, even though it doesn't get much support (due to snobbery).

Saucery · 23/03/2020 11:50

Several local cafes for pushing Mothers Day and saying it was ok because they’d moved the tables apart a bit.
Comedy group Foil, Arms And Hogg for cancelling their Irish shows (because they had to) but not their British ones.
Never went in Wetherspoons anyway but I’ll be reminding anyone I know how shit and dangerous their reaction was.

On the plus side my local Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are doing their absolute best so hats off to them. And a local farm shop which we’d started using occasionally. Last week they coped with many, many more customers than usual in a sensible, calm manner and the atmosphere was muted but polite and friendly. I will definitely be going out of my way to give them my continued business after all this.

Countrygirl38 · 23/03/2020 11:54

Yes absolutely. I will not support companies that haven't been supportive or their employees.

A very expensive hotel that is local to me is now housing all the local homeless people and feeding them etc. I will forever think kindly towards this hotel from now on.

Ninkanink · 23/03/2020 11:55

Yes.

We will be doing much more shopping with Home Bargains because of the responsible and genuinely kind way they approached it. McDonalds will be getting our regular custom (not that often), plus a bit extra - no hardship, I love a burger and fries! TK Maxx and Home sense will get more of our custom (already shop with them quite a bit). IKEA and Brewdog from above list, too.

Virgin already on our boycott list and will remain on it.

M&S and Waitrose too because they told women straight out that they have nothing but contempt for us and do not consider our rights and protections and those of young women and girls important.

Not impressed with Waterstones but that’s fine, I can get my books elsewhere. Wow easy jet are on the shitlist too then (already refuse to use Ryanair).

I’ve not been out and about to see how local businesses have approached things.

Ninkanink · 23/03/2020 11:56

Oh yes, Arcadia! That’s not difficult though.

Herja · 23/03/2020 12:02

As soon as it's reasonable for me to get new wiring done (so asap after all this) I will be swapping to anyone but virgin for my internet.
