Will you change what companies you support based on how they are currently reacting?

Hugt · 23/03/2020 11:23

I was wondering if how companies have reacted will encourage you to use or not use their services in the future.

Have you seen anything that would make you deliberately chose to support a business in the future?

Locally a cafe has reacted in a way i didnt expect and i now wonder if i will support them in the future? The same with some highly thought of zoos that have been stayed open and shot down anyone that questioned them.

The cafe me has posted varying rants about how annoyed they are that the vulnerable don't self isolate so they could carry on as normal, started selling home made sanitizer thats coronavirus proof but has no alcohol in it, and has set up picnic tables and is actively encouraged people to use picnic benches outside the cafe rather than taking away (including a self isolating table!)

I'd love to change my loyalty based on recent events. However turns out the companies I was already boycotting for other reasons are the ones that have acted like arseholes, and the ones that I discovered through decent service are the ones that have stepped up to the challenge.

PlugholePencil · 23/03/2020 13:32

@chockaholic72 yes. I’ve never been in there before because the men who work there are very intimidating.
My husband has, been served ok.
I’m certain that was the reason why.

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/03/2020 13:36

but I've already stated in this post they were prepared to let my bunny die

Unless I've misread something your only other post on this thread doesn't mention PAH at all?

kimlo · 23/03/2020 13:41

@AdobeWanKenobi yes they do have vets in them. And actually I have nothing against the vets, my local vets 4 pets has has social distancing policys in place for a good couple of weeks and I have nothing against the vets being classed as keyworkers.

The staff in the actual pets at home are certainly not keyworkers, and at a time when we should be keeping the numbers of children at school down to a minimum. If they must stay open don't try to use the school places, except that you may loose some staff due to childcare.

OublietteBravo · 23/03/2020 13:49

@KenDodd

Actually anybody know of a petition I can sign asking drug companies who develop a vaccine to this NOT to patent it and to make the recipe available freely to other licenced drug companies?

It would make more sense for the drug companies to patent it and license it to everyone else for free (there is no obligation to charge money when granting a licence). Because otherwise someone unscrupulous will patent it and cause problems. In any case, there are compulsory licensing laws in most countries relating to situations like this (they’ve already been invoked in Israel for certain anti-virals).

florentina1 · 23/03/2020 13:55

Can I ask what Wilko has done wrong?

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 23/03/2020 13:59

Wilkos has written to the government to ask they are classed as an essential shop as they sell medicine and food.
I don't know if theres other reasons why, but that is my reason. Profits before people

BeansOnToast4T · 23/03/2020 14:02

Definitely. I will remember which companies treat their staff well and which ones don't.

DGRossetti · 23/03/2020 14:03

Wilkos has written to the government to ask they are classed as an essential shop as they sell medicine and food.

news like that does nothing to dispel the feeling that it's amateur hour in HMG ...

DimplesToadfoot · 23/03/2020 14:03

@AdobeWanKenobi

Unless I've misread something your only other post on this thread doesn't mention PAH at all?

That's right it doesn't, I didn't want to name names as there are franchises within the same veterinary group. One of which did see me, but as you were prepared to say how useful these vets inside Pets at Home are, I decided to counter with how they weren't and were indeed prepared to let animals die. Knowing how I was treated are you still prepared to defend them?

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 23/03/2020 14:05

Costa are closing their stores and still paying their staff.

Iwantacookie · 23/03/2020 14:11

@hotdog I thought Richard Branson still owned it though? I dont want to give him anymore of my money because of the way hes treated his airline staff. Also virgin media customer service is appalling.

HillAreas · 23/03/2020 14:19

As much as I’ve been outraged by the way some companies have treated their staff, I also want those hundreds of thousands of staff to still have jobs so I won’t be boycotting anyone and contributing to major employers going under.*
Now isn’t the time for moral outrage, we just need to get through this thing.
Whatever the price for employers stupidity and callousness is, I do not want their staff to pay it.

*not that anyone will notice because I’m 20 weeks pregnant and won’t be leaving the house until julember 2024 approximately, the way things are developing Sad

TolpuddleFarter · 23/03/2020 14:23

Need to give a shout out to Premier Inn. We had a non-flexible booking with them, and they have allowed us to cancel and get our money back. I will be rewarding them with our loyalty when we get out of this situation.

Love Home Bargains, so glad they have come out well out of this!

Our local butchers and green grocers are really stepping up round my area, and I will be using them rather than the big supermarkets.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2020 14:28

"Timpsons. Always been great. They have closed from today with all staff on full pay. I have always been impressed with their ethos - everyone gets a day off for their birthday, they employ ex prisoners. Marvellous, inspirational leadership"

👏🏼 for Timpsons
let's support them, afterwards

BloggersNetwork · 23/03/2020 14:30

Yes 100%

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/03/2020 14:32

@DimplesToadfoot

Knowing how I was treated are you still prepared to defend them?

Yes. Because.

there are franchises within the same veterinary group

You've had a bad experience, thats fair enough. But one franchise doesn't represent an entire company. I had a bad experience in Subway once. I wouldn't then boycott all Subways because one franchisee was a dick.

I cant read your mind. You posted you'd had a bad experience with a vet. That could have been any one of thousands.

KenDodd · 23/03/2020 14:36

@OublietteBravo

Thank you.
I was worried when I heard about Trump trying to buy German researchers to create an American's only vaccine.
I would hate a drug company to charge a ransom price on any treatment or vaccines while people are dying. I really don't trust (some) of the corporate world not to see this as a huge money spinner.

It's up to us as individuals to do our bit as well. I made a rule for myself that if I get paid, they get paid. So things like exercise classes and children's clubs, I'm still paying for even though I'm not using.

minsmum · 23/03/2020 14:52

My local small Sainsbury shop, went in last night to get a loaf, they didn't have much as you can imagine. I am in the vulnerable group, not self isolating j u st being careful. The manager gave me his number so that I can phone and check if they have what I need before going in, which is very kind

DimplesToadfoot · 23/03/2020 15:01

@AdobeWanKenobi

Absolutely nowhere have I stated that I would be boycotting other vets, just my old one, please don't twist what I've put. My old vets just so happened to be inside Pets at Home. I repeat Pets at Home are not offering the service you say they are, you spoke for all, I only spoke of the One I used .. its really quite simple

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/03/2020 15:13

@DimplesToadfoot
And I'm defending my own PAH who stock medicine, food for exotic animals etc.

And again, not a mind reader. Your initial post was exceptionally vague and didn't even mention PAH. My first comment on here wasn't even in reply to you. You jumped on it like I should have half a clue what you were going on about.

I repeat Pets at Home are not offering the service you say they are

And I repeat. They are offering medicines, topical treatments that can be bought without the need to bother vets, frozen and live foods for exotic animals etc.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a vet in PAH franchise but you are still trying to tar them all with the same brush. A good many PAH don't even have vets in them. You asked me to defend PAH vets:

you were prepared to say how useful these vets inside Pets at Home are, I decided to counter with how they weren't and were indeed prepared to let animals die. Knowing how I was treated are you still prepared to defend them?

And I did.

its really quite simple

With you, it really isn't. Hence I'm out.

DoubleAction · 23/03/2020 15:21

Lots of small businesses here selling essentials like Calpol, other pain killers, loo roll etc at hugely inflated prices. I will remember them.

TDogsInHats · 23/03/2020 15:26

I'm wondering what Waterstones have done wrong.
Also

It seems counter intuitive to not shop in certain stores as this will penalise the already massively stressed workforce.Sad

MulticolourMophead · 23/03/2020 15:34

A local company managed to get hold of a large batch of toilet rolls, and went round giving them free to the elderly and vulnerable, lovely people.

A local restaurant was due to open yesterday for Mother's Day afternoon tea, and instead packed the pre-booked food up for takeaways or alternatively people could have a voucher for a future booking, so no one lost out. They've also asked on FB whether people would be up for meals delivered. Which has gone down well. I'll support them later on.

Our local boutique cinema closed before the government closures, and locals are supporting them by buying vouchers and membership for when we can go again. I've got a voucher coming in the post, as we can order online.

DimplesToadfoot · 23/03/2020 15:39

@AdobeWanKenobi

Hence I'm out.

Thank God for small mercies. :-) I hope I never have the misfortune of coming across you again :-)

Have a good day
