Will you change what companies you support based on how they are currently reacting?

I was wondering if how companies have reacted will encourage you to use or not use their services in the future.

Have you seen anything that would make you deliberately chose to support a business in the future?

Locally a cafe has reacted in a way i didnt expect and i now wonder if i will support them in the future? The same with some highly thought of zoos that have been stayed open and shot down anyone that questioned them.

The cafe me has posted varying rants about how annoyed they are that the vulnerable don't self isolate so they could carry on as normal, started selling home made sanitizer thats coronavirus proof but has no alcohol in it, and has set up picnic tables and is actively encouraged people to use picnic benches outside the cafe rather than taking away (including a self isolating table!)

My own small company. They could absolutely fucking have paid us as staff but they let us go immediately and the directors carried on trying to run the company themselves.
I saw all the finances so I know this for fact and tried to reason with them.

I am now feverishly trying to find any new job that will take me on because even though my company have said they want me back once this has all blown over it's disgusting, they were always mean and never paid for anything but this is far worse than anything they've done before. They have literally put actual profits above the few people they employ and the people who stay late are loyal etc for years. I told them how they could break even for a few months and they just brushed it off. Then the next day, bye bye everyone.

I had to recommend the 80% pay scheme to at least have that but I don't have a lot of faith I'll even get that right now despite them saying they would . They already took their huge earnings in January so also not like they were going to go hungry anytime soon. I've run my own businesses as well before and I know there is zero reason other than greed behind their actions.

@cakemeupbeforeyougogo

Have you thought that maybe no one is replying to your emails and calls because they are incredibly short staffed? I work in a similar industry and we have to go in to the office. We are down to 30% staff.

Customer's are rude. Most calls and emails are non essential but people are taking care of "life admin" whilst stuck at home. Some are just calling to have a chat because they are lonely.

In the mean time, me and my colleagues are trying our best. We are scared like everyone else but don't have the luxury of WFH like management.

My husband is a key worker. I have 2 very young kids. Child care is a nightmare. I think people forget there is another person on the end of the phone. People have become self centred.

What happened to #bekind?

Morrison's. Had Perspex shields up for their checkout staff very quickly

I'm a Tesco employee and they sent home all vulnerable staff on full pay before the 80% thing was announced.
They've said sick pay levels and absence trigger levels won't apply for absence related to self isolating.
They were among the first to announce an nhs staff hour and handed out bouquets of flowers during the first.
They've secured free city centre parking where I work (officebase), knocked 50% off the price of the canteen, sent home everyone who can work from home and anyone who can't will receive a 10% bonus.

I'm not on twitter but would love to see caitlin morans list?

I am but haven't looked at her list yet.

I'm willing to bet she hasn't suggested taking down the Times online paywall for the duration. She's written an article in the past saying why she's very keen indeed on that.

The Times is one thing I will be boycotting (and DH and I love the crossword and enjoy lots of the writing). We've always taken that and the Guardian (again, the crossword).
Not only have the Times not taken down their paywall during this time, there was a tweet from Melanie Reid (one of their journalists) suggesting people buy a subscription to help pass the time in lockdown. Another gave a link to one of her articles - "to cheer people up" - which let you read two paragraphs, then led you to advice on how to pay for the subscription.

I could do without the self-serving advertising under the guise of "helping".

We could certainly afford the subscription and were considering getting it since we can't get a regular crossword paper Smile
But they won't get a penny now.

Have signed up for the voluntary payment for the oneline Guardian.

Realistically though, will anyone actually boycott anywhere?

Some will. The majority won't. I keep laughing at how many people who adore wetherspoons (I've got no idea why) are now posting on FB to boycott them. I can guarantee, the second wetherspoons reopens, they will all be back in there celebrating. No doubt saying the ceo is amazing for taking his staff back on. Hmm

People are still using the range despite what they've done. People will still fly easyjet because they are amongst the cheapest, and will still fly virgin for a bit of comfort on a long flight. People will still use sports direct because they provide cheap sports clothing.

Nothing will change, and companies know that. Hence why they don't give a shit either.

Already I have decided to support my local restaurant die to the way they have gone above and beyond to look after their staff, aldi will be my shop of choice for the sane reason also I will never step food in weatherspoons again

Cheesypea · 28/03/2020 10:14

My corner shop has been great. Their prices are the same and their getting more fresh stuff in. Premier inn initiated a refund on my booking.
