Will you change what companies you support based on how they are currently reacting?

I was wondering if how companies have reacted will encourage you to use or not use their services in the future.

Have you seen anything that would make you deliberately chose to support a business in the future?

Locally a cafe has reacted in a way i didnt expect and i now wonder if i will support them in the future? The same with some highly thought of zoos that have been stayed open and shot down anyone that questioned them.

The cafe me has posted varying rants about how annoyed they are that the vulnerable don't self isolate so they could carry on as normal, started selling home made sanitizer thats coronavirus proof but has no alcohol in it, and has set up picnic tables and is actively encouraged people to use picnic benches outside the cafe rather than taking away (including a self isolating table!)

Top Shop is dead to me
The Standard chain of hotels, owner worth $700 million dollars have laid all their staff off, not a penny. Bastards.

kimlo · 23/03/2020 13:02

and starbucks were already getting nothing from me ever again, but if it wasn't for that I would have added them to the list.

DoubleAction · 23/03/2020 13:04

OP my son has worked at McDonalds since the summer and I've said all along they are an excellent employer, really decent with staff. I hope they lose the "you'll end up working at McDonalds" stigma

Frenchw1fe · 23/03/2020 13:04

Can’t stand Richard Branson. Never used Virgin, never will.

DoubleAction · 23/03/2020 13:05

Secret Escapes. Sending me emails to remind me that bookings are non-refundable when I hadn't even asked

MrsKingfisher · 23/03/2020 13:07

Anything to do with Philip Green I will never touch, M&S keeping their staff in the clothing dept working 'business as usual' no protective measures in place and also Next. These companies should be setting the standards and they can afford to close and pay their employees. Profits over people does not sit well with me.

Roselilly36 · 23/03/2020 13:08

I will never book with Ryanair again.

PatchworkElmer · 23/03/2020 13:09

Yep, seriously questioning loyalty to our local zoo, who have only just shut.

Conversely, I have gone out of my way to support responsible business- local pub shut several days before the guidance, so I have placed a food order, etc.

thenightfury · 23/03/2020 13:09

Stuffofawesome. Add Tesco to your good list! Not seen much publicity on it but their staff are being paid in full for the 2 weeks isolation and the 12 weeks if they're vunerable. Those still working through this are being paid 10% extra for every hour worked!

chockaholic72 · 23/03/2020 13:09

@PlugholePencil They refused to serve you because you were female?! That's shocking.

AlunWynsKnee · 23/03/2020 13:10

Sainsbury's are going to have to go some to keep me as a customer when it's time to renew my delivery pass.
The pub that have been delivering locally will be somewhere I will go for lunch once this is over.

PatchworkElmer · 23/03/2020 13:10

@Iwalkinmyclothing I’m also going to think differently about several friends after this is over. Some people have shown themselves to be monumentally selfish, entitled idiots.

AdobeWanKenobi · 23/03/2020 13:11

pets at home. Getting nothing from me ever again

Many contain vets and provide food for pets that you cant get anywhere else such as live crickets and frozen mice as well as pet medicines. They absolutely have an important role at the moment.

DoubleAction · 23/03/2020 13:12

A local pub stayed open until they were forced to close and then sold off the surplus beer with proceeds to charity....if you queued up with your own container.

They tried, but?

nevermorelenore · 23/03/2020 13:12

The local soft play who apparently thought putting down a bit of extra zoflora would be enough. They've finally shut thank goodness.

Have tried to avoid Spoons for a while due to the Brexit crap but will definitely never use again.

Going to use my local farm shop a lot more. They've been great! Also my small local Tesco which has been pretty well stocked compared to the big shops.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2020 13:12

Yes !

I'd boycott any company who have behaved irresponsibly wrt social distancing
or who haven't paid their staff when they had the means to do so

I am especially watching all the big firms whose goods or service I normally use

Fortunately / surprisingly, everywhere in my village has been very responsible
and workers anyway receive full pay for 6 weeks, then 80% (Germany)

As soon as restrictions are lifted and the govt encourages us to resume normal life,
I will be showing support to local small businesses:

daily buying at the farm shop, daily eating at my fav restaurants, daily coffee at the gym, going to the masseuse, having hair done more often

heartsonacake · 23/03/2020 13:12

McDonalds is a great company to work for. They’re paying everyone their full wage until the 80% government help kicks in.

Not only that, but they’re distributing all their food into their local communities.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2020 13:13

Good for Maccy D ! 👏🏼

maybemu · 23/03/2020 13:14

Specsavers- they have asked people to work for free when the bosses make a lot of money.
Top shop etc - laid off lots of staff

FloconDeNeige · 23/03/2020 13:16

Jhoots pharmacies. They hiked the price of calpol to £19.99 a bottle. An MP in Birmingham has reported them.

Disappointed with Branson. Philip Green, not so much; he’s the modern day Rackmann of the business world.

HereTodayHereTomorrow · 23/03/2020 13:17

Petsathome are on my hit list. Insisting all staff have to be in and telling schools they have to have their children because they’re ‘key workers’. There was also an ‘any quieries please contact legal@petsathome’
They could run as vets only, they could have skeleton staff, there are plenty of options that don’t involve trying to intimidate schools and encouraging the spread of the virus!

loobyloo1234 · 23/03/2020 13:20

Im already keeping lists. I will never fly Virgin, drink in Wetherspoons, nor shop in Topshop ever again. What don't these fat cats understand? People will die because of their decisions the last month. I despair anyone that has anything to do with any business that has let down its workers and their customers in the most dire of need

DimplesToadfoot · 23/03/2020 13:22

@AdobeWanKenobi

They might have an important role, but I've already stated in this post they were prepared to let my bunny die ... so they aren't exactly fulfilling that role

catsmother · 23/03/2020 13:25

Absolutely.

This is like a nationwide version of 'finding out who your friends' are when the chips are down.

As a pp said, I've been disgusted by the irresponsible, selfish and stupid behaviour of some I know. Ignorance really isn't a defence because unless you've been living in a cave, there's no one unaware of at least something monumental taking place and we should all make it our business to find out how to behave responsibly on a regular basis.

So far as business is concerned then yes, I think many will find people have very long memories. Richard Branson disgusts me. The grasping little shit had already sued the NHS remember? Ditto Wetherspoons' boss who minimised the risk and encouraged people into his premises until forced to shut. And I will be sure to research who else behaved in similar fashion.... speaking of which, Philip fucking Green is another one
Rich beyond belief, dodgy as hell, and threw his employees to the wolves conveniently just before government support was announced.

At a local level, so many small businesses have been responsible and generous, at no small cost to the owners. A local Indian takeaway is offering a free meal every day for the next three weeks to NHS workers in recognition of what they do and how so many are struggling to get/prepare food. Many others (all types of company) have dropped delivery charges to get goods to people (observing safe distancing).

stopwindingeachotherup · 23/03/2020 13:25

Timpsons. Always been great. They have closed from today with all staff on full pay. I have always been impressed with their ethos - everyone gets a day off for their birthday, they employ ex prisoners. Marvellous, inspirational leadership
