Will you change what companies you support based on how they are currently reacting?

I was wondering if how companies have reacted will encourage you to use or not use their services in the future.

Have you seen anything that would make you deliberately chose to support a business in the future?

Locally a cafe has reacted in a way i didnt expect and i now wonder if i will support them in the future? The same with some highly thought of zoos that have been stayed open and shot down anyone that questioned them.

The cafe me has posted varying rants about how annoyed they are that the vulnerable don't self isolate so they could carry on as normal, started selling home made sanitizer thats coronavirus proof but has no alcohol in it, and has set up picnic tables and is actively encouraged people to use picnic benches outside the cafe rather than taking away (including a self isolating table!)

I work for Wilko and have just informed them that as my 84 year old disabled mother lives with me and I am her carer I will not be back in to work until boris lifts the restrictions. I will get nothing from them. No paid dependants leave or the 80% that the government is paying as they are staying open.
They would be quite happy for me to be responsible for killing my mother by bringing the virus home as long as they can still make some money.
They have done nothing to minimise the risks apart from a bottle of hand wash by the lock in and wipe down the doors a few times. No markings on the floor to stand back, trolleys still in use, still taking cash etc

absolutely will change who I shop with. Current shit list includes Wilko, Waterstones, Cineworld, Zara,
Nice list include Ikea who sent measuring tapes to NHS, Home bargains and all the others supporting their staff instead of laying them off, brewdog making sanitiser for free, and all local shops that aren't price gouging just because they can.
Caitlin Moran is compiling a list on twitter.

I just thought you should know that brewdog over the course of a week the cut 10 hours then another 18 hours of their shifts then a couple of days later sacked all of their staff still on probation (primarily bar staff with no way to have a monetary cushion) with no warning and immediate effect days before the government offered the 80% wage grant. After that they started producing the sanatizer.

I have not yet been able to find out if they have rehired and applied for the grant for their staff.

Anyway they are definitely on my shitlist!

ssd · 27/03/2020 12:24

I'm impressed with tesco. Didn't expect to be.

I already didn't use businesses clearly run by arseholes (Wetherspoons being a prime example despite it being my nearest pub) but I can't in good conscience get on with Waterstone's any more. There are so many great indie bookshops who do mail order, it's not like they're the only show in town. I already felt bad using a bookstore with such a monopoly.

DenimDrift · 27/03/2020 12:32

@chuck7

B&Q is essential items via click and collect in the car park. Working well

I’m a hardware manager so it’s essentially my stock only. Fuses/lightbulbs/nails/repair items. Roofing/cement/builders sand/plumbing

B&Q listened to their staff have provided PPE.

ssd · 27/03/2020 12:37

I'm not on twitter but would love to see caitlin morans list?

Barbies97 · 27/03/2020 19:26

@Ginkypig I normally love Wilko, but what have they done? They may be on my never use again list!

strawberrylipgloss · 27/03/2020 19:43

I will be boycotting Sports Direct. Fucking awful management

Ginkypig · 27/03/2020 19:56

Sorry barbie I was replying to the post I highlighted, because I wanted to let them know about brewdog but I didn't write it.

but this post is just a few back if you want to know about wilkos

Barbies97 · 27/03/2020 20:33

@Ginkypig they won't get my custom ever again! Shame on them!

Devlesko · 27/03/2020 20:37

Yes, I would but don't use any of them anyway.
But I'd vote with my feet.

Stuffofawesome · 27/03/2020 21:34

Airparks called me today and offered voucher valid for 18 months for car parking fee at airport. I had t take. Out cancellation insurance so thought I had lost the money. On my good list

VivaLeBeaver · 27/03/2020 23:22

David Lloyd have gone above and beyond for their staff. Paying them 100% of wages for at least next two months. And basing it on a monthly average over last 12 months, not just contracted hours as they know a lot of staff do a lot of overtime.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/03/2020 01:44

I will never set foot in a Sainsburys store ever again My Friend is doing my shopping from Aldi and bringing it to me When normality resumes, she'll take me and bring me home
I'm disabled( receive flu jab) because of CP so cannot stand and wait to go in but am physically healthy otherwise so not in shielding group
Obviously it's right the shielding group take priority but Sainsburys have changed the goalposts recently I hate injustice

Bezalelle · 28/03/2020 05:34

I'm so pleased to see this thread, and will be boycotting the companies on the shit list when all this is over.

Within capitalism, we are given incredible powers as customers, and I really hope we use it to hold firms accountable.

Womenwotlunch · 28/03/2020 06:33

I will be boycotting some of the local shops in my area. One of them sold a single roll of toilet paper for £1:50.

BillywilliamV · 28/03/2020 06:45

Yeah, let's put all these companies out of business. That 'ok serve all the bastards that are employed by them right!

saraclara · 28/03/2020 07:04

Exactly @BillywilliamV

The people who stand to lose most from people 'punishing' these businesses, are their employees. Many of them already on low pay.
The people at the top have a lovely big fat buffer of fancy mansions and nice big bank balances. When they start to lose profits they'll just sack that nice young single mum across the road.

StripyOrangeCat · 28/03/2020 07:37

I bloody wont shop in boots again, if I can’t buy makeup .
I need to go to work, I need makeup to look vaguely human, and if I need dye for my roots, I want that too.
I hope it’s scare mongering to say I can’t buy make up

Duvetday8 · 28/03/2020 08:38

Hp- I use their instant ink and they refused to go me out when needed to use more pages than usual due to now having to homeschool
Gousto- screwed over loyal customers in the rush to take on new people

DGRossetti · 28/03/2020 08:46

Yeah, let's put all these companies out of business. That 'ok serve all the bastards that are employed by them right!

But it's ebb and flow ... company As loss in the marketplace is company Bs opportunity. Like with the ripoff merchants Brighthouse. If they really were fulfilling a need, then their disappearing up their own tailpipe doesn't make the need go away. There's an opening for another company. That will need staff. It's sort of how capitalism was meant to work. However we seem to have drifted into a world where some companies aren't "allowed to fail". Which is really socialism at the Gentlemans club.

saraclara · 28/03/2020 08:57

I bloody wont shop in boots again, if I can’t buy makeup

OMG!!! HOW WILL YOU COPE?

FFS. A company takes care of its employees by running a skeleton staff, prioritising medical need. And that's putting them on your shitlist?

I do hope this is a wind up.
