Hmm? Well AM I?

If someone tells me not to click on the FUCKING thread in question, I think I will explode. Racism should have no place on Mumsnet.

IcingontheCake, I really think that what this guy said was complete rubbish. Please don't believe that this is what London is like, at all.

I've lived in Hackney for over 20 years, in various different areas, and I've spent lots of time in different part of London, north, south and east, and I've never ever had any problems on account of being white.

What I have had, lots and lots, is other white people making racist remarks to me in the full expectation that I will agree with them because I am white. I don't, I always make a point of telling them where to get off, but it really shocks me that even now in multi-cultural London that this still happens.

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:10

And although there is a lot of crime in Hackney, it seems (certainly from reading the Hackney Gazette!) that the majority of the victims are black, not white.

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:18

So you think it is ok that this man who lived in this certain place in London couldn't walk to the shops without fear for his life because of rasism? Meaning he had to then move because people had issues about him having white skin?

Lets reverse the situation. Say i had told you we bought a car off a black man who lived on the Isle of Wight and the man had told us he used to live in London (was born and bred there) bad he had to leave because the area he lived in was mostly white people and was forced out in fear of his life because of rasist people who hated blacks.

Would you still be saying you were glad he moved eh? No, you would feel for him and slag off all the rasist white people who forced him out of his home.

My point is, people are just as rasist to white people as they are to black people nowadays. 50 years ago it was mostly blacks people were rasist against and i am not defending that because that was awful. I am saying in 2007, the word rasist doesn't always warrant black people, it warrants white people too.

Just to add wbut you clearly bought into his ridiculous Daily Mail 'We aren't safe in our own country!' bullshit.

That wasn't him reading out of the Daily Mail some bullshit story, that was him saying why he doesn't live in the part of London he once did. The fact you are defending the people who made him fear for his life because he had white skin makes you a discusting person and just as rasist as those blacks who forced him out because if it were the other way around and the man we bought the car off of was black you wouldn't be calling it a 'Daily Mail' bullshit story would you.

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:19

That post is to Love by the way!

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:19

No IcingOnTheCake, I don't think it's "okay", I think he was talking rubbish! I simply don't believe him!

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:21

Because he was a white man and no black person is ever rasist towards a white man

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:23

It is just not true that London is, per se, a dangerous place to live for a white man.

My friend who is black like me is married to a Belgian (white). A year ago they bought a house in Surrey but because she was away, he moved in first. The white neighbour welcomed him and told him that it was a very nice area but it was going down the pan because of the increasing numbers of immigrants. He said to my friend's husband that he was alright, it is the black ones that he objected to!

My friend's husband made his excuses and left. A few days later my friend turns up. Neighbour sees friend with husband and to this day, no words have been exchanged with said neighbour. He wants nothing to do with them because my friend is black!

When many of the indigenous population in this country spout on about immigration, they are talking about people of colour. If all the immigrants came from Western Europe or Australia or New Zealand or USA or Canada, immigration would not be the hot potato that it is now.

Unfortunately these same ignoramuses seem oblivious to the fact that their public services would collapse overnight without non-white immigrants!

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:32

I don't believe his story, not because he was white, but because it doesn't stack up, in my 21 years of personal experience of living in inner-city London.

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:34

speedymama, that is exactly the same sort of thing I've heard so many times - the "this was a lovely area before the coloureds (sic) moved in".

Like I say, I always challenge it, because if you don't you just encourage these people in their belief that all white people think the way they do.

speedymama · 11/09/2007 13:39

Icing, I can guarantee that that man has embellished his fairy tale to justify his xenophobia.

He probably chose to move to the Isle of White because in is pea-brain, he probably thinks that everybody is white..

What I find intriguing is why you are so ready to believe everything he told you, especially as you don't even know him? Personally, I think it speaks volumes about your own deep seated feelings/belief.

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:41

I don't condone people who are against blacks and i never have. I am defending white people who fall victim to rasism and it is happening more and more yet the victims are not believed! Blacks are just as rasist to whites nowadays but because of what happened 50 years ago the word rasist will always be associated with people against blacks not whites.

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:42

And you are basing this on...?

policywonk · 11/09/2007 13:43

Icing, do you think you could bring yourself to talk about 'black people', rather than just 'blacks'? The latter usage is strongly associated with racism.

speedymama · 11/09/2007 13:43

Dinosaur, a white woman at Sunday School told me that she now takes her son to another barber because her old one had employed an Eastern European and she did not like the way he handled her son's hair!. She obviously thinks that because my DH is white that I would share her prejudices. Doh!

I avoid this ignoramus now!

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:44

Personal experience and friends and familys personal experience. Do you really think there aren't blacks out there who are rasist towards white people?

SenoraPostrophe · 11/09/2007 13:44

to go back to the op for a minute...

Should even openly racist threads be deleted though? Because if we do that, then that allows the racists to complain that their veiws are censored, and can help them to persuade others. The BNP thrive on such censorship ( "listen to the truth they don't want you to hear" and that kind of crap).

but anyway. lol at the people who didn't realise mumsnet isn't all white. praps we should have special colour coded profiles?

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:45

Sorry, the word blacks was just shorthand.

law3 · 11/09/2007 13:45

I think the thread has created a great deal of interest with people wanting to debate.

Have to admit it has now turned into a thread where people are just swapping discrimination stories with isnt very productive.

If anyone actually wants an honest and open debate i have started another thread, other stuff, what causes racism and what could be done to ease it.

Ive started to doubt my views because of the other thread and am willing to learn.

speedymama · 11/09/2007 13:45

Icing,

Blacks

White people

Do you have trouble referring to blacks as people?

SenoraPostrophe · 11/09/2007 13:46

icing - of course some black people are racist. But someone being hounded out of his home for fear of his life? If he was threatened why didn't he go to the police? It's not like they're anti-white is it? I don't believe you either. Not sure why I'm replying tbh.

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:47

Oh pleeeaaase! Stop trying to twist things and make me out to be rasist.

speedymama · 11/09/2007 13:47

Icing

First of all the word is racist, not rasist.

Secondly, I have come across racist people of all colours and shades. I don't tolerate it from anybody.

IcingOnTheCake · 11/09/2007 13:48

What could the police do, put the whole estate in prison for being rasist against a white person
