Hmm? Well AM I?

If someone tells me not to click on the FUCKING thread in question, I think I will explode. Racism should have no place on Mumsnet.

Difers - I don't have a problem with people saying 'in our own country' except when it implies that other non-white Brits are not in their own country.

Being able to trace one's roots is not enough of an indication of one's country surely?

I mean I can also trace my family roots in the UK and Ireland back for several centuries... except for the last couple of generations which were born/raised in Australia. I will shortly be sitting my UK test to become British.

OTOH DH was born in Australia, but his parents are China born Chinese. DH himself does not speak Chinese and doesn't have a huge amount to do with culture (apart from a penchant for stir fries!). China would certainly never recognise him as a Chinese national.

Then we come to DS - he was born here and is British by birth. This is without a doubt 'his country' - despite his mixed race background.

So... its a complicated issue...

icing - everyone is entitled to an opinion, your not talking b**ks. Thats the whole point listening to other peoples points of views, helps to ease racial tension and is productive, you never know we all might learn something!!!!!!!!!

law3 · 12/09/2007 11:47

Difers - well said, everyone is entitled to have an opinion and some might be more articulate than others, the minute we start name calling and labelling, shooting them down in flames, it turns into an arguement, tit for tat etc.

I think people should start to practise what they preach tolerance and understanding, then we all might learn something and perhaps have a better understanding!!!!

You know I invented this thread title when I was corkingly mad and I wish I hadn't now. It seems strident and horrible. Would anyone mind if I asked Mumsnet to delete the thread?

That's what i didn't understand at the beginning. I know you were very angry but i could see that you starting this thread would mean that we didn't just have one racism thread but we ended up with two! I know you started this thread with best of intentions but i knew it would end up pretty much the same as the other thread- everyone debating over racism. These things always happen when threads with the same topic occurs!

law3 · 12/09/2007 12:03

potroo - i agree anyone born in this Country should be allowed to use the term 'my Country'.

Nothing at all racist, about being proud of your heritage.

I think we are creating a nation who are hyper sensitive, easy to offend, who nit pick and shout racist, rather than actually dealing with peoples concerns.

law3 · 12/09/2007 12:05

i also dont have a problem with anyone living in this country, who wasnt born here refering to this country as their country either

law3 · 12/09/2007 12:37

hurly - dont worry about it, come and have a chat on other stuff thread

MadamePlatypus · 12/09/2007 15:02

Having read the thread, I think the problem was the wording of the OP (which the OP apologised for) and the racist views of subsequent posters. There were some interesting posts (e.g. by chocolatedot) about trying to make friends with other mums who don't speak the same language/share same expectations of school gate culture.

I suppose you can complain about individual posts but its difficult to know the difference between an ignorant/unfortunate post by somebody willing to change their mind/express themselves differently (and I would put the OP in this category) and those people who are ignorant and proud of it.
