AIBU to ask fellow Mumsnetters your favourite conspiracy theories?

Where it be about lizard people, 911 or the Government man-making Coronvirus to kill off the vulnerable, what conspiracy theory sends a chill up your spine?

Sorry if a little dark but I have to admit I love a good conspiracy theory and figured I wouldn't be the only one! Plus I need some bedtime reading...

Here's one: the government itself 6 years ago proved that the UK's tough furniture flammability laws don't work. Which means that for over 30 years we've all been poisoned in our own homes by masses of flame retardant chemicals that are toxic and add nothing to fire safety. It gets worse: last year, the Environmental Select Committee recommended that the government change these laws and take children's mattresses, prams, etc out of scope immediately (because our kids are sleeping on flame retardants that were banned from sheep dip because they're so toxic). But the government has decided to maintain vast profits to industry over public health by saying that it is not going to change these regulations for at least another 9-12 years. Oh, wait a minute, this one just sounds like a conspiracy . . .

Flame evidence?

FlameIngSofa · 28/03/2020 14:28

There is loads but the EAC's final report is a good place to start:www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/environmental-audit-committee/inquiries/parliament-2017/toxic-chemicals-in-everyday-life-17-19/ This enquiry was set up around evidence given to the Chair by myself, a government whistle-blower. Check my website for further detail: www.toxicsofa.com.

FlameIngSofa · 28/03/2020 14:40

The evidence that these Regulations don't work is on the Department for Business's own website: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/416984/bis-15-150-technical-annex-systematic-rationale-for-modification-of-the-furniture-furnishings-fire-safety-regulations-in-relation-to-schedule-4-schedule-5.pdf
Apologies for you having to cut and paste the link. A quote from this report:

To quote from it:

"It is possible to demonstrate in full scale tests that the Regulations are ineffective. Consumers are, in many instances, being led to believe that the furniture they buy is match resistant when it is not so in its final form (because it has been sprayed by persistent and flammable materials or has covers which behave favourably in test but not in the finished item or has components near the surface which are flammable)."

Match resistance is the main ignition resistance for flame sources that are dropped on to sofas. The research showed that over 90% of sofas fail this test in practice. And if the ignition test fails then so does the fillings test, i.e. the vast majority of UK sofas are flammable when they aren't supposed to be. And they contain around 10-15 kgs of flame retardant chemicals that are not preventing ignition but wear off and get into our bloodstreams, e.g. UK mothers' breast milk contains the highest levels of flame retardants in the world.

These chemicals have been linked to thyroid disorders amongst many other things.

FlameIngSofa · 29/03/2020 14:12

Yes, that's one of the more established effects of flame retardants. An excellent and troubling book on this (and other effects) is "Toxic Cocktail" by Barbara Demeneix.

The latest London Real interview with David Icke has been banned by YouTube. So much for freedom of expression. For now, you can still see it here: londonreal.tv/the-coronavirus-conspiracy-how-covid-19-will-seize-your-rights-destroy-our-economy-david-icke/

Tdaadfb100 · 07/04/2020 16:47

This is interesting too. Worth a watch.. and not too long! (Not that you’ve got anything better to do and it will make a change from.. Escape to the Country, or whatever!

Youtube are a private company. If they want to take down videos from an anti-Semitic lunatic which spreads dangerous lies about the current health crisis and condoning attacks on communications masts, then that's their perogative.

FlameIngSofa · 08/04/2020 09:16

ocarian: Examples, please, of Icke's anti-Semitism. I've read quite a bit of his work and while he is critical of some aspects of Zionism and some of the actions of the State of Israel, I've never seen single sign that he is anti-Semetic. Quite the contrary: his take on the human race is that everyone is equal, just different aspects of the same spiritual core. Perhaps more to the point, where are the examples of him being anti-Semitic on YouTube?

Examples, please, of the "dangerous lies" he's spreading about the current health crisis.

By contrast, I can give you examples of outright lies told by our government which are putting the entire country's population at risk. Do you simply accept everything we're told about the virus is true because those in authority say it is?

ocarinan · 08/04/2020 19:55

His promotion of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion for one, and going on about how the zionist elite are lying sbout the holocaust. Point is, Youtube are under no obligation to give lizardman or anyone else a platform.

Very funny. And true.

Placemarking as I have to go and do something else now. Trig - you are on page 7.

ocarinan · 09/04/2020 11:58

The protocols of the elders if Zion isn't anti-Semitic? Are you fucking serious?

If you can show me actual evidence that Icke is agreeing with the anti-Semitism behind the Protocols of Zion, I will be happy to agree you're right and apologise for wasting your time.

WakeAndBake · 09/04/2020 14:59

@Flameingsofa

Great posts about the fire-retardant chemicals. Shocking stuff.

I also agree about Icke. Thanks for the link, I am watching it now. 5 million views but it is totally hidden if you search for it. I could only find it through your link!

FlameIngSofa · 09/04/2020 15:20

@WakeAndBake

It is shocking, perhaps too much so. I had a long chat today with someone at FIDRA (Scottish environmental lobby group). She worked closely with Mark Ruffalo and Rob Bilott when they brought "Dark Waters" over here recently. As a result, she's been advising lots of people on the problems with PFAS. However, like me she believes that flame retardants are probably an even bigger problem. She's been working to raise awareness, for example, of the terrible affect FRs have on marine life. We all know about plastic but as she says chemicals are a bigger issue.

But you can't really expect the public to want to learn that staying indoors more is probably doing more damage to their health than the virus - because their beds, sofas, carpets, curtains, bedding, kids' play mats, etc, are stuffed full of toxic flame retardants that are easily absorbed through the skin!
